Why did no-one tell me 'Jumpers' by Sleater-Kinney was the best song in the history of everything, e

You're all fired.

Seriously though. I finally got around to listening to The Woods last night. It's a bit fucking good, isn't it?

  • :)

    • Well

I like Jumpers a lot but I think "Oh!" is the best S-K song and possibly just the best song ever Ever EVER.

  • The end of that first sentence was 'by gum'.

  • I told you, the colonol told you

The Woods is their best album. Don't let the Riot Grrrlies tell you otherwise.

    • No you didn't.

You said nothing of the sort. You were all 'Oh, bamos won't like it, blah blah blah'.

I sat there last night and 'listened' to it properly, was amazed at how ace it actually is. I've been missing out.

      • Stop building our relationship on lies

I have said many times how good The Woods is, and how good Jumpers is.

        • Well I apologise for taking this long to check it out.

Seriously though, what a song it is. Absolutely incredible. I'm just weighing up whether it would make my 'Best Of Sub Pop' CD. It's entirely possible.

          • Are you going to do that CD?

I have a best of Dischord ready for you.

            • I'm still planning.

              But yes, I shall.

              • I'm guessing many spreadsheets are involved

                • Like you wouldn't believe :)

        • Its true

Lemonbrickcombo championed that album to me at Zonino he was like 'THe Woods is better and the best' I was like yea i perfer it to and u kept on telling me to listen to it properly of which case I said I have... and its an awesome album!

  • I love The Woods

and I can't understand why some people think it's their weakest effort. It's a beast.

    • Rank them in order for us then.

      • well okay then

        The Woods
        Dig Me Out
        The Hot Rock
        One Beat
        s/t
        Call the Doctor
All Hands on the Bad One

seven albums and not a dud among them, imo. I'm proudly wearing my Dig Me Out shirt today, innit.

        • Do I have another album

          just called Sleater-Kinney?
far worse than all the others

    • it's a proper beast

just thinking the words 'what's mine is yours' gives me goosebumps.

  • Hell YES!

What a band. I remember that SK gig that me, you and SCL went to. Heady times.

And 'Jumpers' is astounding... the guitar wig-out is sex.

    • I was thinking about that last night, I'd forgotten about it.

I'm going to dig out that CD you made for me as well on the back of falling in love with this. You legend, you.

      • No, thank you

I'm revisiting The Woods now (Entertain is on NOW) and it's amazing.

See, DiS CAN be a force for healing, rather than an virtual receptacle of piss and vinegar. Or something.

        Feel the love.

  • I've said on here loads of times that The Woods is a fucking beast

and was either alone or shot down.

    I<3UGUIZ

  • Thats so weird...

i'm listening to the woods right now, and just finished listening to jumpers as I was reading your post...

  • It's okay.

But only the 7th best Sleater-Kinney album.

    • ^ Riot Grrrly

Come on, it's really amazing. So what if it has guitar solos, it sounds right. I'd put it up there with Dig Me Out.

      • Have you heard all seven?

I guess it's largely because I was into them for a fair few years before The Woods, so it came as a massive shock.

        And I hate the production.

And John Goodmanson didn't do it.

And it was pretty boring to watch played live.

        • Shamefully, no

I have Call The Doctor, Dig Me Out, The Woods and One Beat. I've heard Hot Rock a few times through as well, it was a favourite album of a girl I was seeing.

So yeah, I should get some cash and get everything. And then come back with my tail between my legs. But The Woods is just wonderful. I mean, I heard it second, after Hot Rock and it just blew me away how different and how similar it was. It's still angry and personal and emotional, but there's something else in the mix as well which I didn't find on the other albums I've heard.

        • Stop trying

to out-fan everyone. *I've* heard all seven, and I've been into them for ages, and I've seen them live, and The Woods rocks. So there.

  • it's not my favourite of theirs, but it's still sleater-kinney.

    • *i mean the woods, i'm talking about albums, not tracks.

      i'll shut up now.

  • Great song

    Great band.
Get One Beat next - it's rather good

    • Noise_annoys has voted that fourth in his list.

      DISCREPANCY.

      • Quite clearly nonsense

Dig me out is as good, I prefer it to the hot rock though.

      • oh, it's good alright

but there are a few songs on there I wasn't really feeling - Prisstina and Sympathy spring to mind. But Oh! is great, some awesome Moog action going on there.

  • combat rock

off of one-beat is their best song i reckon...

  • I'm going to put this on now

This afternoon has been amazing. Pearl Jam and now Sleater Kinney. What will come next? Who knows.

  • How can

All Hands On The Bad One not be their best album? It has Pompeii for heaven's sake!

    • The Hot Rock for me

      'Start Together' - oof.

  • no!

i even said to someone last night 'why do people go on about Jumpers?' and i sat and listened to it several times, and then to the whole of The Woods, and basically, YOU'RE ALL WRONG IT'S NOT THE BEST ONE.
although, i suppose, it's nice that you're saying a S-K song is the best song ever.

    • ^ Riot Grrrly

    • It's very, very good

    • I'm not comparing it to anything else.

But as a complete outsider, with barely any S-K experience, it's fucking phenomenal. What a song.

      • like i said

as a big sleater-kinney fan, i think it's nice that you think that. better than chumbawumba, anyway :)

        • I was enjoying this thread.

Now I'm afraid I'm going to have to murder you.

          • you can't murder me

            i'm from lincoln.

            • Ah, the 'Lincoln Defence'.

As used by all top-flight comic book writers. Where were you when I was in Lincoln? Damn you.

              • If it was between the years of

                1997-2003, i was in Lincoln.

                • ZOMGOSH

Maybe we walked past each other, or something. Or maybe I served you in the pub! Who knows. Incredible scenes.

                  • haha

what pub did you work in?
to be honest, i was probably too young/ busy standing out on the streets slagging chumbawumba off.

                    • t'Varsity.

I was a poor needy student.

                      • aww, bless

yeah, you probably served me when i was about 15. isn't that nice?

    • Entertain is the best, innit

  • Call the doctor is their best album

but they are all pretty good.

  • It certainly is that good.

Although it is surpassed by the title track of One beat though.

All albums but the first two (S/T and Call the Doctor) are excellent and those two are fairly decent as well.

    • call the doctor isn't excellent?

We must be listening to different albums. There isn't a weak song on there.

      • It just doesn't really grab me

in the way most of the others do. '... Joey Ramone' kicks ass though.

  • Jumpers is very nearly

my favourite song ever. Everything about it is perfect, I don't think it could be improved in any way. The lyrics, the voices, the way everything drops out in a splash noise at the end, it's all incredible.

    • I love it but I think Entertain is better.

That's mainly for the way she sings the final verse.

      Fucking immense album.

      • I think Night Light and Jumpers are my favourites

The Fox is an amazing opener.

      • Yeah Yeah

        Much love for Entertain.

  • it is a bit fucking good

but their other stuff is really fucking good.

    • but it sounds like Led Zeppelin!

      Oh yeh, right...
      :'(

      • :'''''''''''''-(

      • p.s. tell me yr S-K album chart pls

        • 1. Dig Me Out

          2. Call The Doctor
          3. One Beat
          4. The Hot Rock
          5. All Hands On The Bad One
          6. Sleater-Kinney
          7. The Woods

          It's quite hard.
I really like the songs on s/t, I just think some of them sound a bit stodgy. Janet could have made it awesome maybe.
And some songs on All Hands On The Bad One are amongst my favourite S-K (Youth Decay <3), but some are my LEAST FAVOURITE (You're No Rock 'n Roll Fun, The Ballad Of A Ladyman).
Dig Me Out and Call The Doctor are easily my faourites.

          and yrs?

          • 1. dig me out

i am so shit at these things i cannot decide anything ever. i can't decide where to put All Hands.. cos it maybe MEANS the most... and though i rly like hot rock, s/t and one beat, i haven't listened to them as much for some reason.

            so...

            2. call the doctor
            3. all hands
            4. one beat
            5. hot rock
            6. the woods
            7. sleater-kinney

i've already changed my mind. i can't do this...

            • I think that if you and I

both choose Dig Me Out and Call The Doctor as top two, there's no question that's the right answer.

              • that's the only 2 i'm sure of rly

they're also the only ones i've chosen to listen to in the last 6 months or something.

                but yeah, yr right. DEFINITIVE.

                • I don't think The Woods can be in the same chart

I mean, you can randomise everything barring the eponymous album and Woods because of the production. The others all sound very similar in the same great way Fugazi albums do.

The Woods has a special place for when you want a bit more loud and rock; the first one is more for when you need it sounding fucking garage.

Sorry. I have no idea what I mean really. They're all amazing.

  • If we're voting on fav S-K song

put me down for #1 Must Have (AHOTBO). kthxbye.

    • One More Hour

      heart breaking stuff, that..

  • Erm,

    cos it izzunt.
