I've been a Notwist obsessive since seeing them at the ICA a couple of months back and being blown away. Now we've had the Devil,You + Me to listen to for a little while, who agrees that it may even be better than Neon Golden?
It's instantly accessible, with its catchy little hooks and riffs, but over time reveals its subtleties. Anyone disagree?
That's a big call
Saying that the new album doesn't have a track as bad as the eponymously (is that a word?) titled track off of Neon Golden which blighted an otherwise perfect album....
But yeah, maybe no.
But it is great, and at the end of the day, music is the winner here today.
I can understand people not liking the Notwist,
but to like all of Neon Golden except for the title track is incomprehensible! Did you dislike it from the get go, or did that take a while to ferment?
Vive la difference...
really?
i loved the title track from Neon Golden! The new one is defenitely a grower (I got it of the interweb a couple of weeks before the ICA show and it definitely helped knowing the songs beforehand. Having listened for a few weeks now I don't think it's got the staying power of Neon Golden but there are some tracks I just keep going back to..
the notwist
are my favourite band hands down. i cant call which album i like best despite having listened to neon golden a million theyre both very different but both fucking awesome!
Both?
What about their other four albums?
Their earlier stuff...
...is pretty good too, but I think the best approach is to start with Neon Golden and work o.utwards
i assumed
the post above was in refernce to neon golden and dy&m.
i adore shrink and unlike many others, i like them heavy. there better when not, but there still very good when they are.
Yes
12 certainly has its high points. And 'Day 7' followed by 'Chemicals' is their best one-two start to an album.
I very much like dy+m
but it's not as great as Neon Golden, but perhaps just by a small margin. I think I originally didn't like the title track from Neon Golden, but I grew to like it as well.
^ exactly this
I disagre
love Neon Golden.
Can't get into Devil, You + Me at all.
I found it a major let down, very bland
Persevere...
...seriously. It's worth it.
I don't know about better than Neon Golden just yet
but it is definitely one of my favourite albums of this year
it's not as good
although i can't help thinking that this is partly because i was so blindsighted by what a wonderful album neon golden was, and so fondly remember it, while DY&M has to work for your affection, when you know what's coming.
or maybe it's just not as good.

Nutshell:
"According to the die-hards, to liken this record to its predecessor is to compare Blu-Ray Casino Royale to vintage GoldenEye. They're right, of course, but bear in mind what they really mean is GoldenEye for the N64. And that's a tough one for most people to get over."
