M83: Before The Dawn Heals Us

Of their second album, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Ghosts, M83's bio says that they "freed themselves of outside influences". If that's the case, French electronic wunderkind Anthony Gonzalez has dived back into the melting pot for this, their third adventure in interstellar soundscapes that evoke the silver screen as much as the many influences that pepper Before The Dawn Heals Us.

Their ambition is evident from the first seconds, unfolding with A Space Odyssey-reminiscent piano chimes and synths before blossoming into a harmonic chorus of Golden Age cinematic ooh-ing and aah-ing, as though Liz Taylor had just sauntered onscreen as Cleopatra, clad in a Hollywood glow. On paper it sounds profoundly pretentious and wholly unnecessary. Perhaps it is. It's awfully pretty though.

One can picture Gonzalez whizzing gleefully around the studio, leaping from computer to guitar to keyboards and back to computer again, throwing in sounds of every kind with fervour. It's not a chaotic record though; Gonzalez knows what he's doing, and paints a picture of visions vast and dauntless, twining his soft, near-feminine vocals around a spinning gyre of silken instrumentation, blessedly organic synths and, above all, arrow-sharp intent. Nothing on this record could be described as curtly as a 'song'. This is music in which the lyrics and sung melodies, complimentary as they are, are incidental, built over a solid foundation of tightly woven instrumental and electronic layers that by turn startle and lull.

M83 could have a nice line in writing soundtracks; in places Before... calls to mind Massive Attack collaborator and soundtrack bod Craig Armstrong, and the interludes throughout the record are nothing if not filmic, most literally the unsettling 'Car Chase Terror', dissolving a woman's terrified dialogue into a panicky race between pounding drums and searing atmospherics, while the thumping, swandive guitar squeal of 'A Guitar And A Heart' cries out for some visual drama to accompany it.

Their influences pop up with alarming frequency, e.g. the explosive, fuzzy influence and dual vocal harmonies of MBV and the Cocteau Twins colliding with Unkle's thoughful electronic sensibilities and the nectarine, bursting melancholia of Mew on the celestial 'Farewell/Goodbye'. It seems startling that in such a self-directed and single-minded record, so many influences bob visibly on the surface, but it doesn't detract from the impact or ingenuity of Before The Dawn Heals Us. For all its reference points, it's a remarkable and original record.

M83 are in their early twenties, yet Before The Dawn Heals Us is a work of tremendous maturity and scope. The fact that it's M83's third, and shows no sign of the spring of ideas running dry, gives us some indication of the talent we're dealing with here. Arresting in its beauty, dazzling in its diversity and fearless in its creative ambition, this record deserves to be cherished.

Aye, it is good. Have you heard Arovane? I've been liking them a lot of late.

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

actually i think it's just one guy. he might be German. But he makes a really cool, quite melodic, sometimes twinkly and scratchy electronica which is kinda halfway between autechre and boards of canada. It's wicked.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

didnt even know that they had a new one coming out!
...wonders at what point i stuck my head in the sand....

cant wait to hear this, dead cities... was so good.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

i loooove your list of rated music btw. pelican. mmm.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

'Tis all true. This record is great. Is it better than 'Dead Cities...'? Hmmm.....yes and no.

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

yes and no?!! ive not heard this yet, im desperate too, and 'dead cities...' was certainly something.... i dont really want to be disappointed by m83!

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

Oh lord. Don't Stand In The Flames is amazing. "deeeeee maaahhhhhhh". Its like electro MBV goodness. With handclaps. (at the end).

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

Ive had this record for a while now, and it is truly brilliant.

I managed to get their self-titled debut from amazon marketplace, and that too is amazing.

All three records are very different so are very difficult to compare.

Car Chase Terror is bloody amazing.

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

Car Chase Terror is the best thing they've done yet.

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

You think? I reckon 'Dead Cities...' and 'Before the Dawn...' have a lot in common.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

i don't know why dis doesn't just do away with its marks system. it seems like nearly all the albums reviewed get 4 out of 5, so what's the point?

plus it would make people focus entirely on the text. i'm sure the good writers would appreciate this.

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

i guess a lot of writers would rather expend their energy writing about something they really like [and it's rare that you encounter a record that really IS good enough for 5/5]. there's a lot of us to share records out between, particularly albums, and people don't often request things they know they'll hate. [although in fact this one was among a pile of randoms i was given.]

it's a fair point though.

Am I Listening to the Same Album???

OK, I've listened through this album numerous times, and it sounds.... in a word, terrible. I just can't believe it has had such a positive reaction on this site; just as much as I can't believe that m83 has produced this overblown cheese-fest of an album. It actually pains me to say that, such is my love for their previous work. But where "Dead Cities ..." succeeded was in its restraint and attention to mood. Even the "louder" tracks like "America" and "0078h" used subdued drums and focused on building intense layers of sound. But this album, on the other hand, is defined by its excess. Think of every bad song from every lame 80's hair band you can think of - this is what "Before The Dawn..." sounds like. Just listening to "Can't Stop," the single worst moment of this album, makes me die a little inside. When I first heard this album, a felt a lot of things: disbelief, anger, and finally a great sadness. I just hope to God that M83 learn from this mistake, and can go on to create something even nearly as beautiful as "Dead Cities..." In conclusion: stay as far away from this album as possible, and for the love of all things sacred, don't offer it praise!! Something evil has taken hold of M83, the last thing it needs is encouragement.

Re: Am I Listening to the Same Album???

You, Sir, are a cretin.

Re: Am I Listening to the Same Album???

I am certain you would be aware of this fact, for it most assuredly takes one to know one.

Overated

I have been reading some startiling reviews on this website, and I felt the need to SIGN UP just to post a warning to any and all M83 fans. If you liked dead cities, then I have a suggestion to you: do not buy this album. The ways that I was dissapointed by this album is uncountable. To say that this album is a break from its prior album, is a grave understatement. Gone are the captivating sounds and rhythms that songs like 0078h provided. Left to the curb are the flowing melodies and harmonies of Run into Flowers. All that is left is a hollow shell of music, a bombardment of noise that closely resembles an 80's rock band mixed with a sub-par electronic band. If anyone has been blessed with the experience of listening to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, you will find a striking resemblance in this record. The drumming, which before was done on a drum kit, giving the songs a distinct electronic feel, now is switched over to real drums. The effect not only strays away from M83's distinct style, but it gives their songs the 80's sound which comes across as stale and even hokey. The preverbal flag-carrier of the album is the song "can't stop" which made me consider being deaf not too much of a disadvantage when listening to this album. It cannot be understated how much this song hurt my soul, and for me to try and recall it from the deep recesses of my unconscious, let alone discribe the abhorrent harmony is beyond my ability. In the end, to say this album was disappointing is understating every opinion that I have of the album. To follow such a great album such as Dead Cities, with such a diseaster is just leave the fans with an incurable empty feeling and a bewilderment of the future of a band they once respected. I, and many other fans with me, are wondering how such a great band could completely change, not only direction, but style so rapidly between albums. I hope for the sake of fresh and innovative music, that M83 looks back on this album and laughs at its rookie mistakes. What the world needs least of all is watered down music, and the new M83 album provides this. If you like regurgitated musical ideas, then this is a good album to add to your collection.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

im still buying it.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

oh good it's not just me who went "what the hell?" when this thing started up clanking and bellowing like a big loud engine of some type. as brilliant as I thought "Dead Seas..." was this new effort is way too much jammed into too small a space. off the top of my head only Banco de Gaia manage to do that sort of thing well. free hint: lose the vocals or at least limit them. eesh. to the scared chyk on "car chase terror" all I want to do is scream "STFU!"

maybe with time this one will grow on me and I've got it going right now, but it's still a letdown.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

This is another amazing M83 album - slightly different in approach to Dead Cities - maybe the changes in personnel account for that - However the more I listen to it, the more I think its another masterpiece.

To pick up on barber6's points - there are more "bombardments of noise" but I love the contrast of those with the mellower parts. To expect another Dead Cities is unrealistic - that album is one of those one-offs. Maybe the ideas aren't so fresh here but it still works well for me.

When I think of impossible albums to follow I always think of Daft Punk - Homework was a classic - the thing that they eventually released after that was such a huge let down (and then they folded afaik) - M83 have thankfully avoided that in a big way - If Dead Cities never existed I think Before the Dawn would rightly be receiving unanimous praise from all those that discovered it.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

i can't believe how much their new single 'Don't Save Us' sounds like My Vitriol.

when i heard it on the radio, i thought it was the comeback of My Vitriol we've all been waiting for!!

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

Ok. First off. I am tired of people comparing albums to an artists earlier work. It is the natural progression for an artist to grow and mold to express themselves as time goes on. If they constantly made the same music and never pushed themselves...than what would they be?

With that rant out of the way...I have to say, I expected nothing short of greatness when I put the music into my CD Player for the first time. And in return, I had received greatness. The album has a direct 80s influence. But it is contemporary and groundbreaking in more ways than one. It is at times loud and crazy and then it fades into the soft bliss. M83 are the masters at bringing the listener up and down. The entire album is almost like a soundtrack in parts. It is very "filmic". It is beautiful in so many diffrent ways. "Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts" brought me to tears and this album is no diffrent. I have seen what powerful music can do. If your looking for a band to give you track after track of the same stuff, don't buy this CD. But if you want moving, evolving, and beautiful blissed out harmony than "Before the Dawn Heals us is a great choice.

[4.5/5]

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

"If they constantly made the same music and never pushed themselves...than what would they be?"

Oasis?

Re: M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

Well, once again, the masses are misguided on this one. To never compare a band to their former albums is just plain stupid. You did it in your comment, by comparing how different M83 is from themselves. While I agree, bands should not be complacent in their own style of music, that does not mean that you can't compare their previous works to their newer works. In this case I am comparing Dead Cities as a better album at achieving it's goals then this albums attempt at whatever sound/goal that they are trying to accomplish. I agree with the writer in that this album has a filmic quality, and it moves almost seemlessly between loud and soft noise. With that said, it's still just noise and futhermore it's just bad. It provides an empty mellow sound that does not leave you fulfilled but rather unsatisfied. With the comment to M83 being masters of bringing you up and down, I guess so. I mean, the album definetly has the rollar coaster feel. But the fact that it moves from soft to loud and from noisey to quiet does not equate to a good sound, or even a good idea. Finally, to say that I never denied that M83 should remain in a stagnet posistion that they were in after creating Dead Cities. I was only sorely dissapointed at the direction they took for the aforementioned reasons.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

I heard this before 'dead cities'. Its different. So what? I like it, its great. pompous and stupid in places, but great.

M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us

I think 'Before the Dawn Heals Us' is a great record. There are some pretty striking differences if you compare it to 'Dead Cities', but I don't think they make this album worse in any way. The use of live drums and guitars give more depth to it as a whole and I quite enjoy the pompous loud bits !
I don't see why some people feel this album has betrayed what they came to expect from M83. Enjoy it for what it is rather than what you wanted it to be.
