Lovvers: Near Enough For Jazz / Special Needs

by Mike Diver

Lovvers’ second single might lack the immediate ferocity of their self-titled debut EP, but there is nevertheless a rawness to this double A-side slice of finely under-produced wax that resonates deep within the guts of anyone raised on a steady diet of underground punk rock.

‘Near Enough For Jazz’ is a tumbling slow-motion riot, all build and no pop, no climax that truly closes proceedings; that said, a ker-pow ending isn’t necessary here, as the fuzz-squeal of guitars being shredded to absolute crap by boys not yet old enough to know better is perfectly invigorating. And the vocals: near incomprehensible, but spat with wonderful sincerity and commitment.

Flipside ‘Special Needs’ is faster than its companion piece, with tuneful la-la-las soldered onto the band’s familiarly lo-fi vocals. A mid-song break – a mighty tear in the track, if we’re being honest – exposes its innards and the stink’s mightily refreshing; then, the la-las return and… that… is… it. All done and dusted in a fraction over two minutes, and all the more excellent for its briefness.

An album of material like this might test the patience, but on short-play offerings like this (and live) Lovvers are a force to be absolutely reckoned with. Impressively boisterous stuff.

i like them

but they would never get the exposure they are getting without the murder of guy in the band.
the single is a nifty little number though. i like it.

This is

Very Very good.

ha

Because Sean is like Bono right?

Certainly more developed

Django Reinhardt intro, some more advanced dynamics.. Special Needs is superb. I think with some different types of song the album could be excellent.

Django...

Has Henry lost a finger?

Ach, an album would be immense. I'd love 'em to make all the songs dissolve into one another with noisy guitar in-between each track like when they play live.

Indeed, that noisy guitar set my friend's pulse on edge. When he saw 'em live he commented he was "impressed by the guitarist's accurate use of the loop pedal".

I do hope Mr.Diver will review their next release in such a manner.

"An accurately activated loop pedal opens proceedings here before the bassist comes in bang on the money. He drops out of time after three bars but quickly falls back in time. The singer comes in slightly late and continues to slur in a most unmusical manner. The synchopated chops from the drummer are spot on and all in all this is an accurately played piece, if a little let down by the vocal delivery."

As long has he's got his feet

Or his accurate loop work would be spoiled, although he could learn to play it with his knee.

Django makes an unexpected appearence between songs, not as you might enjoy, a squall of feedback.

I heard

he likes fucking Geldoff and Blair.
