Supergrass: St. Petersburg

When a child grows from the ages of 10 to 11, the first signs of maturity start to show - the same, it seems, goes for Supergrass. A year on from their 'Supergrass Is 10' compilation, the eternally-youthful trio return with the first single to be taken from their forthcoming fifth effort 'Road To Rouen', 'St. Petersburg'. is The track fades in gently, riding on a lush piano groove and Danny Goffey’s most sedate drumbeat to date, while Gaz Coombes’s voice, softened almost to a croon, recollects a romantic travelogue. The whole affair sounds not unlike a lost Elliott Smith demo, a sparklingly melodic slice of melancholy, and the sound of Supergrass growing old gracefully.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

I think this single truly marks the spot where Supergrass officially lost the plot.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

..and hurrah to them for that. Don't really want to be doing 'Cuaght by the Fuzz' over a decade later. I'm wondering if this is an odd single choice, the sort of track that works better as an album track.

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

ah but you've not heard the rest of the album. this is definitely the most commercial thing on there. "Road TO Rouen" is still a corker though...

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

We'll agree to disagree on that last point Wizzy.

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Fair enough. I stand by this song thoughthence...er...the review...

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

ARGH! Typos. That should have said:

"Fair enough. I stand by this song though, hence...er...the review..."

*grumble*

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Tis a good review too, even if I can't stand the song! Or the album.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

only 5 albums? shiiit.
i seems hideously like there's been more.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

I love Supergrass. I'd say something more constructive but I haven't heard the new material yet. Album's on order.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

I think this album is a little more like they're self titled one - takes a few listens to get used to. I've gone through it once or twice...it's alright.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Spot on, i love supergrass but they have never managed to sound quite so ...er... lovely before.

Am i the only person who thought the s/t album was any good?

>Am i the only person who thought the s/t album was any good?

It's my least favourite but still great. I prefer my Supergrass uptempo. Which is why I'm not sure what to expect from this one...

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

At the time, I remember the s/t album being easily my favourite album of that year (and I'm not even that much of a Supergrass fan!)

I've not listened to it for quite a while tho' obviously I remember the singles being great and I've got a feeling there was a great song called Faraway.

Must dig it out and give it a listen...

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

i like this.

kthxbye.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

I really like this song!
I really like supergrass!

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Nobody wants to grow old, Supergrass know this, they are still cool to this day. In it For The Money is my favourite album with the fantastic track YOU CAN SEE ME yet a little known track, don't suppose they sing it anymore in their live shows.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

faraway is supergreass' best ever song

THE lost single of the last decade. Coulda been number one.

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Yeah but maaaan!!! It's no waaay better than Symposium's finest hour "Impossible" which was not released as a single either. Travesty!!!!! Anyone else do better? I dare ya.

(This is Tom, I am not Adie hurrah!!!!)

Re: Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Tom, we have been thru this. One last time: Symposium were terrible. Better than Thee Unstrung tho. I am not sure bands come much worse than that tho.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

This album's a grower. Think White album rather than argent peppers.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

I reckon it sounds like 'Harvest' era Neil Young. Good tune with longevity - a rare thing these days!

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

Agree that Faraway is Supergrass' best song. Amazing track.

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

I like it, but when I first heard it on the radio I thought it was going to be deus 'little arithmetics', and so was a tiny bit disappointed for a few minutes

Supergrass - St. Petersburg

i saw supergrass last month. and to me they are still top of the bill.

and i do like the new stuff. but maby because the first time i heard it, it was live. things always sound better live.

yay to the faraway lovers. its great
