Cockney/Brum geezer Mike Skinner aka The Streets is, depending on which lifestyle bible one subscribes to, either the 21st century poet laureate or a gibbering fool.

New single ‘Fit... But You Know It’ will only continue the debate. It’s essentially the tale of a lad’s holiday in Tenerife featuring the prerequisite birds, booze and kebabs, and raises more questions than answers. Is this the world’s first pub rock/hip hop crossover? Is this ’clever clever’ or dumbing down? Is Skinner taking the piss (again)?

Whatever, ‘Fit...’ is already all over the airwaves like a dose of an especially nasty sexually transmitted disease, and is just as irritating. Why so? Well, maybe it's the repetitive, nagging guitar friff, the sing-song style vocals or the banal lyrics, especially in the chorus: "I’m not trying to pull you/ even though I would like to/ I think you are really fit/ You’re fit but my gosh don’t you know it". Fuck knows. It's probably all these things, topped-off with the overwhelming 'so bad, it's good' vibe that Skinner's made a career of.

One things for sure though, that in bars and clubs from Falaraki to Northampton, pissed up Brits will be glassing each other to this all summer long. A smash hit for sure. A hit... but you know it, if you will.

The Streets new album 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' is due for release on May 10th. Get the tracklisting and tour dates HERE

This song grates...It makes my fuckiing teeth itch its so bad.

I loved OPM, but this does not bode well for the new album. I thought OPM was the musical equivalent to Human Traffic and I loved it....but I would not have appreciated a Human Traffic 2 and I don't think I'm gonna appreciate Skinners' follow up. Hope I'm wrong though.

    • Re: The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

OPM was so great it will be very difficult for skinner to make another one as great as it was, every song on OPM was amazing, ecspecially Stay posotive, if i was a sissy i would have cried at the end of that song, But then again he is a genius and maybe he will pull out something even more amazing

      Fantastic! I like.

The record makes me laugh though, but you're right in that if the whole record is like that, it'll be a joke too far. Doubt it will be though.

      And the Futureheads remix rocks.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

No, this is fucking brilliant, this song. I love it. It's great. It deserves more than 3/5.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

Nah nah nah nah nah seriously Mick you fucker. Honestly though, Park Life meets No One Knows. Choon Choon Choon.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

I hated the Streets at the start and this record does nothing to change that. The South Park movie soundtrack is funnier and more creative.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

I think this is Mike Skinner trying to make a pop(ulist) record. It's kind of the Streets treading water. I'll probably get the second album, but I'm not sure it will ever match the epoch-making OPM.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

hes taken his ultra slack flow and irregular rhyme patterns way too far. i quite like the riff, but the vocals are fucking unredeemable. no attempt at the poetry of "has it come to this" and no where fucking near the humour of "the irony of it all".
its just such a gratingly effort-free (sometimes a compliment, but not here) hook.
      eurgh
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

it's Chas n Dave for the 21st century...
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

anyone heard The Futureheads' remix? if you go to the official Streets website there's a cassete you can listen to, it's track 3. it's bonkers
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

I guess he just gave us his best during OPM and has ran out of juice, but who know maybe he will blow us away, i hope so
    • Re: The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

i agree - this track is not dry at all - its utter shite - opm was clever and beautiful and this is turd.

plus the streets suck live - all bass and loads of nonsense.

      nonsensical motherf**kers
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

Although it's hard to deny the naffness of his rhymes on the verse - which frankly don't go anywhere and aren't really that funny - it's still a great pseudo-novelty pop tune and I'm just about going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Must say I quite enjoyed "OPM" as well - not as much as a lot of other people seemed to, but something about it just managed to click...

The Streets: They're Shit But They Dont Seem To Know It
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

It is worth buying for the Futurheads mix - bonkers.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

The Streets, mmm I do like them but i'm not sure why, Original Pirate Material is stunning, for varied reasons but it's very obvious why his 'style' (or whatever) can be annoyin.

Fit... is starting to get on my tits, mainly because of the fact that in no less than 12 hours i saw two tv performances of it. I would love it if i'm pissed out with my mates, sober on the other hand it can be a bit annoyin... i really don't know yet. this is a confusing post.

I'm definitely looking forward to the album tho. I wanna make my judgement of Chav Skinner then.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

well im currently listening to the new album, and its completly different from OPM. the production is better, but i dont think that is a good thing, there was an authenticity about the bedroom production of OPM, that this album lacks, but i still reckon its pretty damn awsome
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

OPM was fucking amazing, when you set the bar that high its almost impossible to imagine someone reaching that again, Iv only heard a few of the songs on the record so I hope I will be pleasently surprised
      • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

Well clearly it's shit, he was always shit, and anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot with cloth ears.

HELLO - status quo want their riff back!
      • Re: The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

It took me a while to get into this, but I think Original Pirate Material did too.

This definetly grows on you, although I do cringe slightly at "Yes Yes Oh Yay"
        • Re: The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

I was able to get rigt into OPM, I borowed the CD from my freind and was going to go right to Push things forward but after hearing the first part of the first song I had to listin more and the next thing I know I had lisended to the hole CD
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

New album is slow and boring. Fit but.... is the best track! Very average I tell thee.

And I was a huge fan of OPM.

Very disapointing. In my opinion, like.
    • The Streets - Fit...But You Know It

'a grand..' is good.not great but good. ther was no way mike would beat 'original...' so no dissapointment there. im actualy really gettin into it now. reminds me of listening to story tapes...well,it is realy.
'wouldnt have it any other way's pretty fuckin beautiful...hmm whos the dude on the end tho, that bits a bit pissy
