the strokes

are they really that good?

  • They're better.

Their first album stands up there with the greats of absolutely all time. Alright, maybe not Sgt Pepper, but certainly with anything since.

It doesn't matter if they were ripping off garage bands from the 60s. They still made the best thing anyone had heard in millions of years.

Do I think its better than Definitely Maybe? YES. I think its MILES better.

I think its a sign of this decade's popular guitar music's superiority over the previous'. The 90s was about GRUNGE and then about BRITPOP. The 00s have been about dancing and being sexy and having fun, as opposed to moaning about how shit it is to be an American teenager or a Northern idiot stuck in a shit job.

    • i agree about the sexy and having fun

i just find them quite boring to listen to. Oh well, i'm pretty sure it's just me.

      • It's not just you

Hard To explain's a great song but, that aside, it's just background noise.

    • its very lazy of me to do this but....

      this^^^^^^^^^

      • Only Room On Fire is boring

There are only about three tracks that I can distinguish as separate from the others.
First Impressions Of Earth was a huge step forward for them and easily the best stuff they've written (in my opinion - please don't hurt me!).
I do quite enjoy Is This IT? but I don't think it's as defining an album as people say it is (again, please don't hurt me!).

        • I love

          Room On Fire

          • I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to say that

            I'm well controversial, me!

          • I too.

The last tracks are poor but its an essential record to own.

    • Then would you say the Arctic Monkeys

are a band leftover from the 90s?

  • In the last 2 hours

I have just listened to all 3 albums, FIOE really is good, I hate how it's been critised so harshly by most. It's an amazing album with a few duds but the rest makes up for it.

It really is a 9/10 album and ROF and IST 10/10. I literally cannot wait for new material from then as long as they don't complete ruin their music like Bloc Party have.

    • is this it?

is, i think, their best album they've made. but whats happened to them?

      • Laziness and the press getting to their heads.

Also the stupid idiot criticism from people that THEY HAVENT CHANGED THEIR SOUNDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

Its their SECOND FUCKING ALBUM. GIVE THEM A FUCKING BREAK.

As a result, they released that pathetic nonsense that was the third one.

        • 'You Really Live Once' I thought (and still think) of as a classic

although after I think track 5, FIOE just blends into a mess of songs that never get going and then the album combusts out of boredom. Was so disappointed after the excitement of 'You Only Live Once'...hmmm.

  • no

they are just ok and I always thought that they were just ok.

    • In hindsight

Is This It? probably isn't as good as everyone in the whole wide world would've had you believe a few years ago. Room on Fire isn't as bad as everyone would have you believe, and First impressions is decidedly average. They weren't really the saviours of guitar music, were they?

      • No

        but Beulah were.

      • yeah

I think just alot of people jummped on the bandwagon with it. I was kinda more into dance music and electronicstuff at the time Storkes where coming thru so it all kinda passed me by. But it didn't seem that special to me.

  • I think they probably were, for a bit

but then they got boring, then they got first impressions of earth which is one of the flabbiest records I've listened to huuuuuge disappointment. Basically just buy ITI. Casablancas isn't the world's most original song writer but on that album all the other people's ideas he uses sound much better in his hands...

    • I think ITI and ROF

are full of great songwriting. FIOE however does seem to get overly pretentious, cliched and annoying later on in the album.

I still think he is a pretty amazing songwriter though.

      • "Soma

is what they would take when
hard times opened their eyes, saw pain in a new way...High stakes for a few names
        Racing against sun beams
        Losing against their dreams
        In your eyes"

"He knows it's justified to kill to survive
He then in dollars makes more dead than alive
Let's suck more blood, let's work three hours a day
The world is over but I don't care
        'Cause I am with you"

        God i love them

  • FUCK YEAH

    • I've heard a million records in my life

but despite all of them, the moment me, my best friend and the 2 girls we were with heard SOMEDAY for the first time on pills at a party in London will live with me forver.

I don't care what The Strokes do next all i can say is "God bless them".

  • in a word

    yes.

    • they are bloody good

all 3 albums for different reasons. Listen for yourself.

  • Personally thought that

the first album, apart from a couple of ace songs, was pretty dull. Nothing exciting at all and all of the "ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVA!!1!!" hyperbole around it left me confused and still does to this day.

I think they have got much better with every album and I am now seriously looking forward to the new material.
