Wire

Wire were...

  • Colin Newman - Vocals
  • Bruce Gilbert - Vocals, Guitar
  • Graham Lewis - Vocals, Bass
  • Robert Gotobed - Drums
4 Art students with a fascination for the emerging punk scene formed Wire in 1976, and as required by all good punk bands, none knew how to play their instruments. The approached music as an experiment in art, resulting in short avant-pop songs. Their career appeared to be short when they disbanded in 1979, claiming they had exhausted their ideas. The next 6 years were filled with live material and solo project releases, and in 1986 they reformed. But by the early 90's all that remained for wire was a small cult following, and Gotobed left in 1991, fed up with his bandmates technological experimentation. In 1995 Elastica sampled Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba" in "Connection" and Newman went on to collaborate with Elastica's Justine Frischmann on a one-off project in 1997. This year Wire return, making an appearence at the Shellac curated All Tomorrows Parties 2002.
