The Mars Volta: The Widow

When it comes to being unpredictable, you needn’t look any further then the unique frazzle-haired genius of The Mars Volta. From prog-rock escapades to electrifying samba rock to space-age abstract adventures – as their name suggests, it’s clear they’re not of this world.

But just when you thought you had them figured out, they confuse matters even more with 'The Widow'. With its strong commercial sound, they break the convention of being unconventional with a ballad held together with a powerful melody and solid structure.

And while there is very little evidence of the random language written in the heart of what we are used to from Omar and Cedric, it remains an emotionally challenging masterpiece that jolts a prickling sensation all over the minute your ears tune in. Much of this is owed to Cedric crooning with youthful vigour in a bluesy tone, resonating every note like fragments of shattered sparkling glass. Complimenting this are the melancholic horns decorated with jagged guitar trills giving it a sassy edge, which eloquently shows off their Latin American roots.

Overall, a truly sublime trinket that successfully propels them into a diverse class of their own.

I don't actually mind this, but much of the rest of the album makes me feel ill.

      I like pop. Sue me.

        wrong title? where?
      • Re: The Mars Volta - The Widow

Personally, The Widow is my second least favourite part of Frances The Mute, with my least favourite being the non-song / white noise (as good as) parts.

There's 4 quality songs buried in there though!

Couldn't disagree more with the review. I don't like much of Frances the Mute, but at least they tried with most of it. Its like they didn't even bother with this song. It seems like they had to put it there to satisfy the record company's desire for a palatable single.

Sounds like Televators 2... I think it fits in quite nicely on the album, but as a single it's.. meh. And i'm sure there's more singles in the album, pour another icepick or a shortened vismund cygnus maybe?

          Awful video

part of why we like mars volta so much is for their unpredictibleness.
i have not heard the album yet, but the widow did leave a nice impression onn me. im looking forward to getting my hands on the album if its so true the widow is one of the lesser songs of the album

iv only heard this song from the album and its not as good as the first album
    • The Mars Volta - The Widow

Why will they play this live, when they don't play Inertiatic ESP because it was released as a single?

Inertiatic is far better, and the Widow really feels like it was written as a single rather than part of "Frances"
