The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered

Oz prettyboys The Vines have pulled out of playing the Carling Weekend in Reading and Leeds. The band had already pulled out of their US tour supporting Incubus due to mental and physical health reasons. As well as this, the band feel they would not be ready to return to the stage in time for the festival. They have, as they would like to reiterate, not split up. They're really sorry and hope their fans understand the situation.
In other festival cancellation news, DiS is throwing a big girlie strop at the fact The Shins have mysteriously dropped off the radar for T In The Park, although they're still due to play Ireland's Oxegen festival that same weekend.

Slightly mean but understandable. They made a great first album and I saw them at a small gig in Bristol before it had all gotten to Craig. That night they were all very personable and I enjoyed the gig (as did a watching James Dean Bradfield). Since then, they've made a crap second album and Craig has gone from 'misunderstood genius' to just plain unpleasant. He needs to sort his head out, but the only reasons I care are because a) this about more than just music, it's about the health of a human being and b) because if they could make an album as good as the first then I'd be interested again.
And above all, "Get Free" was fantastic.

I hate the way you can't edit posts on here... I type a stream-of-consciousness rant then look back and see that I've typed a load of gibberish. Hopefully you get the gist.
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
Yep, the first album rocked, but winning days was a huge dissappointment and that singer does need a good belt in the chops
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
yeah, it is a shame that he's not in a good way mentally but then again as far as i can tell he's never been the most stable of people and i'm sure at some point someone, somewhere must have told him the stress he'd be under if he was gonna be a "star".
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
yeah i saw them in bristol a few months bak in the c hall. at that gig u must have to admit that craig was a bit weird, kicking a photorapher in the mouth etc! my email is sh1thappens_69@hotmail.com if u wana add me xxx

Furthermore - what the fuck are Incubus up to? Choosing First Brand New and now The Vines as support acts. Have they no taste these days???!!!
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
It's a case of swine before pearls, I think.
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
swine before more swine, i think.
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
Aww, Incubus aren't that bad... take away the "funky" shit of their earlier material and they're certainly miles above the hellish pit of arse occupied by the likes of Creed and Staind and Puddle Of Mudd.
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
Granted Incubus are a lot better than Creed, Staind, and Puddle Of Mudd. Problem is that this isn't exactly high praise is it? It's like saying that Bush is smarter than Jessica Simpson.
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
Incubus these dayd are tame and middle of the road although they definitely ratehiugher thatn Creed.
But it's their old funky stuff - circa SCIENCE - that actually had bollocks and a bit of an edge...

Perhaps he's having a strop because he knows that Winning Days is crap. Which is fair enough. I wouldn't want to tour a crap album.

has anyone any idea who is going to replace The Vines at Reading / Leeds?, if you look at the main stage line-up it isn't that brilliant, i don't think any of the stages have that strong a line-up this year unfortunately,
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
Friday: other stage has The Wildhearts and Soulwax: Sunday: other stage has Dogs Die In Hot Cars, The Fiery Furnaaces and The Futureheads. That'll do me nicely. Well, sort of. I've only got a day ticket for Friday.

I don't agree to be honest.
They're like Jet. Grown men with dirty hair, and cranky attitudes...
Not a Vines fan at all... Phooie. That doesn't fit my "Aus Music Rules" image at all. Damnit.

Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
They wouldn't let me take cds out until i was 18 which was a pain in the arse, it was nice when i turned 18, then i had the guts to ask Stourbridge library why they couldn't trust a sweet innocent 17 year old. Of course i didn't confront them and remain scared of the library to this very day :(

Highly Evolved was a good album
Winning Days is pretty poor in comparison
But when Craig's having a 'good' day, he's fucking amazing live!
& throwing a strop about the Shins?!
WHY WHY WHY - the Shins are absolutely awful.

i think that's slightly harsh.
It's worrying, his health I mean, poor man.
I do love the first album, but there are only a handfull of good songs on the latest one. and they do put on a good live show, from what I've seen.

well, in my opinion, they were good when I saw them, but each to his own eh.
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
I have met the vines (excepting craig nicholls), and they are cool enough guys, slightly bewildered but agreeable, and they bought me beer,so will always have at least one fan who doesnt hate them.
The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
if I buy you beer are u goin to be my fan forever?
Re: The Vines pull festival dates. Bothered
I disliked Highly Evolved so much,I got the name wrong in the earlier post. The most over rated album I've ever heard.

The Highly Evolved album is on my ipod, and i do enjoy listening to it until it gets about half way through the album. Then it gets pretty crap - 'Mary Jane' hints at being bothered again...
i just burnt my nuggets. fuck.
Yes, and so ... who gives a fuck? Nirvana did it and did it much better. We don't need Nirvana tribute bands anyway.

I have met Craig and he was really nice and lovely.

i saw them play a couple of months back and they zere amazing. Why do so many people make stupid comments on here, things like "if i could have one punch of any face it would be his."? It's just idiotic! The man's ill, just give it a rest, he's made some excellent music and I've met him and he is a really nice guy.

well said.

He's just another indie star who's burnt out after one album and now is going down the plughole. Anyone see the link below?
Pete Doherty-Craig from't Vines-Jonny Borrell?
I know people might get a bit edgy about what i just said there but it's inevitable isn't it?

Lets add Som Wardner to that list.
What a shame, bless My Vitriol, what IS going on with them?! Never really got into The Vines. We played their new one at work when it came out, I liked the first song and the rest was a bit pants sorry to say. They always seemed a little bit shouty.

This is what you get when smug, pretentious NME journalists decide to over-hype a very average band with a palpably disturbed lead singer / writer and then sit back to watch the inevitable carnage - it's called 'Create Your Own Rock Martyr' (cf. The Libertines), it's cynical and amoral beyond all fucking belief, and it stinks. The first album, once all the hysterical bluster had died down, was very ordinary indeed, with maybe one or two stand-out tracks; the band when I saw them live were abysmal with Craig Nicholls clearly already in some alternative la-la world of his own making; and it sounds as though the 2nd album marks the inevitable final crash to earth. I hope that Nicholls is alright because mental illness is pretty foul and it's not his fault. But hopefully he'll be allowed to retire into peaceful mediocrity now and deal with his demons. As for those gobshites at the NME - did anyone see that sanctimonious bullshit article the other week, tracking Nicholls' downfall whilst conveniently forgetting that the band only ever made any kind of a splash because the NME made so much noise about this 'amazing' new band from Oz, their 'zany', unpredictable lead singer, and "the best debut album ever"? - don't want that blood on your hands after all, eh guys?

I'm so dissapointed about that. I saw The Vines in May in Southampton and they were bloody fantastic, Craig was obviously having a good day and they played a spectacular show, easily the best I've ever seen. People are really overly harsh on him, he's obviously ill but people just like to take the piss out of him for being a 'nutjob' My friends met him at the show and said he was a genuinely lovely guy and he obviously just gets overwhelmed with everything surrounding him. I hope he gets better and they make another great album like 'Highly Evolved' or even just a very good album like 'Winning Days' (yes, I did think it was very good.)
Oh, and they're being replaced by Razorlight and The New York Dolls.

Razorlight and the new york dolls were to replace the Vines but who knows now that the NYD is missing one superstar.
