two totally different guitarists, but similar in other ways. buck= simple, marr= quite intricate but not always the same live. love both, both play a rickenbacker. any commments on these two?

too different to compare

both totally awesome

johnny marr

is more dynamic and forceful, than peter buck, who is simple and subtle. i prefer buck, but that's probably because i prefer REM.
i can see the similarities between the two, this thread isn't dead yet...

good work

marr.

but only smiths era marr.

Buck's

playing was at its best in the 80's but songs like drive and texarkana from out of time etc are his best. the over production ruined there last 3 albums, although the album Up is surprisingly really good if you give it a good listen.

Marr

can Buck dance like this?

MMMM...

...funky.

!!!!!!

You've actually made me want to listen to The Smiths. Not many things have done that over the years...

when I think of totally unique, gifted, killer guitarists: I dont't ever think Peter Buck

ButJohnny Marr always cones to mind. That is the difference. Johnny is a God, Peter ain't. Love Peter Buck though.

Buck ftw

Purely on his ability to fuck shit up on airplanes.

Johnny Marr - nuff said

it's about Johnny Marr. Peter Buck is good but no was as innovative as Johnny Marr. Not even half as much. Sorry.

REM were often dubbed the American Smiths in the early days (despite preceding them) because of the similarities in the guitar sound. I'm no guitarist but I think Buck plays more with his right hand and Marr with his left (chords and whatnot). I can't remember who it was who said Peter Buck has the best right hand in rock? Anyway, I love them both as I love both bands and the lovely jangly rickenbacker Byrds-ish sounds they make. My own personal favourite examples of these two guitarists' prowess would be 'Imitation of Life' by Buck and the Talking Heads track '(Nothing) But Flowers' by Marr. Or 'This Night has Opened my Eyes' if we're looking for a Smiths track.

is marr not playing with rem now

last week
somewhere

I am thinking of forming a band with him

in february
