Morrissey: "Why become part of The Smiths?"
Posted: 06 Jun '06, 14:19
Don't be animal testin' on his watch, yo...
Morrissey - the first of the gang to die, no less - has reiterated his absolute refusal to ever reunite The Smiths.
In something of a non-story (sorry), the singer said:
"I'm not placed on the Earth to torment ex-musicians. My life is gratifying at the moment musically, so why become part of The Smiths again? What's the point? I feel as if I've worked very hard since the demise of The Smiths and the others haven't, so why hand them attention that they haven't earned? We are not friends, we don't see each other. Why on earth would we be on a stage together?"
Recent reports had revealed that he was offered money in the region of £5m to get the group back together.
DiScuss: Since we're quite obviously living in an age of reunions - see the Pixies, Take That, et cetera - would Morrissey not be wise to grab a little cash for his retirement fund?
-
that man's ego
knows no bounds.
-
This is why I love Morrissey.
Strength of character, that is.
I wonder how long it'll take him to fold. -
He's a bit of an idiot I think,
but we don't know what the rest of 'em are like.
-
He
Does seem a bit bitter.
-
It's a shame
I would absolutely *LOVE* the chance to see The Smiths, but it's not going to happen.
To say that the others haven't been doing anything isn't quite true either, they've just been doing it quietly. Johnny Marr has The Healers, and various production work. Andy Rourke has been doing charity work, and some sessioning, I think. Not sure what Mike Joyce has been up to though.
-
I <3 HIM (not the band 'HIM')
A smiths reunion would be AWFUL. I don't imagine he needs the money, so why bother? Marr's post-Smiths efforts have been nothing short of dreadful and the less said about the other two the better.
-
what was this from?
-
Ah, but just imagine
the first reunited show. They walk on and play The Queen Is Dead.
How amazing would that be? VERY.
-
this would top
john lydon going on 'i'm a celebrity'...if mozzer folded
-
Exactly!
Morrissey plays a few Smiths songs at his gigs usually, and that's enough. A tense, cynical run through of the hits by people who's chemistry is long gone would detract from their legacy if anything.
-
-
bands reforming
are like war re-enactments where no-one dies and none of it has any meaning or purpose any more.
-
Agreed
Money makes people do a lot of stupid things. As much of a twatface Morrisey can be, I'm with him on this one.
-
There
is no need for Morrissey to reform the Smiths. No need.
-
Morrissey has a point....
....even if he is a bit crap. I mean, he's more famous than the rest of the band has become, and he has worked to get where he is. He doesn't gain much from reforming with The Smiths if he's doing what he wants now.
-
that's true.
but it doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable. (i guess some people enjoy war re-enactments?).
the pixies' reunion was fantastic.
sad thing is i know i'd buy a ticket for this if it ever did happen.
I wouldn't see morrisey on tour though.-
actually it would really suck.
hmmm...
but smiths songs! played live!
:(-
however reports like this usually say
the opposite just to build up the 'excitment' - my biggest regret is that I was too young and in the countryside to see the smiths and my second biggest regret would be seeing them if they reformed - the magic is in the records and your own interpretation through your childhood - not paying £2837.87 for a ticket on ebay to have your toes stood on by someone screaming for Panic and 'that one with the bikes in the video'
still love em and Moz though
-
Ive seen Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke Dj at glastonbury one year
got excited but then i remembered they were just playing records and not re-reinventing the wheel and Marr and Moz wasn't there. yes they shuld reform no matter how brilliant it would be
-
smiths songs! played live!
Moz does plenty of them at his solo shows
-
i know
but it's not the same, because he's not the smiths.
and I don't like morrissey's solo stuff so it wouldn't be worth it.
-
-
They are very nice!
I'm sure Morrisey's the baddie.
-
so, er, where's the story today?
moz wont get back with the smiths.
we all know that, dont we?
-
would
the other Smiths get back with him? I doubt Marr would.
Morrissey wouldn't let Joyce be in the same room as him , and isn't Rourke still walking around Mancheter trying to score brown?
-
....
morrissey spilled my pint once. Oooooh i was angry.
im gunna see how many threads i can put this on before i get banned for being tedious.-
Ho hum
I saw The Smiths. They were pretty good. It wasn't the best gig I've ever been to and it certainly wasn't life changing. I'm with Mozzer. Move on, there's plenty of decent bands out there for us to go and see.

Good on you Morrissey
Reunions are pointless for the fans, the only winners are the band who cash in big-time. Fuck nostalgia, if you missed it you missed it, the world's moved on.
-
I think it's simple
and I like Morrissey (a lot)
If he was poor, he'd take the money and do it. He is not poor. He can afford to be bitter and have his resentments.
-
-
Well...
"smiths songs! played live!
Moz does plenty of them at his solo shows"
On the current tour, he does 3.
He seems to mix and match them, which whilst meaning some get played, some don't.To see The Smiths, back together, playing There Is A Light That never Goes Out would be something special.
-
As much as I love the Smiths
All these reunions have left a bitter taste in my mouth and I wouldnt want yet another nostalgic anti-climax. So a lot of us werent born early enough to see the Smiths live, its unfortunate, but at least we've got them forever on record. I think thats enough.
-
Does anyone remember..
that time the Velvet Underground reformed and were completely shite?
There's a whole heap of Moz solo stuff that is equal to his smiths output in my opinion. From "Every Day Is Like Sunday" to "First Of The Gang" and many in between.
-
-
-
Isn't it...
a good thing that he's being belligerent about this? I love bellicose popstars, not the compliant, media-friendly ones that we're presented with these days -- speaking in sounbites and knowing what their 'best side' is for photos.
Give me a popstar who challenges me, and makes me feel that something extraordinary is happening -- or in this case, something extraordinary happened...
-
analogytastic
-
being an arrogant cunt
is far more calculating 'speaking in soundbites' than just being normal.
-
-
Reunions
are so often born of greed and not love. Fair play to the grumpy old fucker. While my heart would sing to see Moz and Marr on stage together, Barbarism Begins at Home filling my mind with it's inhuman-ly amazing guitar and dog-like whelps; I'd hate it to be at the cost of their integrity.
