Worrying fact: find this on HMV’s website and they’ll recommend that you also purchase the latest single from Dogs. Makes you wonder if the commercial powers that be have ever heard Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies for themselves, or if they’ve simply picked up the vibes coming their way from the more turned on and tuned in corners of the press (hello, us. Yes, we do blow our own once in a while) and decided they’re hip ‘n’ young enough to slot in alongside whatever’s hot in the you-know-what this week. Yeah, makes me wonder alright, ‘cause YMSS sound like absolutely bugger-all else out there.

‘Ores’ is the fantastic proof: a mind-blowing concoction of rampant riffs, sombre breakdowns, happy-hardcore handclaps and throbbing Moog. It’s four songs in four minutes and more wildly creative than anything any the aforementioned ‘recommended’ outfit could produce given ten years solitude and a budget bigger than Microsoft’s post-tax yearly profits. It’s full of as much joy and playfulness as it is sorrow and weariness. As lead vocalist Andrew Mears sighs something about firing upon enemy ships, leaving flotsam burning in a beauteous sea, one can’t help but be sucked into the graphic imagery only to be spat out once those pulsating keys come punching in. Then there’s the a cappella break in proceedings, and those handclaps… insanely brilliant and utterly addictive. 'Ores' has everything.

Dogs? Forget about it. No band in the world comes close to matching YMSS’s thirst for the deranged; nobody can hold a torch to their genre-splicing glory. Prefixes come and go in YMSS’s world – post, prog, whatever – but none stick. Only one, simple word can successfully clamp itself to this eight-legged beast of a band as it sprints into previously unexplored musical territories: brilliant.

Single of the year, no contest.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

So, so good. That is all.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Yes I agree it is fantastic, but I'm not sure if I would rate it as single of the year, speak to me again in December. It may just be that I'm saying this because in my eyes, Ores doesn't match up to some of the previous songs this band have done.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

arent hmv recommendations based on what people purchase at same time?
n i agree with smallpox, this song jus seems like a calling card or something, showing everything the band can do within four minutes, while not being a true representation of the band. still, at least you cant see it goes on a bit t0o much :)

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

what a lovely song it is.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Does anyone think Mike is in love in with one of the band?
It could be the indie-boy love affair of the decade.
Picture the STOPS AND STARTS, STOPS AND STARTS, hands clapping, splashing together, erupting puddles of lube from their palms...

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Sweet fucking Jesus Adams, you're sicker than an under-10s Gary Glitter impersonation competition, multiple pornographic images an' all.

Hee hee.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

I recorded the handclaps for my message tone on my phone. Yes, I suck.

I honestly think it could be the single of the year.

Well said Muff Diver.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

It's likely. I mean...I'd take any offers from Al any day of the week.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

hmm, i actually think this and retreat!retreat! are equal fer single of year. or 'neighbourhood 2(laika)'

but i think lyca sleeps 'closer in' will change my mind, even tho i havent heard the song. the b-side is amazing so im guessin its better

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Did not retreat! retreat! come out last year?

All the stores I've been to haven't had Ores in stock...damn them!

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Try selectadisc on Berwick Street (just off Oxford Street). That's where I got it yesterday!

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

I was quite surprised HMV had it in stock...the one opposite Bond St. station! The bloke at the till had even heard of YMSS, bonus.

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

buy it from HMV Oxford and you can get served by a member of the band!

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

actually i do think retreat! retreat! came out in 2004, my mistake.
and i guess it would be fun to buy the single from one of the guys, but say its fer yr lass/lad and you think they are shit personally.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Never heard this until I just watched the vid on t'internet.

Those handclaps deserve a single of their own.

NICE.

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

I bought this on your recommendation Mr Diver. It better be good! Oh. It is. Very. Well done. Carry one!

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

it's only four minutes long?!
i've seen that video at least five times and i could've sworn it was longer.
the unexpected disco freakout in the middle scared the shit out of me the first time.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

saw this band last night at atp - i must have been living under a rock,
these guys totally blew me away! a must live and i'm defiently will be seeking out their recordings. just checked their website - playing london town may 19th... ltown folks take note!

Re: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Hurrah!
'Tho they're also playing Hitchin this Friday.
Hitchin-ers, take note.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

Heh, I gave this a five too.

Floppy disks are impractical.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

I actually love this. Been a bit behind on the YMSS news recently so didn't realise this was out.

Handclaps. Yes. YES!

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

disappointed that we only get live versions for b-sides, and not only live versions, but live versions that are exactly the same as the recorded versions.

Oh well, Ores is good enough on its own.

Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies - Ores

This is such an amazing song that you get to the end of listening to it and can't remember exactly what you've heard, because it's all gone by so quickly. But you can't hide from the fact that you've heard something damn interesting.
