Any band who thinks it’s a good idea to sound like the Happy Mondays should be immediately killed, chopped into small pieces and sprinkled liberally into the nearest shark-infested waters. ‘Baggy’ does not need reviving, it was fucking shit the first time round.

It’s certainly the case that Kasabian really can talk the talk. They’ve already slagged all the easy targets in the NME, proclaimed that rock’n’roll runs in their veins and made allegiances with the right people. They clearly yearn for the bad boy status afforded to Oasis a decade ago, but their debut album hardly has the songs to elevate them to such levels of stardom.

While there is something seethingly primal about opener ‘Club Foot’ and parts of ‘Kasabian’ do effectively mimic the electroid-rock shapes of the ’Scream, it’s hardly rocket science these days and, frankly, The Cooper Temple Clause do it a whole lot better. ‘LSF’ and ‘Reason Is Treason’ see the band puff out their pigeon-chests, but for all their bravado the hooks and nuances are few and far between. By the dreary closer ‘U Boat’ you even start wondering if fellow revivalists The Music were actually that bad (they were).

Sure this album may well sound awesome if you’ve just snorted a metre of charlie or recently breakfasted from a menu of ‘shrooms and LSD, but for sober ears it’s enough to drive anyone to drugs.

Kasabian - Kasabian

oh smeg off. just cos theyre a bunch of assholes (which, yeah, they are) doesnt hold anything over the quality of the album. there are some blinding songs on here.

Kasabian - Kasabian

I actually quite like a lot of their music and will probably buy the album, but I agree with Tom about their interviews. They've joined the Mani school of gobbery where they feel the need to constantly spout about their authenticity, and imply their moral superiority to everyone else. Boring. They'll get backed into a corner mind - at some point this means they'll have to start telling you how exciting Weller's music still is.

Kasabian - Kasabian

That review is spot on. I can't believe people are still buying into this type of band who think that they are the coolest motherfuckers around because they snort coke and "bleed rock 'n' roll". Kasabian are just basically twats, twats who don't even make good music.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Quote from Rocky Raccoon..
"I can't believe people are still buying into this type of band because they snort coke and "bleed rock 'n' roll".

Are you sure you aren't talking about some garage punk fucktards or someone like the Libertines...?

Oh, fuck off n die! baggy was amazing and still is you cunts, I'd sooner listen to the Mondays and Roses than fuckin Razorlight!

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Actually Pablo, the "'bleed rock 'n' roll" quote is from Kasabian themselves...

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

You're all just jealous, i've just heard *Cutt Off* and it's the sexiest, mother-f*cking tune in a long time!

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

You're all just jealous, i've just heard *Cutt Off* and it's the sexiest, mother-f*cking tune in a long time!

Kasabian - Kasabian

Well i thought the album was alright. Debating wether or not to go and watch them play tonight. They do appear to be a bunch of cunts.
They say they want an album as big and important as Definatly Maybe, but the difference is that Oasis were actually saying something with their music, Kasabian have nice tunes but say fuck all.
p.s. i like the The Music.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Best first paragraph ever! The Happy Mondays were fucking atrocious and that kind of wank needs reviving like I need water in my lungs.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

The Happy Mondays were (and still are) one of the most inventive, original and downright brilliant bands that ever happen to pick up instruments...
OceanStorm, you were 6 when I saw the Mondays at Eland road, they blew my mind and continue to excite now, have you ever even heard Bummed?

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Pick up instruments? They had a dancer for fuck's sake! :p

Even if I was a foetus when you saw them, I'd still think they were shit. But you seem to have enjoyed their music, so evidently they did serve some sort of purpose :)

Kasabian - Kasabian

bullshit, bring it on............

Kasabian - Kasabian

They want gassing if only for their babbling in the NME about being from the north. Five words: You're. From. Leicester. You. Cunts.

Kasabian - Kasabian

The Music are one of the best british live bands out there.

Kasabian are ok, but will soon get on my nerves - I can feel it in my bones.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

"The Music are one of the best british live bands out there."

But utter wank on 'record'.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Heh - the modern day Reef!

Kasabian - Kasabian

I'm sorry, but that is possibly the worst piece of critical writing I have ever read. The first and last paragraphs beggar belief. "Er... i think the Happy Mondays are shit" is your critique of the whole baggy era? This is the kind of crap that gives DiS a bad name, dragging the minority of good writers down with it.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Crap review, yes I agree. Even though they are dross.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Although the review was beautifully biased, I do wholeheartedly agree.

Telling everyone how great you are does NOT make it so. Boo, get off the stage.

Kasabian - Kasabian

I think that's a fair review. These guys are fucking posers.

Kasabian - Kasabian

i thin, being completely serious here, that we need more completely biased reviewers and reviwees. i don't want to sum up the good points or the bad points of a record - i want to know if it's more useful to light a fire or set a festival on fire. i'm going to chuck a sucker punch into the fray and say most people read more than one review of a cd before they buy it, and, as if probably the case with this review, will read it with no intention of buying said record, merely for the illicit subject matter of music. when i read a review of a cd i have no intention of buying, i don't want it to ponce around, i want it to entertain me. as all reviews should - and it just s happens that some of the best writing is completely biased one way or the other. minor 'goods' or 'bads' are cpmpletely irrelevant - you're not going to change your mind about buying a cd because one person, or even two of three people, say one of the songs out of 12 wasn't up to scratch.

rock on, emotional, biased, snobbish reviewers.

ahem.

Kasabian - Kasabian

So baggy was shit the 'first time' round was it?

Tell that to all of those people who constantly vote The Stone Roses as the best debut LP of all time.

In truth, Kasabian are one of the most vital new bands to have appeared and this LP, if listened to with un-sneering ears, would pick up on the countless number of proper tunes it contains.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Not sure future, it sounds a bit cheap to me. Baggy was baggy but this is a bit floppy.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

music for people who think the mercury music prize is 'cutting edge'. 'nuff said really.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Quite frankly, best debut LP of all time lists are consistently bullshit. That's almost as stupid as the "It did well in the charts, so it must be good" argument, and equally inconsistently applied.

The Stone Roses' album is held in high regard because of its context - it's not a timeless record that generations will come back to - merely a fairly good one.

Kasabian are OK, but to me they're just Xtrmntr-era Primal Scream. Xtrmntr is a fucking great album, but you can't base a career on it...

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Eh?

Something that 'does well in the charts' is not the same as something regarded highly by everyone. Ask any band how highly they rate the Stone Roses.

Regardless of whether Kasabian are good or not, the fact is that the baggy era of the Roses and Mondays has had a timeless effect on British rock.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

.............and said "timeless effect" now leaves us with the plodding misery of the new Ian "wow Noel Gallagher's on it!!!" Brown LP, Dermo from Northside's new band, and The Cunting Music.......
(and that's before we even get onto Kasabian)

That's not to say *everything* of that era was/is despisable......but........oh fuck this, just go here and read this instead.
http://www.mr-agreeable.net/stubbs/default.asp?nc=4314&id=78
So. Much. Fucking. Sense.

And yes I did like some of the Roses' music. Hell I LOVED the Mondays and bought the Flowered Up album. Irrespective of being 8/9/10 at the time etc etc. But most of what Stubbs writes is near-irrefutable...

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

That link is crap, Stubbs is a miserable cunt and... well just plain wrong! The facts speak for themselves, the Roses were/are very popular and so are Kasabian... now you can't argue with that! can you?

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Yes!

Plenty of bands are popular. It doesn't make them good.

Kasabian - Kasabian

"Come on it, get on it
I'm carving thru a letterbomb
I need it, like potions
These drugs are just an hour away
Come on it, electronic
A polyphonic prostitute, the motor's on fire
Messiah for the animals"

Lyrics like this are indicative of a 'vital new band'? Goodness me, I hope not. The fact that I'm not adverse to The Stone Roses just makes Kasabian seem even worse to me.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

I've just bought the album and it bears out what I said above - great tunes, up-their-arse people. I say this because I got the DVD edition - in which they admit that the above lyrics are just made up nonsense... and then there's the whole business of casting themselves as revolutionaries in the Club Foot video which made me piss myself laughing.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

that video is classic! i did meet the lead singer once, and he seems like a very nice fellow, but i think he must have a chronic coke habit.

ooh, id have slapped him if he tried to tell me leicester was northern though. whats wrong with being a midlander anyway?

Kasabian - Kasabian

"They want gassing if only for their babbling in the NME about being from the north. Five words: You're. From. Leicester. You. Cunts."

Too true. They just think they're good from the north (i wont give it the importance of a capital letter) and because they like The Stone Roses. I like The Stone Roses because they were a genuinely good band and made some great pop songs (Waterfall, She Bangs...) Kasabian are just another load of revivalists devaluing the originals.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Great Review.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Fantastic review, and on the mark. Kasabian are so...pisspoor.

Kasabian - Kasabian

My name is Tom Edwards and i write pithy, scathing reviews. Look how IMPORTANT i am.

Don't talk about the happy mondays, you waste of bandwidth.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

How can you like Sonic Youth AND The Happy Mondays? How?

Kasabian - Kasabian

I think that whenever anyone sees the word "review", they should switch it in their head for the word "opinion".

I like Kasabian's logo.

Kasabian - Kasabian

The way I see it is that if a band has to point out how in-bred they are to rock 'n' roll then it's pretty obvious that they are not. They shouldn't really need to point it out to anyone, Kasabian are worse than 50 Cent in terms of "keeping it real".

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

i met kasabian and they were hell nice to me being pretencious is a good thing cause if your cool then pretentious people still talk to you anyway and kasabina are obv. more important than bands like razorlight and the killers at least there an incy bit innovative.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

They're not innovative, jesus, they're derivative shite, like most music that your kind listen to.

Kasabian - Kasabian

but they're really not are they?

and the killers are fun eh?

Kasabian - Kasabian

they have the most boring songs i have ever heard, dull and shit.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Funny how Kasabian go on about anarchy and revolution and the breakdown of the establishment. Funny because they're signed to BMG, one of the major record labels and a shining example of the possible evils of capitalism (Don't mention being formed on Nazi gold capital anybody).

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

The best way to revolt is from within.

Razorlight are signed to Mercury - how do you think they've had hits?

And all the other bands supposedly on 'independent labels', you reckon they're not backed by major label balls?

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

i couldnt give a fuck if a band are on a major. its like a i cudnt give a fuck if a band were working class or not.

if they have the tunes then what does it matter?

Kasabian - Kasabian

Blah blah capitalist pig dogs BMG let me post this online using my PC based on Intel, Microsoft and all the other indie computer manufacturers blah fucking blah.. Kasabian are shit. You don't have to bring politics, baggy, capitalism and bleeding rock n' roll platelets into any argument as to why they are shit. You simply slap on the album and your argument is made for you. Fucking atrocious in every single way. This year's Kula Shaker.

Kasabian - Kasabian

i kind of like Kula Shaker.......*cough*

Kasabian - Kasabian

Yay, more slaggings please! Nothing more fun than reading the indignant responses of faithful followers of some turgid rock band
</attention deficit>

Kasabian - Kasabian

Ah no I wasn't defending Kasabian! I was criticising them! I was saying how they're completely hypocritical about their supposed northern working-classness and their keeping it real attitude! I hate Kasabian!

Kasabian - Kasabian

the most unfair review ive read on here.... they arent my cuppa, but are ok, not that bad anyway.
u know theyre cunts from their interviews? whatever.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

i still remember a couple of months ago before kasabian had got all this attention i think there was actually a post saying how much people were looking forward to there album, maybe not a post but people were definately excited about it, work it out. p.s. i dont like them it just annoys me.

Kasabian - Kasabian

He'll bleed rock & roll when someone rapes him up the arse.

Kasabian - Kasabian

I tend to prefer descriptive, objective reviews, but fookin 'ell, this needed saying! This band are DUMP.

Kasabian - Kasabian

the recent single is pretty poor but i enjoyed club foot. won't buy the album, not really interested and they sound like idiots.

but really, does whatever you think of the quality of the album warrant such a harsh comment as that just above from themurdermystery?

never. end of.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

That comment has got nothing to do with the quality of the album. It's about the attitude that they promote in their interviews. I mean, surely they can't be misquoted so many times.

I mean, I could have said he bleeds rock & roll once a month.

Kasabian - Kasabian

i rate happy mondays better than stone roses, although both artists have a couple of good tracks and some boring/repetetive songs.
kasabian do bore me alot, from what ive heard. but i can see why people might like them.
personally i dont think stone roses is the best debut ever.
some of these posts are just harsh, people shouldnt have such intense hatred for any band.

Kasabian - Kasabian

I tell you what though, you can slag off the review all you want (and I'd love to, but...) but it's got an absolutely massive response here! The album, I reckon, is magnificent. It's anthemic, uplifting and chock full of moments where I find myself playing out-of-tune air guitar and making 'ooh' noises really loudly. Sod their attitudes, I really don't give a shit if they're likable human beings or not. All I want from a rock 'n' roll band are the tunes, and this album supplies them. Big style.

Kasabian - Kasabian

WELL WELL I THINK WHAT THE FUCK, WHO CARES WHAT TOM 'WHATS HIS FUCKING FACE?' RECKONS. !!! WE'VE ALL GOT OUR OWN EARS AND EYES SO WE CAN DECIDE FOR OURSELVES. INNIT? AS FOR ME, KASABIAN ARE OK, AS FOR BEING BAD BOYS, THEN I'VE GOTTA LAUGH, THEY WOULDN'T LAST TEN SECONDS ON TOUR WITH US!! THEY'RE GOOD SONGS ARE GOOD AND THEIR BAD SONGS ARE BAD!!! I DONT GET THIS BIASED POINT OF VIEW WHERE PEOPLE LIKE TOM SEE A CHANCE TO SLAG OFF EVERYTHING THEY'VE EVER HATED AND TAKE IT (JUST COZ THEY WERE BULLIED AT SCHOOL BY PEOPLE THAT KASABIAN REMIND HIM OF) , NO MATTER WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES. IT'S JUST MAKING DROWNED IN SOUND LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF TWATS IF YOU ASK ME. NOT THAT YOU WERE!!

JON - SOMETHING PERSONAL

Kasabian - Kasabian

Being a scouser, it is my job to hate all things Manc, Happy Mondays and Tony Wilson included but not Roses and Oasis. Kasabian had 2 good singles being Club Foot and LSF which made me buy the album but personally I was dissappointed when I put my CD on and found it was a Happy Mondays tribute.

Kasabian - Kasabian

I know all of Kasabian personally im not friends with them now but I was for about 3 years.

I will give you an honest assessment.

Tom is a really nice sound bloke. he comes out with the funniest quotes in everyday life - he is not an arsehole at all - he is a genuinely funny (if slightly simple) man. Even though i am not friends with him now I have not got a bad word to say about him and he is a brilliant soulfull singer.

Serge - ok, good looking but up his own arse, very talented though - from when I knew them they have hundreds of songs that sound very different to what they have brought out and those songs were very good. They have just chose to go in this direction at the moment.

They will be around for ages becase Serge and Chris are very talented songwriters.

Chris Karloff is the biggest wanker I know - he does need bum raping.

The bass player - always very quiet but seemed nice.

You will not get a more fairer review than that.

Kasabian - Kasabian

They were shit when they were Saracuse, they still are. Oh, you should know that.

Kasabian - Kasabian

My view is the music isn't too bad, they're riding the Oasis wave nicely. Basically they're pretty average.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Its Oasis meets new wave meets the political angryness of rage against the machine and fucks it up entirely. They'd probably make better builders than musicians.

Kasabian - Kasabian

talented song writers?!!!!? the scream were a bunch of hacienda wannabes trying to tart it up as indie exactly like kasabian. the manchester scene finished when curtis killed himself and the smiths split, bands like this and oasis should stop bringing it back and let it R.I.P

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

i think most are u are quite sad taking this much effort to slag off a band u dont like, obviously they have touched a nerve. maybe ur scared that the band u arse lick are fucked now the real boys are here.

Kasabian - Kasabian

Sept 2006 - Kasabi-who???

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

Oct 2004 - Kasabi-who???

Kasabian - Kasabian

Kasabishite

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

It really astounds me that some of the people who not only review on this site but add comments after seem so thick and stuck up their own arses. The lack of constructive comments is clear. "Kasabishite!!" mmmmm, real clever, and Kasabian need to be "Killed immediately" for sounding like the 'Mondays'. Please??

Admittedly this album is not the best, but there are some quality songs on it. As a live band Kasabian are great and unfortunately the album doesn't get the same energy and power across.

The poor review and rating the album has recieved from Drowned in Sound will in no way affect the success or popularity of the band. and as for the "September 2006 - Kasabi-Who?" we all know that won't be the case, so live with it.

I'm off to read the NME, a real music magazine.

Re: Kasabian - Kasabian

That's the funniest thing I've ever read.
Enjoy your indie take on 'Bliss', chavtard.
