T in a State: HOTS kicked off-stage?

Hope of the States acoustic T As the T hangovers subside, news filters in about Hope of the States playing a special acoustic show after security chucked them offstage...

Fiona McKinlay, Music Editor of Qmunicate mailed us the following report...

Hope of the States, T in the Park 2004, 11/07/04

It's nine o'clock and Hope of the States have just come off stage in the X Tent, having started their set fifteen minutes late but being forced to close it at the advertised time. After 'Goodhorsehymn', a man appeared on stage and had a word in the ear of front man, Sam Herhily, who then turned to the audience and announced, "they're pulling us, so this will be our last song." Raising his fingers in 'V's, he tells the crowd, "this isn't for you, this is for whoever's in charge." The disgruntled six piece finish their set with 'Enemies/Friends' to rapturous applause from the packed tent who had chosen to see Hope of the States over occupants of the other stages: the Pixies and N.E.R.D.

Clearly not content, Sam soon appeared outside, separated from around thirty adoring fans by a metal fence. "I'll go and get my guitar and finish the set out here," he tells them. Less than a minute passes before Herhily returns with an acoustic guitar, and band mate Michael Siddell in tow with his violin. The pair manage to play for a couple of minutes before security figure out what is happening and promptly attempt to stop Herhily and Siddell, who keep playing while walking away from baby-blue-clad security guards, further round the fence, with fans following eagerly on the other side. They finish their song and sign a few autographs before heading off, having made themselves the 'where were you?' highlight of the festival.

We're sure someone at Sony HQ will have something politely ranty to say about this later today.

jesus i wish i was there. maybe they'll be disgruntled enough to want to play leeds...in some mess of logic, this works.

Wasn't there... but witnessed their awesome performance at Glasto. Shame, however, that HOTS had to be bigged up and hyped up to fuck by their label.

If they made a more discreet arrival on the music scene there would be far less naysayers who (understandably) point out that while they are a good band with a lot of potential and some great songs they're not quite Radiohead yet.

Give em a few albums though and they could achieve something like that kind of status...

Re: T in a State: HOTS kicked off-stage?

I was there for their performance and it was short and sweet. They were on fire and then all of a sudden they said they were being pulled which sucked ass. Bloody brilliiant though, I even missed the Pixies to see them which was a shame but I think it was worth it.

Re: T in a State: HOTS kicked off-stage?

I saw the tailend of the Franz Ferdinand set, then The Thrills, sorry,a bit boring, then PJ Harvey, good,as ever, then Kings Of Leon, good, then the Pixies, great.Decided to leave then, missing the Strokes,as couldn't be bothered waiting for a bus in a queue of about 30,000 people.

I thought it was funny when I Am Kloot got the plug pulled on them during Glastonbury. Somehow, it seemed the best end to the set for them (northern dour logic, y'know). Was a decent set too :p

Damn! Knew he looked familiar!
Completely missed their set because I wanted to see the Pixies more, but headed over to the X-Tent just in time to see strange-man-with-guitar appear to give private concert.
Got a bit too freaky (and pied piper-like) though when he started striding round the fence and the assorted group of listeners all went pelting after him…
…so we left them to be rats and went and had a wee sit down (it was a long day!)

I've seen their set cut short on numerous occasions because they are such a badly organised bunch of musicians. At Leeds (or was it Glasto) 2003 'singer' sam just sat there at the keyboard and refused to move despite the roadies packing all the other stuff away when they were pulled - again because of a late start. I'm glad he's found a way to work this childish behaviour into the set. Maybe Sony should buy some decent crew for the band instead of buying ads on MTV2 only for the album to drop like a stone in the charts.

They have one of the greatest repulsion rates of any band I've seen at a festival - their crowds seem to halve during the set! I guess hype can only take you so far.

I am Kloot were pulled almost 10 mins before the printed time for their set finish so the singer had every right to be annoyed.

Re: T in a State: HOTS kicked off-stage?

well said!!! nice to know a band can be soo mature...erm NOT!!!

oh give them a break! it is sooo annoying for any band who, having worked hard to play a set, has it cut short because of bad organisation.

and it's rarely a band's fault a gig runs late, it's usually promoters not leaving enough changeover time, or technical delays, security issues etc etc...

HOTS have overcome some difficult challenges in the last year or so and anyone who has heard the Lost Riots will realise they totally deserve the attention they're now receiving.
