my favourite is the 'don't judge them by their slightly emo name' Revenge of Shinobi, who make really good ambient yet uplifting dancey looping stuff. www.myspace.com/revengeofshinobi
Also worth mentioning:
Restlesslist
Esben and the Witch
Peter Lyons
Easy Hips
Should a fan of 4 or 5 Magicians feel the need to get their fix of them even sooner, it turns out that they're appearing at Brighton Coalition this Friday alongside another awesome Brighton band in Left Hand Red. Apparently.
Yeah, played with revenge of shinobi at the prince albert a while back. Seen some good shows by the following:
crowns on the rats orchestra
kopek
and
a scandal in bohemia
Maths Class or Easy Hips should not be mentioned in this thread.
Easy hips have some form of potential though, but not until the bassist at least figures out that if he 'rocks out' [as it were] less, then he'd play the right notes.
really impressed me when I saw them by complete chance a week or two ago, like David Byrne fronting a Nite Versions kind of thing.
Aside from that, in the past year or so I've been thoroughly enjoying the aforementioned 4 or 5 Magicians as well as Restlesslist, Turncoat and Blood Red Shoes.
kill kenada
the lucans

the Horse (Jag)

But are they Brighton based? Certainly not from there! Clearlake are a good shout, as are Brakes... Anyone else heard any Left Hand Red? Anyone been to the new ownership, revamped Freebutt lately I love Brighton, but haven't lived there for 9 years so need you guys to tell me what I'm missing...
is no-where as near as good as the old venue in my opinion and the new place seems a wee bit souless, but they put on some pretty decent shows which is really the main thing!
people should definately check them out http://www.myspace.com/midwestblues. Playing the Komedia studio bar this Saturday night with -a+m and others and its entry by dontation.
As for other bands / artists - a mention to some of the folkier lot:
Birdengine
The Diamond Familay Archive
Mary Hampton
Euchrid Eucrow
is defenately different, but i think over time will def capture the charm of the old one. and as previously mentioned they have some awesome promoters and gigs, which is of course the most important part..
are like the Zutons trying to give off the illusion that they're well arty and boho. i went having been told they sounded like Tom Waits and the Oliver! soundtrack, imagine my disappointment.
sons of noel and adrian
the miserable rich
the moulettes (well, one of them lives in Brighton at least...)
Also Mechanical Bride, and look out for Animal Magic Tricks, who has just moved to Brighton (thoough probably not just to be able to be called a 'Brighton band').
Much great stuff listed above too - let's face it, there's plenty to choose from...
Brakes
followed by Tandy Hard i reckon.
oh and a mention to Actress Hands
although they're only partly in Brighton now.
Peter Lyons

I was going to say Crowns on the Rats Orchestra.
Clearlake.
Goddamn you people.
Absolutely
Yes.
I'm slightly biased. But with good reason.
New album next spring
Incidentally.
The Maydays
They're an improvisation comedy group. But they do musical stuff at the Kommedia sometimes. Also Giles Wood - Ambient, Drumnbase that sort of thing.
.
Maths Class or Easy Hips should not be mentioned in this thread.

Alberta Cross
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
closely followed by Grinderman.

Brighton 2-3 years ago
was very prosperous ground for new bands. Recently nothing has excited me whatsoever. Or maybe it's me, getting older and miserabler..

Peggy Sue
Easy; best Brighton band in years and years.
Maths Class, Pope Joan, Lonely Ghosts, Heels Catch Fire, ...
the offcuts
*ahem*
Most of my faves have been mentioned
Floors and Walls are also pretty good.
Also not really a Brighton band, but one of my mates I go to uni with down here is in Esser, who seem to be getting pretty big. Relatively speaking.
Mean Poppa Lean are quite a good little funk band as well
Alberta Cross are amazing!
Freebutt is still good fun
but I would hardly call it revamped, just tamperd with slightly. Cheap drinks as always :D
they lost the beamish though
now it's expensive guinness :(
New Freebutt....
is no-where as near as good as the old venue in my opinion and the new place seems a wee bit souless, but they put on some pretty decent shows which is really the main thing!
Midwest Blues

The Sticks
For sure
last days of lorca
129 die in jet,

and Monsters build mean robots
are all well worth checking out!
Vile Imbeciles
awesome
May I suggest...
Le Band Extraordinaire,
Duke Raoul,
Sooks,
A Scandal in Bohemia
Yes, I have an affiliation with them, but feel that they would be neglected of exposure unless I mentioned them.
LBE
are like the Zutons trying to give off the illusion that they're well arty and boho. i went having been told they sounded like Tom Waits and the Oliver! soundtrack, imagine my disappointment.
That seems a little vindictive
and possibly quite personal?
Haha no
i can see why you'd think that, but no. i did want to like them. Or you. Whatever.
Blood Red Shoes?
The Guillotines
Bat For Lashes
arent bad
Bang Bang Bang
are pretty good too
I'd probably say the Indelicates
assuming they're still Brighton based.
i didn't even know they were based here
they're great.
I thought
they moved to Lewes so they wouldn't get called a 'Brighton band', which is a very Indelicates thing to do.
Haha
amazing.
threads like this always turn into a load of people plugging their own bands
the snarks
not really
or friends' bands...
sons of noel and adrian
the miserable rich
the moulettes (well, one of them lives in Brighton at least...)
Also Mechanical Bride, and look out for Animal Magic Tricks, who has just moved to Brighton (thoough probably not just to be able to be called a 'Brighton band').
