Is the rest of the new Death Cab for Cutie album...

as good as I Will Possess Your Heart?

I fell out of love with them after Plans. But this song is lovely. It's ambitious, a bit different and still pretty beautiful...

  • not really

    but its still ok

    • the first 2 songs are the best IMO

      • first 2 songs

+cath and long division - that's all you need. i think plans is the better album (even though the production is way too glossy)

        • Cath

          is infectious!

        • Yeah I can't stand

perfectionist producers. Chris Walla should stick to playing guitar

          • hmm

i like some of the production on plans. i like the touches and flouries he adds. everyone else seems to hate it.

and yeh get narrow stairs, loads of great songs, you can do better and the ice is getting thinner par example.

  • its good

but none if it really stands out like I will possess your heart does. you should def buy it though

  • sadly not

but the Postal Service album is, kinda.

You're better off trying the new record from Styrofoam or maybe even Shearwater or I Was a Cub Scout of that's what floats your boat.

    • Gonna buck the trend and say

yes. It's a bloody fantastic album beginning to end.

      • unfortunately

it;s not as good which is a shame. but it ain't bad either.

    • Nah it doesn't

Death Cab are a bit of an anomaly in my music taste.

  • I'm not keen on the new album and I really don't get the appeal for I Will Possess Your Heart.

Just a very boring build up that doesn't really lead to anything special.

  • I still haven't heard the proper version of this album

just the weird German band who put their album onto torrenting sites and labelled it DCFC...

  • To keep it short and simple:

    No.

I listened through the album once and never touched it again, it was just plain boring, the songs didn't go anywhere. Whatever happened to the days when they made catchy, upbeat power-pop?

    • i don't remember those days

perhaps you could suggest an album?

      • Listen to

        - You Can Play These Songs with Chords
        - Something About Airplanes

Not everything on them is upbeat obviously, but the production isn't overdone and all of the songs are a heck of a lot more interesting than the ones on Plans/Narrow Stairs.

        • try again; spot the sarcasm

i have both of those LPs and i really don't see any way in which they can be described as "upbeat power-pop".

also, Something About Airplanes is RUBBISH.

          • Then what would you describe it as?

And why is Something About Airplanes rubbish?

AND JUST WHAT of Death Cab do you like anyway?

            • i like how

they put a lot of effort into their records, into making them feel like complete entities rather than a collection of songs. i love the way gibbard writes lyrics, and the way he delivers them as well. i love the way he writes about life, and usually with just a twinge of sadness. i like walla's production (for the most part), because it's expansive and interesting and seems to mesh really well with the tone of the songs. i love that they have a lot of soul.

i don't like Something About Airplanes because it's a cheap little record full of obstuse, try hard lyrics. death cab have been one of my favourite bands for six years now and that album has never done anything for me.

thankfully they killed from Facts to Transatlanticism. Plans isn't very good, but it was a major label debut and i think they were just trying too hard. Narrow Stairs corrects this mistake.

to be honest though, i'm not likely to take your opinion on the record that seriously as you've said you've only listened to it once and i never really bother with knee jerk reactions in either direction.

              • You're right

I shouldn't have bothered posting, listening to the album once doesn't really give me a valid opinion. Still, I'm not terribly interested in listening to it again.

I guess we both agree that Plans isn't good though.

Sorry about the heated response, no hard feelings.

              • guntrip

                i love you

        • even as a huge death cab fan

i'd recommend everyone staying away from YCPTSWC and something about airplanes - they are crap.

          • heh

with me, it's not even because i dislike the cheap production. i love the all time quarterback album!!

  • it's fucking brilliant

i started a thread about it last week. basically, it flows along effortlessly, the production sounds brilliant, has loads of charm, i'm pretty much in love with it.

also at latitude they sandwiched soul meets body in between cath... and transatlanticism and it really showed how awful a song it is :D

  • Grapevine Fires

    Anyone?

    • this song is so

achingly beautiful. it was instantly my favourie when i first heard it. i think maybe cath has taken over on repeated listening, but grapevine fires is so so so so beautiful.

      • In terms of beautiful DCFC songs

see also: Styrofoam Plates. Did someone say they played it live last week? May have to track this down on YouTube...

        • Last thursday

Brixton Academy. They did indeed play it live. Such a rarity for them to play it live and was every bit as beautiful as i dreamt it would be...did a little dance, then a little cry.. perfection

          • The way McGerr

has evolved that drum part in the middle of 'Styrofoam Plates'into some kind of rock god drum solo was astounding to see.

  • After seeing them last week

..the difference between the older songs, even plans, and the songs they played from narrow stairs was startling.. really made you realise how they have progressed as a band. That's not to say their older work doesn't sound good live, but the production on narrow stairs really comes through.

It's fair to say Narrow Stairs isn't as immeadiately striking as many of their previous outings but don't judge until you have seen it live, because it is quite simply breathtaking.

  • I would just like to do a massive show off on this thread

and let you know that I spoke at length with (read: jibbered like a teenage girl at) Death Cab backstage at Latitude. My 15 year old self died and went to heaven. And I like Narrow Stairs.

    • I love

Airplanes. 'Your Bruise', 'Bend To Squares', 'Amputations', 'Line of Best Fit' - all fucking brilliant songs. Very different band then to the band they've become now but no less great.

To the guy whose only heard NS once - it defo takes a few listens but, trust me, when it hits it hits.

  • Kinda, yeah

    MUCH better than Plans anyway.

    • I hate this abiding Plans bashing...

Let's not forget 'What Sarah Said.' That song destroys me to this day.

    • I really like this...

...album. It's the first one I've really got into since TransAtlanticism.
