This is a rumour at the moment, but it may become solid fact by the close of business... Fugazi have SPLIT!

Details are sketchy, but it seems that the quartet have finally called it a day, with front man Ian MacKaye choosing to form a new band with his wife. If anyone can confirm this for us, we'd appreciate it! The word is that Fugazi "remain on hiatus and have no plans for 2004", which doesn't suggest any immediate break up, but rumours of a split are circulating quicker than SARS in the Far East. Said rumours could be rubbish of course. Here's hoping...

UPDATE!

Apparently this rumour IS rubbish, but then again, what do you expect from the gossip pages of Buddyhead? Whew. Anyway, the facts are that Fugazi are taking a break as Guy (Picciotto) has a new child, and Ian wants to concentrate on his label. They have even (reportedly) been working on new demos, suggesting that Fugazi are pretty far from breaking up.

Hope we didn't have you sweating too much. I for one am relieved.

DiScuss: Is there a better punk band of the last ten years than Fugazi?

Fugazi: Split Up?

Good Lord God, I hope not. Fugazi are the most incredible band I've seen and heard. A sense of dread nestles in my wee heart

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

HAHAHAHAHHA
GOOD RIDDANCE

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

HAHAHHA
FUCK YOU IN THE HEAD, SHITHEAD

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

Wow.Is your weener so miniscule you could fit it in his earhole. (and you prefer to shag poo, it seems)

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

YEAH! YOUR MUM LIKED IT ANYWAY

Fugazi: Split Up?

This rumour originated from Buddyhead, so take it with a pinch o' salt for now kids.

Fugazi: Split Up?

Aw Fuck. Please no. Fugazi are the best band I've ever seen live. The most difficult, precious and rare thing in the world is for a band to achieve the status of legends within their own lifetime and never let their standards fall. As a musician I wish every single kid trying to start a band could see one of their shows just to see true masters of the craft. With the likes of Prince missing from the mainstream and the likes of Fugazi maybe missing from the undergound, with Jane's Addiction gone mainstream pay-the-mortgage-rock .... I should at this point drop to my knees and pray that nothing happens to Queen Adreena and Nine Inch Nails or the torchbearers will all have fallen. (Shit... I think the Lord Of The Rings has infected my speech... ha ha... thus may fall a mighty citadel, the fair Jewel of DiSchord)

Fugazi: Split Up?

Man I loved fugazi.

Never liked Ian's spouting forth about the evils of drink and drugs though.

I feel they were releasing poor records after red medicine anyway. So may be for the best, if it is indeed true.

In on the Kill Taker is such a classic.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

fuck?
you think kill taker is better than end hits and the argument?
fool

Fugazi: Split Up?

Its been a long time since they were relevent. Let "The Argument" be it. I'll be happy.

Fugazi: Split Up?

er... hello? fugazi have openly stated they're on indefinite hiatus since the UK tour of 2002. MacKaye's band is called Evens and they've a song online on an anti-war site called 'on the face of it' which is rather good indeed.
recently guy emailed to say the future doesnt look good for the band cos brendan doesnt want to leave his family for extended periods anymore. so while nothing is definite or probably ever will with regards the end of fugazi, the chances of a new record or tour are extremely remote.

Fugazi: Split Up?

"The word is that Fugazi "remain on hiatus and have no plans for 2004", "

which would mean that they are taking a year out to concentrate on other things. since when has fugazi been a full time band in the last years anyway?

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

Rumours is rumours.
I hope they've not called it a day.
But if they have, so be it. They've families now, and they should wind down.
I think they've done all they can without retreading themselves.

Fugazi: Split Up?

The question should be, were there *any other* punk bands in the last ten years? I can think of maybe two...

Anyway, I seriously hope this is just a rumour. Fugazi were easily the greatest guitar band of the 90s, and 'The Argument' was as relevant as anything they've ever done.

And if it's not a rumour, well, fair play to 'em. They never burned out, they didn't fade away.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

I thought they were hitting new strengths with The Argument. They had managed to evolve from the days of Repeater without losing -any- of their edge. I rated it as their best work. If they split... meh... i'll be totally irreversably saddened.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

"The question should be, were there *any other* punk bands in the last ten years?"

er yeah, shitloads.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

were any of 'em better though? really?

Fugazi: Split Up?

with a wife?
i could never imagine ian mackaye in any sexual situation

Ewwww

but on a side note

FUCK

Fugazi: Split Up?

Sars? Was that really necessarry? Lol.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up?

you know it comes from eating cats...

SARS that is.

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

ian sounds like a drunken sailor. gotta love it.

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

Perhaps DiS should check rumours before they put it out as fact.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

It wasn't posted as a fact. It was written as a rumour (a very newsworthy rumour!), appealing for clarification, which we later got.

Still, has made for a good talking point, no?

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

I WOULD TRUST AN ARTICLE BY THE SUN OVER DIS ANYDAY.

Re: Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

It's such a shame that you include the name of such a fine band in your "Posted by" section but that you come across as such a silly, silly cunt. Why not next time sign in your name as just that. You silly, silly cunt.

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

statement we got from guy last month now up at www.tastemusic.co.uk:

Well, the truth of the matter is that as of this year Fugazi has actually entered a period of hibernation after 16 years of uninterrupted work. Basically, our drummer has a family of 3 kids and he needs to take a break from the level of working that Fugazi has always represented for us. Eventually we may certainly play again but for the moment we are all just doing other projects. As for our friendship and our relationship to music in general, those are things that are life long connections and are independent of whatever state the band itself is in.

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

What makes me really laugh is that twat with "idlewild" in his username. If Fugazi didnt exist, then Idlewild certainly wouldn't. But I guess on the plus side neither would Sparta...

I really really really want to see Fugazi live.

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

We can all speculate this and that. Yeah, it's a bitch that
they haven't played in my neck of the woods (nyc) in four
years!!! But for crying out loud, the drummer has three
kids!!! And he's a touring musican in a self-reliant and self-sufficient anti-commercial rock band.

Guy has a son? I thought only Brendan and Joe had families...

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

its been a long time since they were relevent? thats the dumbest thing i have ever heard. the lyrics to the argument are nothing short of prophetic, discussing things like public disclosure of financial documents (umm enron? what?) and impending decline of american democracy into right wing fanatisism and fachism. plus it was the most impressive record (musically) theyd released since their early days. people who think this way should not be allowed to listen to music or process thoughts. whether they call it a day or not you cannot challenge the status of Fugazi as the undisputed most important underground band ever. the reason the indie scene is even around is because of them. they supported it as it was being made, and invented the rules on how to do everything independently and with integrity. yeah yeah i know, there are other independent labels out there. but you never hear bands from dischord complaining that they didnt get paid on time or bolting for majors.

Fugazi: Split Up? Apparently Not!

Word! :P

I knew about Fugazi for a few years now, but I only recently discovered it. And I love them! They rule. You can hear the influence of their earlier record in 'new' bands.

It's great they stuck to their ideals and didn't sell out. Another thing I like about them is that they're not afraid to try new things and innovate. Look at the argument, not exactly a standard punk record. (neither of their records are)

Although I think they have a well deserved break, I hope they're gonna tour again soon and they also play in the Netherlands. That would be sooooooooooooooo great :D (keepin my fingers crossed)

grtz, Ralph Lindsen
the Netherlands

PS Does anyone know where I can find the guitartabs for 'Epic Problem'? Thnx in advance

"but you never hear bands from dischord complaining that they didnt get paid on time or bolting for majors."

err, can you say shudder to think and jawbox, both went to majors.
