I've found that I'm becoming more tolerant of people recently; do you think it's a sign of growing up? What are your feelings on this, do you still dislike the majority of the human race?
I thought it would be an appropriate question to ask the users on here; "indie kids" often feel compartmentalized in society and therefore either don't understand the ideals of the mainstream, or simply don't have any desire to associate themselves with certain groups. Although I still hold these views and am likely to always be a misanthropist to an extent at least, I think the time has come where I should show more credence; people aren't going to change, I can only alter the way I view others.

P.S. I’m 21 years of age. (It would probably be helpful if you could tell me your age)

How do you view other people in society and how have your opinions progressed as you’ve matured?

  • i'm 20.

i hate more and more people as i get older.

  • 20

I dislike a lot of human characteristics, but at the same time it's rare I meet someone I don't get on with or have a problem being around. So no, I certainly wouldn't say I dislike people.

  • i'm nearly 23 and get on with as many people as i always have.

I can tolerate alot of people, yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean i like them.

I'm an exceptionally sociable person and tend to get along - to some extent - with the majority of people i meet; i even manage small-talk with my peasantry colleagues.

However, if i take a disliking to someone, i just tend not to converse with them...this happens rarely, but does occasionally prop its head

    • Yeah

you can tolerate people even if you don't like them, I'm getting better at this. Although if you are forced to spend to much time with them then it's much more difficult.

  • I'm 31

and I'm finding I'm getting a lot less tolerant as I get older. The slightest thing sends me into a blood boiling rage, like walking through town and people walking into you. Am I invisible? And pushing a trolley round a supermarket is no fun at all, especially when the isles are full of little old people. Don't get me started on kids!!

  • I'm 27 and I'm getting less

tolerant of stupid things, particularly on television. Like male anti ageing cream adverts, or Nadine Baggert talking about pentapeptides, or T4, or Eastenders etc.

    • Although with actual people

I've always been pretty tolerant on the whole. I'm not getting less so. Not yet.

      • Yes

things on T.V do irritate me more than things IRL. Those commercials advertising products with new-fangled formulae that are supposed to make you healthier. Most of them do next to nothing in reality, they'll only contradict themselves when they discover something else. So yeah, I hate them aswell.

  • i used to be ok

then i started spending time here

  • I'm 27

and as I get nearer to 30, I do find myself becoming more tolerant of people. I guess I have just learnt to bite my tongue a bit more. I still think a fool is a fool, but I just know when not to say it out loud now.

  • 29

Some things I'm less tolerant about and others more tolerant about.

    Cheers

    • 30

And i'd like to echo Jack_El_Biscuits sentiments!

  • 22

and no, quite the opposite. Though I think living in London and using the Tube on a regular basis, surrounded by people whose main purpose is apparently to do my head in, has made me less tolerant and patient with people rather than my advancing years.

  • Im 27 now

i use to be quite angry and want to change the world alot now ive sort of hidden from the things i dont like so am not as angry. i.e dont really watch tv. dont go to pubs. Work issolated with semi smart people. etc.

I wouldnt say ive grown more tollerant thou, i just have found ways to shut those people and things out.

  • im 20

i get on with everyone i meet pretty much.i put up with thewm at least cos i dont like conflict

  • 26

and halfway towards Hitler, trust me.

  • Both yes and no

I'm 26 and I think nowadays I think I'm a lot clearer on the things I will and won't tolerate.

I probably am a lot less likely to get annoyed about petty stuff but place more value on respect and human decency (and probably more significantly more value on myself). So I'm probably more tolerant of views and opinions different to mine but less likely to take shit from other people.

  • na

there are just more cunts around now than when i was a nipper.

  • I should clarify that I still don't like people

I'm just becoming slightly more tolerant.

  • Hello I'm Pieter, I'm 30 and I'm a raging misanthropist

It's been 3 months since I last cracked a smile.

  • more tolerant

apart from a small group who i realise that you could spend all your time catering for and would then end up neglecting most others

  • On the whole it's a varied response

depends on the individual and their life experiences/attitudes I guess.

  • nearly 23

i go through phases of rage, but mostly im chilled. I used to be untouchable when i was younger, everything was awesome, but now i despise a LOT of stuff, and most people.

a stranger is not a friend you havent met, its a cunt you havent found a reason to hate yet

    • your last point

is a very negative way of thinking although i know i'm guilty of it on occasion.

      • indeed it is

ive just been put in a very bad mood tho. Ive been organising a friends only trip to newquay for the past few months and were going latr today. I just got a text from the person i least wanted to come saying "my 3 mates are coming"
        FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!
your 3 mates are cunts! ive met them before and they were cunts. now its ruined. the fucking trip is ruined

        • ouch

that would really fuck me off, can't you just tell him/her that you don't want their friends to come? my mate invited a girl to Warsaw that i didn't want to come without asking me, he just assumed. she's alright but that's not really the point.

          • not really

it would make me out to be a twat. But it really is out of order, since it was a private facebook group, and was billed as a mates holiday. Because its in newquay theres only 6 of us going, so if he brings anothr 3 then thats a big portion of the party.
and theyre all metal cunts. its gonna be an embarassment to be anywhere near them. im literally so. pissed. off. i. want. blood.

            • it wouldn't make you out to be a twat at all

you're well within your rights to say something.

              • this guy is supposed to be my 'best mate'

hes well not, and never has been. but he continually bums me and says he loves me. so i cant bring myself to do it. and besides, they would probabkly come anyway and then it would be even more awkward.
problem is i KNOW theyre cunts. they came up for new years 2years ago and destroyed our house. broke my speakers, snapped my skateboard, broke my friends bed, 1 of them jizzed on my friends desk, pissed all over the toilet floor.

agh. i need to chill. im going for a shower

        • drop your mates

and come to Miss Peapods in Penryn on Monday night, there are some great bands playing, and it's a much much much nicer place than Newquay. Also, if you come to Truro cinema, come say hi!

  • more tolerant - though i've always been pretty tolerant

    but less forgiving

    i'm definitely becoming less judgmental

  • ...

Without getting into a whole backstory, I've come to realise that anger, arguments, grudges and all that bullshit - they're just toys to play with. You don't need it. You just let it go.

  • No

Whether or not I like or dislike someone depends on a whole load of variables that are usually only ever in a particular combination once. My age isn't really one of them.

  • Yeah

I used to despise everyone and throw things at people, like fruit.

    Nowadays, I merely sneer.

  • 19

and the majority of people I work with really annoy me - they're mostly around 16/17, and so so inane, they love the sounds of their own voices, and they're all quite selfish. I'm not suggesting that I was any great generous sage at that age, but they do my fucking head in. Stupid customers do also, people who can't work simple technological things like video recorders and internet booking systems, and people who are preoccupied with what other people think of them/the way they look. There are probably more, I'm pretty intolerant, hence only have about 5 friends...
