However, what makes this remotely interesting is the news that his replacement, at the stinking great crud-fest that the band's Cardiff Millennium Stadium support date with Feeder and Stereophonics undoubtedly promises to be, will be Gary Mountfield.
Mani.
That's Mani, bassist from insurrectionary genre-hopping sleaze-rockers Primal Scream. Mani from messianic jangle-swagger indie-Gods, them Stone Roses.
Mani, it can only be assumed, is being sent on some sort of aversion theraphy by Gillespie and the others, in case he gets slack and does something like Second Coming again.
Why else would an ice-cool genius, the backbone of two of the greatest bands of all time be moonlighting with Ocean Colour Scene?
The suggested reason for his departure is that Damon wants to concentrate on being a Dad rather than a Dadrockstar, and presumably feels that he has achieved all he can with OCS.
DiScuss: Is Mani off his rocker? Does wearing some ropey sweater from Merc make you a mod these days, then? Are you going to the gig? Why?
Primal Scene: Mani joins OCS!
Didn't you hear - the NME have dropped their sanctions against The Second Coming now, it's ok and cool to like it, and appreciate the album for the majesty that it is.
Re: Primal Scene: Mani joins OCS!
About half of Second Coming is pretty decent, I grant you, but about half is utter wank.
Much as you can admire OCS's sustained popularity through gruelling touring in the face of media disinterest, they are kinda crap, though they probably don't deserve their fate as Dad rock whipping boys for lazy music journos. I, however, was just bamboozled that an impeccable chap like Mani should leap at the chance to play with a band whose output has been patchy at best, some agreeable pub-boogie, but a lot of dreary dross...
Why do people who claim to hate the NME always reference it? I couldn't tell you what the NME's opinion on Second Coming or any other album is, coz I never buy it any more, coz they never put any artists who particularly interest me on the cover. Just. Say. No. It's that simple...
Re: Primal Scene: Mani joins OCS!
I've just always had a bee in my bonnet about The Second Coming, cos I've just always believed it's one of the best rock albums of all time. But then again I love Led Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses a lot more than The Smiths. I guess it just makes me feel old! (I'm 28)
I agree about OCS tho. They had potential to be semi-decent but always blew it.
I didn't claim to hate the NME. I don't claim to like it, either. In fact, I can't see that it has any relevance to anything beyond functioning as an arduous cattle market for bass players and keyboardists (which is all I use it for).
Re: Primal Scene: Mani joins OCS!
The Second Coming is a laborous, laborous album.

"Leave them kids alone!"
Re: Primal Scene: Mani joins OCS!
Since writing this article I've been humming 'The Day We Caught The Train' incessantly.
This frightning lapse into nostalgia came to a head when I found myself playing the Riverboat Song riff over and over again on my guitar and even trying to figure out the widdly bit at the end.
Time for some Trout Mask Replica methinks...

C'mon, parts of the Second Coming are fantastic. I'd take Begging You over House of Jealous Lovers anyday. Obviously Mani's just gone crazy.

ps Second Coming was monkey jism
Primal Scene: Mani joins OCS!
but surely this isn't permanent??!??! I'm finally seeing the scream for the first time in january - he'd better be there! it was undoubtedly mani's bass and kevin shields' amazing guitar that made xtrmntr one of truly great albums in recent years.
