Teenage Castle Donnington quartet Late Of The Pier want to be the most exciting band on the planet, and when trawling through all of the printed bumpf that surrounds them it soon becomes apparent that they very well might be. One day.
However, today isn't the day in question. 'Space And The Woods', for all its Numan-esque bravado ("Suicide's in my blood...") and index finger-pointing towards The Faint (or, at worst, The Bravery) in terms of overwrought synths, doesn't quite hit the bull’s-eye.
While the tune itself isn't half bad, there's this little niggling thought that can't get the words ‘Late For The 2003 Scene’ out of my mind. Maybe that's a little harsh, though, as this can't fail to sound good while the listener’s half-mashed at 3am on a Sunday morning.
Flipside 'Heartbeat, Flicker, Line', whilst still possessing a borderline pass in eighties nostalgia opportunism, could be a future direction the band may wish to pursue post-adolescence, as the Godfather Eno and Three Kings Emerson Lake And Palmer look on vivaciously. Promising.
Good, fair review
A bright lot for the future, the live show is mightily impressive as well. Come on leaps and bounds in the last year.
