At last, Wales' biggest dance all-dayer Escape has a proper headliner act with Underworld, the half-Welsh titans of the UK dance scene. The band that formed 28 years ago in Cardiff show no signs of throwing the towel in, either live or in the studio, continuing as they are to release their massive output through both downloads and nicely packaged CDs.
The sun is benevolently shining but staying cool is not a practical option at any of the five genre-themed arenas scattered around the Singleton Park. By early evening, bizarre columns of testosterone-rich perspiration steam, the freaky antithesis of dry ice, can be seen pouring skywards from the tent openings. Muscled up 'royd boys and Balearic pretty things, several in matching outfits, drift around the park seeking thrills and chills, and the Raveology tent sends out a hard beats remix of Underworld's ‘Born Slippy’ that points towards the big finale.
As the last rays of the sun hit huge inflatable flowers that decorating the main stage, Underworld appear. Dripping lustre, front man Karl Hyde (in a shirt as sparkly as a glitterball) leaps and poses to 'Cowgirl' (“an eraser of love”), a renowned club classic. The energy ignites instantly and the nurtured excitement progresses into 'Beautiful Burnout' from the band's current album Oblivion With Bells (review). Then there's the to-be-expected hands-in-the-air happiness of 'Two Months Off'. Each song has been supported by different background of stage graphics, be they stills of splintered ice, retro Space Invaders monitor screens or colour-changing inflatable glo-stick towers. The visuals for 'King Of Snake' cause much excitement as Hyde's big close-up face lights up the rear screen from his hand held video camera, which he soon turns on the crowd so everyone can enjoy that ‘look at me, I'm on telly’ feeling.
It's the Trainspotting-featured lager-boy anthem that most are here for, and when it hits the place erupts with collective maniac dancing. But for DiS it's the sinister and vocally disturbing 'Moaner' that steals the show. It rumbles threateningly towards its tumultuous climax, before slinking off like a wounded beast seeking vengeance, and then its lair. From that scintillating high, they close with 'Jumbo'. It’s a top song, although the relaxed swaying beat seems a stunted way to end a raucous evening. But under a still moonlit summer sky and after a fine box-ticking set, Underworld were always going to win tonight.

I've always said
that 'Moaner' was the greatest track they ever recorded. When they played the Roundhouse a few months back, they played it as their encore, and it nearly took the roof off.

Has got me listening to A Hundred Days Off. Much better than I remember it. I can't believe Beaucoup Fish is 10 years old now. That album totally changed my listening habits and is one of the few that is constantly in my personal top 10 records. So, so underrated. Damn Trainspotting.
Their last two albums have been patchy
but still nobody has come close to replacing this band and what they do. The first three records are still unlike anything and anyone else...
Agree with all the above
I love Moaner. It destroyed the Roundhouse. The last 2 albums were patchy. They're still in a league of their own, even at their age.
When they played that 6 minute noise freakout from "Second toughest..." at the Roundhouse, 'Rowla', I nearly creamed my pants.
oblivion with bells is awesome..
Underworld rule
All the above is true and I'll throw in 'one of the best live bands you'll ever see' as well. Seen them a few times and they consistently blow my mind.
spot on, newport 99, got back stage to
chat to them and help drink their rider, only thing left was a can of ribena though. haha just my luck
I was there too!!
That was a truly amazing gig. They gave everything (everything) you could want from dance, electro-, live, rock or just sheer spectacle.
Also, i see in the comments mention of their last two albums; if you haven't discovered the download only, first three in the riverrun series, then make sure you do. "I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and this is my Horse" is 30 minutes of post-rave genius. Go get!
yeah the series of 12" they
did last year is ace as well Jal to Tokyo, Peggy Sussed, Playpig think there may be some more.. Back to Newport, I was with a friend who said he knew Karl and Rick, halfway through the gig he proceeded to give Karl a t-shirt from the front row, Karl slipped and did all the ligaments in his ankle (oops). Said friend got us backstage then hence the ribena story. Turns out he went to college with them in Cardiff in the 80's. It was an amazing gig..
pearls girl..
has always taken it for me. i wonder if they still play juanita/kiteless.
