What, no Brian Wilson? Have you all gone insane!?

    Seriously, though...
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Antics is boring, good band - shit album
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    No. It's a great album.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Its not the best of they year though is it? Surely, er...the best of the beatles.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    YMSS = very very cool.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I'd just like to take this oppotunity to sack everyone who voted for The Killers and Hope of the States. Infact, we should publicly reveal and then flog said sad indieviduals.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I reckon the polling was rigged; Interpol number one? Above Bon Jovi's 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong? Hmm...

I remember when Bloc Party were stuffing envelopes in my lounge; right bunch of messy bastards they were.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Guilty. Shall I get my P45? :-)
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Polls schmolls. But then, I'm very glad to finally see some recognition for the Jimmy Eat World album...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    It's a nearly-great album :)
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I would like to THANK (ie shower with kisses etc etc etc) any member of staff that voted for Isis, Icarus Line or Blood Brothers or DEP.

    Sometimes, I love you guys...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Icarus Line woulda been me.
Even if someone has stolen my cd and left me with nothing but an empty case for the past few months. This someone may have been a drunk version of myself putting it in the wrong case. But still.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    oh my God !

The Streets get mention over Biffy Clyro. Heaven save us from DIS writers !

    :-)
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Can't totally remember what I suggested as a top ten, but it was probably the same list I sent to rock sound.
Isis topped their poll, and rightly so.
Shame there's no room for Comets On Fire in the DiS best-of - I swear it continues to improve with each listen. If I reviewed it again, now, I'd be hard pushed NOT to give it a maximum score. That's my number 4 in the RS poll.

  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    guilty as charged.

however, i would like to think i'm at least slightly responsible for getting the gbv album up there, and may i congratulate and thank anyone who voted for that :)

  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    lists suck. :)
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

who the fuck voted bloc party. you should be shot.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I agree, clearly people should be shot for voting for a particular musical group that they quite like on a website. Its one of the most disgraceful things man/womankind can do.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    "8. Arcade Fire - Funeral"

Who the hell are Arcade Fire? Their not even on the DiS directory...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Oh patience there Ramzy....either wait till Feb 28th when it comes out on rough Trade or get it on import and prepare to listen to 2005's album of the year. I promise you will be impressed!!
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Here here! Glad to see the Stills record do well, though.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Oi! What about the singles!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    pretty good on the whole....

except that you left out 21 of the good albums that came out this year....

electrelane? miss kittin? automato? mark lanegan? devendra banhart? felix da housecat? munk? golden virgins? secret machines? seafood? six by seven? the delgados? venetian snares? modey lemon? sex in dallas?

i know they're subjective things these lists and ultimately pointless, but its a bit, you know, NME?

it doesn't seem very representative of what DiS was a year or so ago or maybe i've moved on, i don't know

but so many of these albums will be the equivalents of menswear, echobelly, marion, sleeper, gay dad, etc in 3 months time
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

They're coming soon. Real soon, promise. Gareth still needs to compile them. And thought we'd make it a seperate announcement.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

have to agree completely on band/album/live acts of the year. I'm impressed.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Your welcome - and thanks for the recommendation. But EMBD rank above Mclusky? Bah! Humbug!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    When were we polled?
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Talk about disappointing.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I HATE this end of year poll. It is so NME ish and middle of the road. I mean recycled bankrupt retro rock- Interpol and the Killers. I thought drownedinsound was about New Music, the stuff not covered in the sell-out mainstream press. i read drownedinsound everyday because I fell alienated by the NME but this end of year poll is crap. Soon drownedinsound will become as middle of the road as Q magazine. and we will only have Teletext to save us.

Where is Wolf Eyes and USAISAMONSTER and Electrelane in the albums of the year? I am glad to see ISIS in there though ( I agree with Mike Diver for once).
What the hell are the Shins doing in Live act of the year. (though the Pixies reform gigs were magical) How about Mistys Big Adventure in the live bands of the year. Or the Oxes. Or Cobra Killer. No mention of Kraftwerk? That is criminal - as that was surely the most perfect and beautiful live concert of the year. PAtti Smith? Television? No one.

2004 has been a wonderful year for music. Sadly this is not summed up in the end of year poll. Last years end of year poll was much better and representative. Have u recruited lots of crap writers or something?

    Agreed with Vamous That:
so many of these albums will be the equivalents of menswear, echobelly, marion, sleeper, gay dad, etc in 3 months time
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    More missing:
TODD for album and live act of the year too. Part-chimp for live act of the year. Lightning Bolt for Live act of the year. Fly Pan Am... Hot Snakes for album and live act. Converge for album and live act.... Low, A Silver Mt Zion, Wolf eyes, Go team!,Hey Collosos, Cove,Twilight singers for live act...and so much more...all bands supported by drownedinsound - no where.
maybe we should be polled again?
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    very indie innit?
'Antics' was good, but in reality only half the songs are up to scratch... it's a nice vote of confidence for an emerging band, but 'Antics' didn't even make my personal top ten, as much as I wanted it to. It could have been so much more than it is.
It's funny how there isn't a sniff of genuine originality until we get to bottom 4. is this DiS staking out a musically conservative retro rock 'n' roll aesthetic? Whether by accident or design it would certainly seem so...
But, hey, it's not me, it's the DiS ppl, and this is what they like. Um. Merry Xmas.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I think that this is a fairly joyous list, but I still prefer the DiS 2003 list.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

the top 20 poll is representative of what is reviewed/listed on DiS, and reflects whole heartedly in the general response these bands have got from DiS readers and writers alike. People who say the the likes of Bloc Party shouldnt have been polled so high, well they're often the same people that said they were amazing ago when they first heard She's Hearing Voices. A lot of peoples responses are just attempts at 'im more indie than you because the bands i would have put there are known by about 5 people', well thet is tres idiotic. Obviously everyone is going to have different views on who should be included but it's based upon those that are talked about on DiS, and it does a very good job. It is largely very good, and im very glad to see the inclusion of Isis so high. I'm very glad more and more people are enjoying their brilliance.

  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

But don't you realise that with a poll that has hundreds, if not thousands of people sending in their lists, there are going to be certain albums that will re-appear, such as those above. Do you really think 300 people would have put down USAISAMONSTER in their top 10?

Chances are that every person who listed ISIS also listed a number of more obscure releases - Old Man Gloom, Burning Skies, Sayyadina... I certainly did, hence the more popular releases get collated into the Top 20.

I wouldn't say they really reflected DiS' readership. in fact, they probably mean nothing.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Everybody's entitled to an opinion of course. I would like to express in the friendliest possible way that I think "best of" lists are for cretins and that this is one of the more depressingly predictable ones i've seen, but that's just me.

However, while I realise utterly despising Franz Ferdinand may come from watching too much MTV2, and there's been some kind of edict from on high to all music journalists to shit themselves over Interpol on pain of death, and to pretend to find The Streets clever, and that the Scissor Sisters really are part of a fiendish plot to make us all hate gay people from New York....but.....the...Killers....???? I don't get that one. Anyone?
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

The Killers rock and Hot Fuss is amazing, so well done the "best of" list in showing this!!
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

the killers? scissor sisters? how? why? no.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

killers have a couple of acceptable singles. shocking album, though
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    The Killers... eeek!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

i think its a good poll .... nicely represents all the top DiS style releases of the year

    wait ........ no thisGIRL !!!
you guys didnt even vote for your own record label ?!

anyway... no real problem with whose on the list, all did good things

though reuben shouldve been higher ;)
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Biffy Clyro, at least the public love them eh?

    shite list like..
    'mon the Biffy

    Reuben, number 12? seriously?

    fuck sake
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I'm partial to a bit of BC, but I'm sure many people will join me when I say the next person I see or hear utter the phrase "mon the Biffy", is fucking dead. Their new album was average compared to the first two. Admittedly that still makes it better than the fucking Killers.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Jimmy Eat World!!! I didn't even see that one! Ha ha. I don;t know about NME, this sounds like some broadsheet newspaper critic's choice. All you missed off was Razorlight and Keane! Jokers.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

23? 23? jeesh best album of not only his career but of just about anyones, yet inexpicably the terminally dull futureheads are at 5.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Yeh because some broadsheet newspaper columnist would pick Mylo and the Dillinger Escape Plan, retard. Hope of the States are just too overrated in my opinion. Loving the No.1 though.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Last year people said exactly the same thing about the writers' poll.

You have to take into account the fact that - most of the time - more esoteric favourites are going to be nominated by individuals rather than 'the collective' and hence remain unrecognised. As a result, no Venetian Snares. Or Dead Texan, or ambient recordings of clouds released in limited runs of two.

    It's just a list.

  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Where's Keane, eh? EH? EH!!!??!?!?!?!?!?
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

ive noticed there's no review of biffy c's infinity land, GET IT SORTED!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

What, The Rasmus don't even get a look-in? A travesty...
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

nice to see the the stills in there (didnt even make nme's 'top' 50!), but where's the walkmen, the go! team and TV on the radio?

ah good ol' lists, bound to get people talking.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Someone accused me of having commercial indie taste, and really that's the truth of it. But I've bought many records based DiS reviews. Some good, some notsa good, a few exceptional. My point is DiS spreads the good news of new music and that's a noble endeavor. sean and his pals deserve a pat on the back, job well done recognition.

As for lists, hey what's the big deal? Whatever device we use to stimulate banter is ok and fine by me. I think it's funny how we tend to champion the same bands and slag the same ones. I'm surprised, for example, BRMC is all but ignored. Keane ought to be on the heal of every one's shoe, but you'd think they were the only ones. I got two shoes is what I'm saying! :-)

Hey sean, in yer half-in-the-bag zonked out fantasies do you ever allow yerself to think you may be the next Richard Branson?

"....oh, excuse me!! Sir sean." ;-)
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

It's a poor year when an unfinished and below-par Elliot Smith record is the third best of the year. I can't really see the appeal of most of the acts listed... but then i suppose i don't understand fashion. I guess the killers are good pop music, and The Dillinger Escape Plan are pretty damn special, it's true. Was it really a good year for new music in general, though? How many throwback indie bands does the world need?

Album of the year for me - Amplifier.

    Rock and/or Roll.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

oh, come on, I realise there are a couple of exceptions, no need for the insults, fuckwit
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Yeah, but Gay Dad were fucking great.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I reckon it was a great year for bands (live gigs/discovering exciting new bands/scenes) but as far as albums go, it wasn't my favourite year.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

My word according to that it was a bad year.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

i would just like to take this opportunity to claim some credit for blood brothers' (underrated) appearance in top 20 and denounce all that voted for the killers. you are rubbish, basically. x
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

"I'm partial to a bit of BC, but I'm sure many people will join me when I say the next person I see or hear utter the phrase 'mon the Biffy'"

Haha, get a grip you snob.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    i liked sleeper.

    *returns to her corner*

wait - AND gay dad. leave me alone. shut up. shush.

    xxx
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

maaan. and i replied to the wrong post. sorry. i shouldn't be allowed on messageboards at this time in the morning.

    xxx
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Marion were a great band and you know it! They even had a 2nd superb album too.

  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Interpol and 6music get a look in - so things arent that bad
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

no gang gang dance!! shocked i do say.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

True. They were one of Britain's best bands from the nineties, and *shamefully*, there's no profile for them on here.
I mean, even Gay fucking Dad have a profile.

C'mon DiS. Grant my Christmas wish.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

It's an all right list. From what I've heard the Killers album is about half a great record. The Elliott Smith album is good but not as good as the list suggests. Good to see it getting recognition anyway though. Also nice to see Jimmy Eat World up there. The HOTS album is well overrated. I definitely want to hear the Morrissey and McLusky records.

The best thing about that list though is Arcade Fire at 8 on the readers' record of the year when it hasn't even been released in the UK yet! The hype is right for once - I promise you, this WILL be number 1 on the staff list this time next year.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

The USAISAMONSTER record ain't all that, but Wolf Eyes... might have crept into my personal top 25, should I have one.

I think that theis year's poll is a lot more refelctive of the site's writers' different tastes - to have the icarus line and dillinger shoulder to shoulder with the killers and interpol is healthy - it shows that we're able to cover all bases. Sure, the really obscure stuff doesn't get an overall look in cos of what Mat's said above (I mean, where's Rhythm of Black Lines? That album slays!), but, for what it's worth, THIS is the best run down of 2004's big releases that you'll see anywhere. I man, Isis in the top 10!? On an indie-rock website! GET IN.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Shame about what happened to them in the end, wonder what they are all doing now?

They still get played on my iPod occasionally.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

whilst 'Antics' is ok, it's a bit of a shame that a second album that a lot of people seem to concur doesn't match up to the debut ends up at the top. This is pretty obviously due to it being about no. 7 in everyone's lists, which is fair enough. Don't know how that explains the Stills though- 2 strong tracks, 2 decent ones and the rest is a tad vomitous. strange to think that people liked it more than something like Franz, which is at least a consistent record.

as for the missing, would definitely concur with whoever has mentioned Electrelane and ThisGIRL. Liars, Blonde Redhead and Bjork leap to mind as well, bless em. ho hum.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Seriously? You know it'll be Bloc Party.... just the way it's going to be...

Agree with many of the comments made here - thing is, it was a poll, with our writers asked for their top ten, and a points system was used. Ergo, while the Killers was not many, if anybody's choice of the BEST record of the year, it appeared in a hell of a lot of top tens, hence its final standing.

We had over 125 albums nominated in the 40 or so writers lists - that reflects the diversity of the site; whereby the final 25 is slightly more homogenised. But that's the way we ran the poll, and that's the way it is.

Personally, seven of my ten didn't even make this list, but it's a representation. And I think it's a decent poll. As one chap explained, there wasn't going to be 20 votes for Lightning Bolt or whoever - as good as they might be, our writer's personal tastes are too disparate.

I think that our list still highlights some good things though - the Isis Mcluskys, Dillingers and GBVs of this world. DiS is meant to be an accessible new music orientated site, not a cool style mag, so it's fair that Franz and Futureheads et all are in their, as they have touched the wider music community, and they're debut albums.. as a good handful of the top 25 writer's poll is, which shouldn't be overlooked. In fact, the only veterans are really Morrissey and GBV (RIP).

Also, the readers poll was taken from all the postings on the messageboards, which was done for two reasons

    1) Those who log in and comment and contribute should be rewarded, thanked and recognised for their involvement in the site and DiS community

    2) If we announced a reader's poll we'd have been flooded, and probably it would have been rigged by countless bands, and a band probably called knobflob would of won. It was guerilla polling of sorts...

but... I think the list is pretty reasonable.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

don't be dissing knobflob. it might well have been jetplane landing though, they pretty much write the book on guerilla marketing.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Oppotunity? Indieviduals? Christ your spelling's getting worse mate. :)
I'm proud to say that I voted for the HoTs album because I think it's freaking ace. I didn't vote for The Killers because although I liked the singles I didn't think the album was strong enough.
Let me know when you want my public humilation to begin Sean dahling.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Looking at our staff list, it's quite funny how only two of the records I voted for make up the top 25.

I feel so out of the loop and SAD.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I do find myself questioning many in the list. These aren't the same people we write with are they?

    Meh, we're all frauds really.

Plus: where is our list of singles?
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I wondered when people would start to realise...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

THEUSAISAMONSTER records pisses on the fucking Killers - whatever you say. This list sounds like a filtered-down NME/Q list. This is a WRITERS poll, not a Ant and Dec populist vote. Writers who are interested in independent and new music (which drownedinsound represents) should know about Load records and be on the pulse. It just sounds like they just watch too much MTV2. I bet Zane Lowe would really approve of this poll (I cant say anymore lower than that). I think there should be a Stalinist purge of the new drownedinsound writers.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    YES! GOOD IDEA!
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Can someone post a link to last years poll please? Thank you.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

yah. only 3 of mine too.
    harumph.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    this guy is spot on.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

What were your 3 then? I hope it wasnt the Killers! I would give Mistys Big Adventure Live act of the year for last year and this year. I seen them 8 times. Sheer Joy. Nice to meet you there Adie.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Good poll, always produces intersting results.

    one thing
last year we had 75 albums? as a result, i got into about 10 new bands. none of them in the top 25
i know it's asking loads (i'm not being facetious)
but is there any possibility of a top 75?
    i'd be much appreciative :)
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Didn't realize that only one black artist released an album this year. Otherwise you guys would have picked more, eh? The Beatles were white. How 'bout giving The Grey Album a nod and a wink!
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I'd like to see that too. I thought there were less records I was exited about this year. But a look at last years poll reveals that a lot of good albums were further down.

Good to se Franz Ferdinand and The Stills in there though, unlike us readers the staff seem to remember the first half of the year. Disappointing no Rilo Kiley, but maybe next year...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

it's all a bit schmindie for my liking
but that's cos i forgot to vote
    so i can't complain
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Very good to see Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies chosen, very well deserved.
But Antics as the top album? Now I like Interpol, and was really looking forward to this album's release. But it was so disappointing, it would not get into my top 5 or 10 albums of the year, let alone top!
Where is Hurrah!... ymss, or The Fall of Math 65 Days of Static or many more releases that have much greater inventiveness and power to amaze and engage? I for one expected better...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

the three of mine that got in are

    futureheads
    scissor sisters
    streets
    shins

    oh wait, that's four.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    polls are stupid.

    xiu xiu's fabulous muscles anyone?
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

This has nothing to do with snobbery, just alarm at the boy-band style obsession people seem to have with Biffy Clyro at the moment, like if they recorded and released the sound of their own dysentery-based diarrhoea, people would still worship them. There is no way their new album belongs on the list - it wasn't enough of a step on from earlier stuff and sounds kind of half-arsed.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Has the Rilo Kiley album come out yet?
    Surely not.
I woulda noticed if it had as the last one was ace.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

The new one is even better; even more confident.
31 January release according to amazon.
I had to buy it on import because I couldn't wait.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I think we may well do a longer list. Praps not numbered, but what got 5 votes, 2 votes, etc... or would people prefer it under authors as we did one year? and as kerrang and rocksound do...
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Authors sounds good.
Then we can all see what Raz would have voted for.
And applaud/berate (delete as appropriate) those who voted for the killers.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

(wipes a tear from eye). Thank you.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    four?

count yourself as part of the loop. i only got one (Futureheads). *sob* i was so hoping Bearsuit would have got in...

    when's the singles one again?
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

good point actually, i would have thought 65Days had made enough impact recently...
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I have to agree that many of the bands on the lists are rather disappointing to me. I also agree about 65days and YMSS. 65days made Rock Sound's top albums of 2004 list as well as other polls, and YMSS have had some big support slots this year, and have still continued to push their musical boundaries. If we are ever going to move forward musically I think it is bands like these who will be our best hope for the future.

Having read so many encouraging comments on this site all year against the endless barrage of derivative retro bands and in favour of bands who are trying to do something a bit more new and original, it is a shock to see the same old names cropping up here. But there are also some good, interesting bands on the list - which gives me hope for next year.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Well yes, USA pishes on a lot of the records in that list, in my opinion, but it's a poll, so individual tastes aren't all that strongly represented.

Still, I packed the USA record today, so if you come to the Marquee tonight and ask for it, I shall play it.

And, since you're on a Load tip, I also have LB and the almighty Pink & Brown with me. So nerrrr.

No Wolf Eyes, though. There might be children about.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    YAY!

Now to find out how to add info.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Some questions...
    1. Is it just me or is the second half of the Killers album absolute turd?
    2. Where are Maroon 5?

(On another note, someone yesterday tried to claim to me that both Maroon 5 and Nickelback are better than Metallica. Oh dear. "How do you dance to Metallica?")

Panopticon is my album of the year. Even better than Oceanic.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Yeah can we do that? I totally missed out cus I haven't got the internet yet and only one album I would have voted for is on the whole list.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Cool. Sounds good but I have to babysit.

The Poll. Well, John Peels festive 50 is a poll and you still get obscure as fuck shit in the top ten and it is consistently brilliant and eclectic and at complete divergence from the Q/MTV2 fodder. And that is voted by 1000s of people. So that is no excuse. (BTW John Peels biography is half price in Books Etc. Christmas sales and has every Festive 50 listed) I think a few sackings are in order.

I think there should an article called the most OVERLOOKED RECORDS of 2005 with no records from that poll included.

(NB: Were you at the Blood Red Shoes/Hey Collosos gig at the Windmill when no one was there? It must have been one of yr lookalikes.)
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    i'd like a longer list
just because a lot of "hidden gems" came lower down, but that's obvious right

reading what each author said requires a) knowledge of the author's tastes, which not a lot of readers have, and b) a lot of patience, to trawl through the lot.

    longer list is nicer imho
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Wasn't at the Windmill, but they're playing Infinity pretty soon.
    HC, that is.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    oh yeah me too. shit
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

mind, if anyone can be arsed tuning in to 95.8FM on DAB or in Merseyside we's doing trax of the year on boxing night at midnight. Except I won;t actually be there cos I'm gonna be pissed in Wales. but the show will.
It's on bbc.co.uk/liverpool as well innit.

    woink clonk
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

It would be a bit cheeky to put one of our records in our record of the year list, even tho I do believe it's the record of the year - else why else would we have released it?
See Rocksound and some of the Kerrang writers agree it's one of the records of the year. Hurrah!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Who gives a ruminant's middle stomach about lists?
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

The NME and Q End Of Year polls were shit this year. Utter fucking crap. Some good choices however, by DiS. No Killswitch Engage though, probably because you never reviewed the album. Anyway, I may as well give my top 10 albums of 2004, since I'm typing this up...Here we go.

    1. Killswitch Engage - The End Of Heartache
    2. Hundred Reasons - Shatterproof Is Not A Challenge
    3. Biffy Clyro - Infinity Land
    4. 36 Crazyfists - A Snow Capped Romance
    5. Incubus - A Crow Left Of The Murder
    6. Jimmy Eat World - Futures
    7. Lostprophets - Start Something
    8. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
    9. The Music - Welcome To The North
    10. Hollywood Ending - Praying To Ficton

    Anyone disagree, please tell me.
  • The Music bang stuff; make 'epic' soundtrack

i disagree, i think incubus are pretty rubbish. and the interpol/hots ablums were _definately_ better than the streets album, in my opinion you should give them a listen.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Hi. The best sort of thing for this is either the knowing but still ridiculous 'TOP 100 TUNES OF 2004', or the serious but vague 'RECORDS THAT ARE MILDLY IMPORTANT AND WE MAYBE RECKON YOU SHOULD BUY'.

    I think.

Also anyone stating 'Suchandsuch are rubbish, why have you got them in?!' is an idiot.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

The Killers? You are a fucking joke!

No BRIAN WILLSON, No RAZORLIGHT? You are fucking crazy.

  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Interpol's new album - Rubbish
    The Killers - Rubbish
    Morrissey's new album - Rubbish
Fucking Reuben above Mclusky? - Rubbish

Where the fuck are TV On The Radio?

Somethimes I just think these things are designed to piss me off.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    That's cus they are.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I think its funny, cos no matter what was on the list, someone would be pissed that their fave band wasn't year. cudos for putting the blood brothers' with "Crimes" at 15 tho, can't stop listening to it! And jetplane at 3 for lvie act of the year, fuck yeah! "there is no courage..." is the anthem of the new year i feel!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Did Interpol bung DiS? because to my ears at least Antics is a bit rubbish.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    in no order

    blood brothers
    reuben
    girls aloud
    mastodon
    icarus line
    maroon 5
    killers
    dillinger
    scissor scistors
    80s matchbox

wow that was 10 as well
    that's my top 10 then
    sorted
i think thats kijnda fallen into order as well
    i love my brain
    it's awesome

lets all look out for some devastatorous metal next year
    there is much
    oh much
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Ah ah ah, ouaf ouaf, hihihi, hooooo hooooo.
This poll is the best joke of both 2004 and it will last me for the better half of 2005.
    -1 Antics
    -2 Hot Fuss
The addition of Razorlight in that top 3 would have been the final blow in a: favorites>Dis>Delete kind of way.

Just a reminder of what 2004 meant for me in terms of record making (remember what it means? work of art than kind of shit)

    Hot Snakes
    Joanna Newsom
    Stars
    Stina Nordenstam
    Windsor of the Derby
    DFA 1979
    The Go team
    The Walkmen
    22-20's
    Adem
    Devendra Bahnart
    Iron & Wine
Pinback (common Fucking Pinback are you deaf or what?)
    Ratatat
The Hives (you should know them they're Mtv)
    Brian Wilson ???????????????????????????????????
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

AH AH AH AH AH Ah AH ....Mmmm ( I think I choked !!!!)

  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Franz Ferdinand far outstrip the Stills even in there over played Hollyoaks soundtrack styleee
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I really don't like Interpol, and i'm sick of comparisons to Joy Division.

I really don't like Interpol, and i'm sick of comparisons to Joy Division.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Lets put all the art punk shite in the poll!
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

load of bollocks that list. i couldnt disagree more there have been loads of great albums this year and the FUCKING KILLERS are #2 there album sucks
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

i agree on the majority of that list (well except for the top five in each album list). dunno why eits got higher than ASMZ or Mono on the live list, but there you go.
and 'hurrah' wasnt an album, so it cant be an album of the year, no matter how awesome it was/is.
it seems like i was the only one disappointed with the new ISIS album. i just dont really see anything to keep you intrested except the end of 'backlit' and the whole of 'altered course'. 'Oceanic' is in my top 5 of all time though
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Meh...Panopticon's fucking genius. So Did We is probably my favourite Isis song of all time. Having said that, I'd probably put Cult Of Luna as my album of the year purely for the massive strides they made with Salvation.

  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

stars, windsor of the derby, devendra banhart = fantastic

Where was Aereogramme's mini album Seclusion?
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Some albums that I'd personally have gone for would be these:

    Miss Kittin - I Com
[the real] Tuesday Weld - I, Lucifer
Sons And Daughters - Love The Cup
Gary Wilson - Mary Had Brown Hair
    Nouvelle Vague - Nouvelle Vague
    Youssou N'Dour - Egypt
    Roger Robinson - Illectica
Coco Rosie - La Maison De Mon Reve
    Datblygu (the reissued box set)
    Frank Black Francis
Ben Harper And The Blind Boys Of Alabama - There Will Be A Light
A Guy Called Gerald - To All Things What They Need
    Clinic - Winchester Cathedral

probably think of more soon as I post this but oh well

  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    * chuckles to self*

i think their new album is as good as the other 2 if not better . i think they are progressing and not putting out the same shite like some bands.

also i dunno why this hatred for the killers?? fair enough they get alot of coverage from nme etc and are played TO DEATH but i think the album is alright
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    like Nick Cave
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

not likely ! the stills are decent
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

no Gen. No one should ever have liked Sleeper. Bad bad bad.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    great mince pies this year.

im sure someone else has already mentioned this, but i thought homesongs by adem was really very good.

    yum.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

your ex-lover is dead/reunion by stars and take me out by the franz, are my songs of year - what are yours???
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

It's great to see a real debate on here, but let's remember a lot of obscure acts were forgotten because the bigger acts are played more and get more coverage. If it had just been fifty obscure acts on the list, people would have moaned about the fact that great mainstream music wasn't on there i.e Franz Ferdinand. I broadly agree with the top ten.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Two more things;

    1) I called chiaroscuro a retard earlier in this thread, I apologise for that.

    2) And where's Graham Coxon, I thought he might not be on here because the album of his was released in 2003 but it wasn't and it wasn't on last year's list either. Where is the Coxon-man? The songs on that album are brilliant.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

I've only heard one of those top 25 albums all the way through. And that was only once. I own two of the others but I haven't listened to them yet. I'm more indie than any of ya.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    WHERE WE'RE THESE!!??

    Mew - Frengers
    The Velvet Teen - Elysium
    Lovedrug - Pretend Your Alive
    Rufus Wainwright - Want Two
    Death From Above 1979 - Your A Woman, I'm A Machine
    Sara Slean - Day One
The French Kicks - Trial Of The Centure
The Walkmen - Bows and Arrows
    The Veils - Runaway Found
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

    Wasn't Frengers 2003?
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Yeah. And Rufus isnt out here until March too.
I voted for The Veils but sadly no-one else did, theyd rather vote for the ruddy Killers.
  • Re: DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

DFA1979 isn't out til this year.
  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

Maybe everyone is a bit confused with what it means to be making music. What we seem to have here is a shit load of bands (and some writers) desparately trying to be indie, whatever that means. The poll has the most stonking lack of originality I have seen in music for years. All the bands that I've seen and heard this year sound indie but have no spirit of music. As if Joy Division and the post-punk (which is a more trendy indie way of saying 80's) made the perfect indie sounding record and now Interpol, Killers, Futureheads, Bloc Party etc. all sound not just the same but really really old. Indie doesn't mean copying the 80's and neither does it mean attempting to be the only fan of a band who will be massive in a year and gloating about it. Indie means independent and as nearly every record company is owned by another (much bigger) company at the moment indie should mean challenging the establishment and not just pandering to a tired old sound just because the kids wanna hear it. Well done to DiS for trying to be a bit subversive by adding some 'beat' music but the Streets, Dizzee Rascal and Mylo dont really do anything very spectacular- there is indie hip hop out there too (Check out MF Doom and Edan). So, rant over, heres a top ten:
    Madvillainy-Madvillain
    Blueberry Boat- Fiery Furnaces
    Franz Ferdinand-FF
    Who Killed...-The Zutons
    Smile-Brian Wilson
    MM Food-MF Doom
    Welcome to the North-The Music
    Keep it Solid Steel-Mr Scruff
The Desert Sessions 9/10-Josh Homme and Friends
    From a Basment on a Hill-Elliott Smith
Finally, Icarus Line are VERY wank. and Sleeper were alright, but no Kenickie

  • DiS end of year polls! Records! Bands! Gigs!

The Walkmen - The Rat is genius, but one song does not an album make. I was sorely, sorely disappointed at Glasto.
  • future

I live in the future. 2005 will be much better. And don't go to Glastonbury, you'll get soaked.
