I'm listening to Pavement for the first time

Slanted & Enchanted. I'm going to document it, a la LLB.

Wow, Summer Babe is totally amazing. I love this song already. I want to play it again. Don't end! No!

  • ^ quick, your indie points are running away.

  • wait to you get to 'here'

though Zurich is Stained is my fave

  • summer babe is the best

it goes a bit downhill from there.

  • Trigger Cut/Wounded Kite At 0:17

Stupidly weird name. Pretty cool guitars. His voice and the vocals don't work though. Still, nice feedbacky solos.

    • this is probably my favourite song on that album

i dont really like pavement that much though

      • The 2cd version of this album

has the full actual song version of that end bit (wounded kite?) on it. Plus all of the b-sides etc are ace. And it has the Watery Domestic EP on it too which is also spectacularly good. Normally reissues are a bit lame but the Slanted & Enchanted one is actually worth getting!11

        • I saw it for £7

I'm gonna buy it next week.

        • oh cool i might look for that

are the other pavement box reissue things any good, ive always wanted to like pavement a bit more than i actually do, but i thought that it was just one of those things, then i saw footage of malkmus doing pavement songs and it was pretty good so i've been wanting to try again...

          • I have the Crooked Rain one

but I only ever listen to the actual album bit of it. I think the old version without the bonus crap will probably be cheaper and it doesn't sound any worse or anything.

  • No Life Singed Her

Pretty great. I love the bass, and the scratchy solos. Better vox too. This could be a good album.

  • In The Mouth of A Desert:

Awesome! He sounds well emo. Like Jeremy Enigk! I like when he sings along to the guitar line.

  • Conduit For Sale!

There's a bit too much going on here at certain points. The badababs don't do it for me. I like the screamed refrain though. They are reminding me of Rites of Spring bizarrely.

This thread isn't as good as lordluciousbanter's original

    • you need douchebag to start talking about how pavement

are everything thats wrong with music today, then itd be better

      • You know how Nirvana killed off hair metal?

Pavement killed off jazz funk. And that's why he's mad.

        • I'm crying with laughter at the image of Malkmus playing slap bass now

          Thanks.

          • I reckon

he could do with a bit of the ol' wet fish slap bass sound to liven up his new solo stuff if Face The Truth is anything to go by :(

  • Zurich Is Stained

Erm, bit pointless. Nothing really happened. Just sounded a bit rubbish.

  • Chesley's Little Wrists

Wow, noisy. Doesn't seem to have any real point. I like noise, but this just seems lacking in passion or something. It's juts 'there'.

  • Loretta's Scars

It's starting to blend into one. I liked this, but I couldn't tell you how it sounded exactly.

  • Here

I liked this. Variety. Pretty soulful. I was starting to get a little bored of the formula, so this is a welcome interlude.

    • Actually, this was really lovely.

Another one to come back to.

  • Two States

yeah, I liked this. Galloping drums, interesting rhythm and fx, good vocals.

    Another listen again.

  • Perfume V

I liked this, but it's a little too nothingy, like ooh how clever and minimal we are or something. I think it suffers by coming after the two awesome songs before it.

  • Fame Throwa

    Pretty pretty pretty good.

  • Jackals, False Grails: The Lonesome Era

Wtf with the weird song titles. Is it to be indie? Bit boring this song. It's like the other ones, just not as standoutish as the great tracks.

  • Our Singer

Quiet, nice fadeout. Pretty mournful/hopeful. Ok.

  • Overall Verdict

I like it, certainly. I don't think it's that great on first listen though, but apparently time is needed to make it click. There was enough stuff there to make me intrigued enough to go back though. It sounds a lot like Sonic Youth/Neil Young & Crazy Horse/Built To Spill who are all bands I love, but it seemed to lack a bit of the special passion which makes me love those bands so.

A bit too shambolic and disaffected for its own good sometimes.

    A 6.5/7 out of 10

Favourite Track: Two States or Summer Babe

  • The other albums are better

    In my opinion

    • Agreed

Summer babe makes up for it though on S+E.

  • i dont really understand the hype surrounding slanted and enchanted.

it might be because im not old enough to appreciate what that record did for the underground music scene or whatever, but still, it doesn't appeal to me too much.

i think crooked rain is perfect though.
you really should listen to that next.

  • I accuse you of 'faking' this thread

  • Best album ever

    Maybe.

    • alien lanes is way better than slanted and enchanted, huh

      • ^ unfunny

        • nah man

its one of those 'its funny coz its true' jokes

          • I much much prefer...

Crooked Rain. Slanted...is great in places, especially the first two tracks; but its also a fair few pointless nothing tracks eg. Conduit For Sale, Fame Throwa.

            • I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING

              I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYING, I'M TRYIIIIIIIIIIIING. Not pointless.

  • Slanted and Enchanted

Is the only Pavement album I don't have. Is that wrong?

  • They played Pavement on Top Gear last night.

I reckon with that kind of push the reunion shows would be a huge success.

  • Thanks for picking up on my greatest ever thread pal!

I hoped these would become regular things, so I'd love to see more of them
