As this is being written, the television is on: pictures, no sound. A title bar informs me that I am watching Klaxons, but ‘Divebomb’ is coming out of my computer speakers. This is an agreeable state of affairs. I swap (pictures and sound from the box in the corner, nothing from the box on my lap), but this is not an agreeable state of affairs.
Unfortunately, The Whip are by no means a brilliant band, and ‘Divebomb’ is only strictly average, even if that does make it significantly better than the majority of bands currently peddling the “oh look, we use laptops and guitars” chicanery. It’s so utterly, utterly ‘80s that the main riff is just like, um, ‘Hang Tough’ by proto-boyband and professional guilty pleasures New Kids On The Block. In fact, play it out of some tinny headphones and it sounds like the sort of music that came on when you paused Galaxian on the old Amiga 500.
The shrill beeps and beats that characterise ‘Divebomb’ could easily be off-cuts from a Daft Punk single, and if those Gallic robotwats had released this then it’d no doubt have sold by the bucketload. It’s not bad, per se, but works primarily as homage to the decade of shoulder pads and Thatcherism. Maybe if The Whip put their talents to less derivative use they could be quite interesting.

Ben Patashnik is a bell end
this has obviousley been written by the most backward reviewer ever... maybe he should try and open his mind to other types of music rather than just getting off on the new Automatic single... Loser!! He should sort his neck out and drag his sorry ass to see them play this song live (recommended to take a fresh pair of underpants) and revel in the awesomeness of it!!
who is this guy?
all the reviews I've read of the whip seem to be unsatisfyingly average. Why can't people appreciate new music instead of trying to compare it to older, boring crap? Ben Patashnik should definitely go to see a band live before he gives another ridiculous review to a band who deserve more. Divebomb, I reckon, is the best song on the album and what amazes me is how it still hasn't got boring even though it's quite repetitive and I've listened to it a million times. I hope the Whip get noticed because I'm sure they could make it big.
