TV On The Radio: Wolf Like Me

When you consider how narrow in scope and imagination most pop songs are, then the music of TV On The Radio is like staring at the entire world through a wide-angle lens. The fact that most of the tracks off Return To Cookie Mountain mix static, soul, art-rock, new-wave, a-cappella clap-alongs and mind-warping sampling into a cohesive whole is breath-taking enough on its own, but the fact that all of it passes the whistle test with ease is something only just short of miraculous. This is music that gives me goosebumps.

Really, the Brooklyn-based band could've picked anything as a lead-off single, but 'Wolf Like Me' sounds like a dance-floor favourite already. This is a rare beast indeed - it isn't soul train, but it sounds like a non-metaphorical equivalent. Tinkly, rattling effects lead into a chugging drumbeat, building up a head of steam; then, the harsh, echoing synth-lines descend. In the middle of this maelstrom, Tunde Adebimpe's beautiful, gospel-tinged voice sails out, and by then you're hooked. If you have hips, you're moving them if you have any taste at all. Strike that - you're moving if you have any soul...

yes

i love this song..probably my favourite from the album, if its possible to have a favourite.

Yes yes yes!

Amazing song, amazing band, makes me wanna dance, makes me wanna fuck, makes me wanna fall in love!!!

i don't like it.

instantly forgettable and can't imagine how i'd dance to it.

5/10.

I'm sorry

you feel that way.

But but but...

... it has the biggest beats this side of the golden gate bridge falling over at aarmageddon. how can you not work out how to dance to it!? i have seen it danced to. it is quite possible.

fair enough

it just doesnt do it for me. i wish it did. it just leaves me distinctly underwhelmed, which seems to be the opposite of most people's response.

for me, the off kilter beats do not match the slow and unmelodic singing. where is the tune?

Huh?

You know, I remember reading some of the themes that the songs on the new album were going to cover, and I don't see how any of these songs could leave any person in the state of euphoria you seem to be describing.

To clarify

I am referencing Ian J's comment...

That's the beauty of music isn't it?

It's all so subjective that there can be no rational argument about it.

There is no point in me trying to explain why I love this band so much, and it would be an impossible task.

So, you and I just have to accept that we are poles apart on this one and I am the lucky one who takes something positive from it.

I didn't finish off my 2nd paragraph

I should have continued with "it would be an impossible task to convince you to like this song or for you to experience the emotions I do when I listen to it - it's either there or it's not"

but if you describe what you see in the song

itd make it easier for other people to see it too. like if youre looking at clouds, and see a dog shaped one, others might not see it, but if you point to the parts and explain how they look like dogs, others can experience it.

otherwise what is the point of music writing?

can't stand

this song....the vocals make we want to scream. I can see how people like it but not for me i'm afraid...

...

Automatic 10/10
Dead 60's 10/10

Opinion - Invalid

awesome song

only just got return to cookie mountain and this is the stand out- although it reminds me of banquet by bloc party and I'm not sure why

hahaha

pwned.

hey....

...it's not my fault i've rated bands whilst drunk, if there was an no "edit ratings" option i'd use it promptly.

how about trying

a rational debate instead of pointing and shouting 'omgzzz you like the automatic'?

(who are in fact shite, but that's not the point)

This song truly is...

incredible. Though i have not previously thought about it, i do now see the dance-ability of this song; such ideas shall be trialled and tested at Reading.

its dancable

Province>>>>>>this track though
