Really isn’t very good.
I’ve tried to like it, I even fooled myself into liking it for a day or so, but revisiting it now, it really isn’t very good.
Ok, so the musicianship is a technical marvel and it’s clear all the members are skilled players. It may be cos I’m just not a massive fan of screamo/post-hardcore stuff, but, like many who posted on that “genre’s you just don’t like”-type thread that was knocking about on here a few days ago, I try and seek out the good in almost every genre I come across. And when I read all about TSOPTC, the friction in the band when writing it, the heavy going liner notes and the lyrics, I thought for sure I would like the album.
The band ascribe to some heavy, literary ideologies about the West, Capitalism etc, and the liner notes mention the philosophy of Urbanism, which interests me. I was convinced (and like I said, subsequently convinced myself into liking it for a short time – “It must be good”) I would enjoy it, but all the aggression just dilutes their message and shouts “THE GOVERNMENT IS BAD. THE UPPER CLASSES ARE BAD” at you, becoming more and more irritating with every song.
Anyone else?
Yes? No? Fuck off twat? Thanks for reading.
New Noise still fkin ROCKS mind.
Nothing personal, but....
Fuck off twat.
No worries...
...but EXPLAIN plz.
I love it
I'm not very good at explaining why I like things though. Also, its not that isnt very good, its just that you don't like it.
so you don't mention any of the music
and think that most of the lyrics are about "the upper classes"?
Ok no,
that was badly put. I was just scanning through the liner notes and it mentioned 'This situation of Art Vs Life and the present elitism within the bourgeoisie and upper-class'. Thematically though many of the lyrics seem to harp on about distribution of power, capitalist systems, etc etc.
...
New Noise rocks everyones mind.
I think, with Refused its not so much a love or hate aspect but more of a "love", "respect for ideologies" or "Never heard of" kinda thing...
I kinda
respect the ideologies, I just think what informed the lyrics and ideas in the album is so much better than what their lyrics and music actually manage to communicate.
fair enough if you don't like it.
Personally i think it's a blinding album - absolute beast!!!
i've gone off it
i used to love it when i was doing my a levels. i wore a refused are fucking dead t shirt to school. i was dead cool.
the last time i listened to it, i thought it sounded over produced and a bit crappy. not as intense as i remembered. maybe i'm getting old.
You didn't have it loud enough.
maybe. I listened to it again after about a year or two's gap. Still thought it was ace, and I know a lot more hardcore than I did back then, so it isn't that.
valid arguement
to be honest i'm never interested in a band's politics because I generally don't believe you can pigdeonhole such a broad topic.
I think it kinda depends on your age and your musical pallet, when I discovered this album I was like 14/15 and it was before anything i'd discovered that sounded even remotely as musically revolutionary.
I'd bet a small wager if I was listening to them now for the first time I wouldn't think much of it.
The songwriting is really concise which I think is the important thing, and Sandstrom's drumming is out-of-worldly and what's also is exciting is how the production works to make the whole thing feel damned alive throughout and lyxzen's vocals getting strained and putting a lot of drama into it.
this all said though, I haven't bothered with it for a couple years now, I went onto Converge and now a days i'd rather listen to 'Hidden World' by Fucked Up.
So I guess all i'm saying is it depends on your musical development on how much you will think of this album/band. Also it seems like if you like Fugazi you'll hate this band; just something i've noticed.
I like both
but I'm not trying to disprove your argument, as you're totally right about the drumming.
Fugazi are one of those bands
I know a stupid amount about without having listened to a single note of their music, so I couldn't say. That said i'm not sure i'ld like them very much.
Good points all round though. I imagine I probably would've liked it if I had gotten into it when I was younger.
BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME.
END THREAD.
A few things
Firstly, I'm not sure how anyone can take the sentiments expressed on that album seriously given Dennis' subsequent work with INC.
Secondly, it's really not some kind of genre-bending masterpiece. It's fairly standard (if above average) post-hardcore with a few fairly nasty electronic flourishes and a couple of samples thrown in. In terms of musical innovation within that scene, Fugazi really have it nailed; they've incorporated dub, afrobeat, 60s pop, jazz and noise influences but within a punk template and, to my ears, are infinitely more interesting.
That said, I used to absolutely love Refused and I'm well aware they opened up my ears to new sounds. It's just that they're one of those bands who seem less and less revolutionary as you begin to listen to more and more music.
I bought this album on Friday
I can wholeheartedly say that I 100% disagree with you on this one. For me, 'The Shape Of Punk To Come' is an untouchable masterpiece.
^ this
I heard they were going to reform or something...
If they did
I'd pay with a limb to see them, easily.
The band broke up because they knew they could never top TSOPTC. Doesn't that tell you about how good that album is?
Not really
I'd say it says more about the scope of their ambition/ability.
Lyxzen's hardly pushing boundaries with INC is he?
I wouldn't go
it wouldn't be right.
I think part of the reason it's viewed as such
is that they split so soon after its release. That, and the fact that when you compare it to the rest of their discography, it's wildly superior.
i don't like Refused, no.
is this a joke?
ive got to tidy my room in a bit
and im planning on listening to it on full volume because its a great great record. One of my all time faves.
SHAPE OF PUNK LOVERS
Let's quote lyrics
They say the classics never go out of style, but they do, they do.
So, my baby, I never though that we'd do to.
Haha I love this one
<3
is it not
somehow baby, I never thought that we'd do too?
For those interested the band AC4 I think it is has Dennis and the old Refused guitarist in
You are correct
Can I scream? Yeah!
I like The Lost Patrol
I must be the only person that does, but they're really good for twee.
AN AGE OLD SECRET FOR THE NEW ROMANTICS
"We're all dressed up, we got nowhere to go."
"ALL DRESSED UP!"
What's all this bollocks about 'screamo'?
I've been listening to Refused since I was 16 (1996) and they were never once described as screamo by anyone back then.
Would everyone please stop bastardising genre names please?
Kthxbai
yeah
they really aren't anywhere near screamo
Ok
I just said that cos it had screaming in it.
Apologeeeeeeeeeys to the max
reading this
was the most horrific waste of time ive ever had to endure.
grow up.
lol wut
Were my scribblings childish or something?
*grows up*
In my top three albums of all time
and will always be.
listen to the drums
they are fucking immense
Fuck of twat
I take this as a personal insult.
.
Ahem *off*
grow up
.
No
i listened to this again for the first time in ages last night
it was okay. the guy's voice gets a bit annoying after a while. the liner notes are quite entertaining but seem a little half baked at times.
if i was still 16 and listening to it for the first time i can see why i would love it. being a cynical 23 year old, i instead noticed all the bits they'd jocked from other bands.
Its alright
Slightly annoying voice, amazing guitars and drums, awful production. Too shiney.
7 out of 10.
they're just
not as good as enter shikari ;-)
I'm kind of with you
never really fell for it.
I still love the album
and many of the newer synth techno punk bands just don't come close And completely miss the point
The Rise are damn good though!!
DFYOU
go climb a wall of dicks
