I remember when i didnt want biffy becoming 3 slags adored by the press, starting to happen now..... i still admire them for their first few albums, but found myself turning over at new tunes on glastonbury. anyone feel the same?

Ah AM ahh MOunntunnn
I've never thought they were good
Only have 3 good songs, all of which are from their first two albums
puzzle was awful
and i didnt think much of the one before that either, for me they lost it after the first 2 albums. i havnt bothered with them for a long time
i agree with this man above,
First two albums were great. third was patchy (and thats being kind), fourth was downloaded, listened to once, deleted. Shame, always thought they were a good inventive band. Now they're really really boring.
That Mountain song is awful.
'Puzzle' was standard American MOR radio rock, at best.
They've lost everything that used to excite me about them.
In short, my interest has faded to the point that I couldn't really care less about them any more...which is a shame.
PUZZLE
infinity land+seriously amazing album, very diverse. puzzle- what the fuck. i understand the change of direction, but its like a step back which seems bizzare considering they neveer seemed to do that on an album
yeah infinity land is a really good lp
probably my favourite of theirs so i'm suprised people don't like it. puzzle was shit. not a fan of their first album either. it's all about vertigo and infinity
"I'm a fire...
and I burn, burn, burn tonight."
LoL. Oh, puuuurlease
I love Biffy
the last album was different but not a bad album at all, imo if a band wants logevity they need to reinvent themselves slightly from time to time while still keeping the core sound they have always had. I think biffy have done this without selling out at all. Added to that they are still the same great band live they have always been and that ultlmately where i shall always judge them and any band.
i mostly like all of their stuff equally
but this is probably due to me getting into them relatively late and not having the attachment to the earlier albums
...
Ah Biffy...
They should cut their respective hair and get jobs.
Biffy never had it.
"I used to be with 'it'. Then they changed what 'it' was. Now what was 'it', isn't 'it', and what is 'it' seems new and scary to me."
^
nice reference grand pa
i would say
their creative peak was vertigo of bliss. i think that album is fantastic in parts, namely the bookend tracks.
some of their early songs are very good but verged close to the mor american rock that is now leaping out of the speakers with puzzle.
they've slogged it out for years, if they want to release less ambitious music to enjoy a bit of success, then all power to them i say. i don't think puzzle was a massive shift for them, to me, it sounds like slightly less imaginative versions of their early songs with major label production slapped on it.
AGREE
vertigo was the high point.
I liked their first three albums
Specifically their first two.
Then they became Diet Foo Fighters
oh for fucks sake
Never got them.
I like listening to their ealier albums but don't find them compulsive listening.
It pains me to say it
but, yes, they have.
And that's not because i'm some jealous old fan, or however that bullshit argument goes, it's because they've diluted what used to excite me so much to the point of indifference / mild annoyance.
definately
its actually a real shame
they're awesome
good bands always move on and change their sound. some try and write more eperimental songs. some try and write more mainstream sounding songs.
it happens. please deal with this.
^^^ This
Can i counter that argument with
Soundgarden? Found massive commercial success yet managed to maintain artistic credability on the follow up record, Down On The Upside. Which rocks face.
If you are
suggesting Biffy have lost credability i have to disagree
They've lost all credibility
They went from writing interesting songs to writing diluted FM rock. How do they have any credibility left?
They've
gone from writing interesting songs to diluted FM rock in your opinion. Ok the singles are mainstream but biffy have always had that side to them. The album as a whole was different but each album has been different to the last.
What exactly makes you the judge of what is credible or not? they have lost no credabilty, just a few fickle fans.
*Their original fan base
Each album has been *slightly* different but there were things that linked them together - interesting time signatures, messing with song structure.
Then they decided to make tedious, straight laced verse chorus generic rock tracks and if you think it's anything other you're deluding yourself. They used to be seen as a band who enjoyed being different. Now they're exactly like everybody else. If that isn't losing credibility I don't know what is frankly.
But whatever you're that prick who lost it when I dared to criticise his precious Newcastle so I imagine it's the same thing here.
Ok, first off i'm not a prick
and seriously doubt you would say that to my face, it's ok though keep hiding behind your computer. second of all i can't even remember what the conversation was about but i can guarantee i didn't lose it. I probably just put across i different opinion to yours and put arguments to back it up, similar to what i am doing now. I can also guarantee i didn't go as low as to start calling you names. I may be passionate but i won't apologise for that.
finally please do not patrionise me about biffy i have seen them 13 times at least and have supported them from the beginning watching them in tiny venues with a dozen other people at the most. i am not trying to say i know all or anything, moreover that i am not a new fan that just discovered them when puzzle came out. You seem to have this idea that your opinion is fact. you think it is tedious - many don't. As i mentioned before the singles may be mainstream but have you listened to the album?? All of the songs are not verse chorus verse chorus format. Biffy have been one of the most hardworking bands in the country for the last 5 years, they are now getting abit of success, which they deserve. Anyway i am tired of arguing now so we may aswell just agree to disagree. I am going to go wank over my Alan shearer DVD while listening to the new Biffy single.
good call
.
oh crap,
I meant 'good call' to the comment earlier about soundgarden. I can't believe it added my reply after this nutbar above.
although,
alan shearer is total sex...
Get fucked
we are dealing it with it
by expressing our discontent
Ok then,
accept it.
Duh
pretty much
broke late, fast burnout, return to small gigs attended by relatively few fans
your covering some well trodden ground here azmckay
with these biffy/mansun/mew threads, all you need now is a Bon Iver, Okkervill River/Johnny Flyn thread and all the DiS staple artists will have been covered
i wish mew were a DiS staple
Biffy are great.
Just see them live and you'll know they haven't lost it. Puzzle was great but too often derided by the usual cluster of snivelling indie-lings as being 'too commercial', just because it was well-produced catchy pop as opposed to the usual 10-song-ideas-glued-together-songathon.
Don't like them any more? GET OVER IT AND WHINGE ABOUT SOME OTHER BAND FFS!!!
You feel strongly then ?
I've calmed down now
all that caps lock ranting left me puffing and wheezing :)
I actually really though Puzzle was a brilliant album
sad to see the typical musical snobbery prevail on this site when they perception is they have gone mainstream when they used to be "my band" and it was "me and five people only" who used to like them. Grow up. or go and listen to The Fuck Buttons or Neutral Milk Hotel.
....
Ok seriously though. Puzzle wasn't good, regardless how big it got them, it literally wasn't good. It seems like they were told "DO THIS TO GET BIG GUYS", and well, well done, bravo it worked.
The three previous albums as we all know were amazing, too amazing and that is why Puzzle sounds like such utter wank comparably. So now they have gone, will never be back and all the TRUE biffy fans can do - and i say TRUE in the most unpretentious way - is to move on, stick blackened sky on and rock out.
oh what the fuck
biffy have always been catchy.puzzle was basically whole songs of catchy bits that biffy hsave been playing for years.i m not going to say its better than the first 3 albums cos it blatantly isnt but it is certainly NOT shit.
ok thats your opinion which is fair enough
but it doesn't make you right. Now gold star for you for being such a fanboy and bad us for liking Puzzle. We are not as cool or as worthy as you oh music geek.
sorry that was for BradK
ta.
i know it was :)
I am True yes TRUE
so what do I do?? Carry on loving them the same way i always have without judgement?
Ok then. thanks for your guidence.
with pleasure
For me, Puzzle's not the issue
It was disconcerting - but a fine major label debut for a band with some shit to get off their chest.
I thought this stop-gap single would be specifically to say "HEY GUYS, WE'RE STILL GREAT" though - so was double dissapointed when it was pure shit.
Not MOR catchy stuff I can live with like Saturday Superhouse, but just a nothing. Horrible, cheesy, contrived lyrics. Gross production, no balls and a piano tacked on in the studio.
P.S. Because Simon obv can't scream on the new stuff, he does this horrible croaky-whiney thing to 'rawk it up' which never happened before and makes my ears bleed.
*sighs*
I'm not trying to be a "fanboy" and shun people who like Puzzle but its like, the majority know that Puzzle - compared to the previous 3 - is terrible.
They upped the production to sound cleaner, brought in orchestral backings to sound more epic and took every ounce of screaming and anger out of their songs to allow them more mainstream interest. Its fact.
The culmination of all of that pisses off older Biffy fans. So NO, i'm not sucking thier bums, i'm venting the anger that one band can do so right and then, for money and fame, go SO WRONG.
Personally they did the whole "get big quick" thing wrong and thats why Puzzle sounds so shit on principle as well as having weak songs littered throughout.
never really liked them
tbh
I love them, always have
I don't have a problem with the new stuff, although the production is maybe a bit too polished for my liking, but I think the songs are great.
You'd think they'd gone from this brilliant experimental noise band into singing smash hits the way people go on about them. They've always been a pop band, always had pop moments and big choruses, they just get more success now.
Although, if you see them live, Simon screams a lot more on the new stuff than on record, and it is better.
i love biffy a lot
but mountains is fukin wack.
Yes but these new songs aren't good pop
it's just...well, shit. It's not the lack of screaming at all.
I think they do a damn fine job
of being different pop...'Living Is A Problem' is not your average rock song is it?
I can't believe some people are calling 'Puzzle' awaful. It's not awful, it's just not as good as the earlier stuff. I mean, they don't sound like the fucking Ting Tings do they.
no
end.
Biffy never had it in the first place
^ probably hasn't listened to the vertigo of bliss
WELL SAID ^
that album is just so fucking good...
*definately
puzzle is good
it is by far a more commercial album and it is too over produced but still has quite a lot of good songs
and am i the only person who likes mountains?
lyrics
simons lyrics have changed which is fine and he does it well, BUT for older fans his lyrics still had a degree of mystery (at times)... they just dont sound that interesting any more..
no you're not
I really like Mountains.
Biffy are the perfect band for me....
Am I in the mood for spazzy, screamy weirdness rock music? YES! I put on TVOB or Infinity Land.
Am I in the mood for big verse/chorus sing along pop rock? YES! I put on Blackened Sky or Puzzle.
END.
^^^^This
Nail. Head.
That ^^
Too.Wrong.
Blackened Sky, "Pop". Hold the FUCK up...
Puzzle is
still a pretty great album, but the production is horrible (especially the canning of the rumbling bass for Who's Got A Match, and the overuse of compression)
It IS much more poppy, with less peculiar time signatures / insane bits. Hopefully on next album they'll bring back the experimentation. Infinity Land's an incredible but very messy album - that combined with Puzzle's pop nous would be superb.
And while stuff like Saturday Superhouse / Conversation Is... may have Foos comparisons, when was the last time Dave Grohl wrote a song remotely like 9/15ths, Get Fucked Stud or Living is a Problem?
Christ
the bit from 'Living' that people seem to think makes it 'dofferent' is a fucking orchestra isn't it? Same with 9/15ths. It's just cloyingly normal pop-rock with some strings wrapped round it.
*different
but 'dofferent' should be the genre of their next album.
