Formed from the remnants of several Glasgow bands of varying success, Bob Cuba have in the space of a year gone from ambitious unknowns to one of the hottest new live acts in Scotland, with their demos receiving national airplay, and the May release of their debut 6-track CD ‘Bounce’ on their own label Fusion Records already receiving favourable press reviews, including “album of the week” in The Sun.

Bob Cuba is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Stuart Stevenson who over the space of 6 years, in solo and other band projects, wrote the bulk of the material that formed their early live set. Joined by brother Colin Stevenson, a veteran of the Glasgow indie scene with several singles in his CV, Bob Cuba was born in the winter of 2001/2002 when the lineup was augmented by songwriter/DJ/bass player John Watt. Enschewing the current trend of huge-rostered indie supergroups, Bob Cuba is a welcome return to the classic power trio, with one eye trained towards the future. They write sunny atmospheric pop, with its feet heading towards the dancefloor, on themes ranging from the meaning of life to having a shower. Think of a cross between Blur and Primal Scream produced by Squarepusher, with the occassional rock anthem thrown in for good measure.

Before Bob Cuba even started gigging, an early demo recorded in Stuart's spare room captured the imagination of radio DJs from Scotland's Radio Magnetic to Arizona's KRFM, with each's respective indie shows giving Bob Cuba their first airplay. Following this, a year of non-stop gigging and rehearsing has honed this group into a tight live unit. Stuart's distinctive vocal tones and eclectic FX laden guitar lines wash over one of the best rhythm sections to grace Glasgow's live scene in a long time. Their recent demo CD, containing tracks recorded at Hyperactive, a home recording studio, and one track recorded in London's Sound Joint, so impressed Steve Lamacq that he gave it airplay on his final Evening Session Unsigned programme and selected it for Radio 1's OneMusic band competition. This CD also secured them an invitation to record a session for Northsound and feature as ‘Beatbreakers’ on Beat 106 with a week of airplay and an interview broadcast in March 2003. Their track ‘Never Let You Go’ also won them demo of the week on Radio Scotland's Air show, where they played a live session on 12th May. With their debut release, backed up by several Scottish dates, a mini-tour of Ireland and a trip to London coming up in the next few months, 2003 shows no sign of their momentum slowing.
