DiS Weekly Album Club Week 4

Now it's time to visit the guitars again after a brief stop of at some glitch pop.

This weeks album was choosen by Spicer and I know this one will get a very favourable reaction by the majority of users on Drownedinsound, so for many I bet this is more of a re-visit then anything.

The album is:
Icarus Line - Mono

And there you have it toomanykooks just soiled himself. So go listen!

The similarities between the Icarus Line and another Southern California hardcore band, Drive Like Jehu, are hard not to miss on Mono. While Drive Like Jehu has disbanded, these two bands still share much in common. Both have speedy guitars that can break down into melodies and then burst out of the gates at the drop of a hat. Both have throaty, screamed vocals and odd song titles, with the Icarus Line's "Feed a Cat to Your Cobra" quite possibly being the weirdest. While it may take a while for many music fans to distinguish differences between the two acts, they do exist. The Icarus Line has an extreme fetish with feedback, which they display on such songs as "In Lieu" and "SPMC," yet surprisingly they do it in an almost appealing way. While creating an almost sexy, intoxicating mood in many of their pieces, the Icarus Line are also capable of gearing into a destructive, anxious hardcore. Whether live or on this album, the Icarus Line are going back to the basics of rock & roll and destroying quite a bit along the way.

I reckon this'll be too harsh for most

Stunning album though. This is a great idea, matt, I've been lurking the shadows and enjoying reading some of these threads.

Your ears are about to be raped

in the best possible way.

I look forward to it

(that sounds wrong)

It's a great hardcore album

I enjoy it but took me some adjusting

I don't think hardcore does it justice

It's too wild and leering. Hardcore implies order of some sort. Yeah, I'll save it for the discussion....

If it's too harsh for someone

they're clearly an idiot!

woo!

not got this one, been meaning to listen to Icarus Line for a while

Yesiamaduck

do you think you could do a tally of the genres in the list? so we could have an idea whats coming up...

I havent heard all of them

so this would take forever

wiki

gooo on, i dunno if i can justify buying 50 albums if theyre all gonna be indie rock n post hardcore

The is some

electronic, hip hop and even rock n roll I don't know what else... brit pop.... yea i'm sure the is a range.

cool, ta for tht

any metal?

Yea

from what i recall the is some metal

any jazz?

country?
funk?

my suggestion

is 'sludge'

whatever that means!!! haha

Have you already made a list?

I want to contribute :( This is a great idea BTW

The list has been made up....

if it lasts a year then i will do a new one lol

ooooh *bump*

and i bought 'Penance Soiree' a few years ago but never really got into it. so nows a chance for me to give Icarus Line another chance :)

ps i can't find anywhere to 'get it quick' online

*ahem*

so if anyone who already has it could link me up i'd appreciate it a lot! :)

I mean

the link to the album page on last.fm at the bottom of the original post

yeah, and thanks

but i meant so i can put it on my mp3 player for when i go out :)

Just

spotted this. Loved last week, already love the Icarus Line.

Another that I've got on CD!

I dug out my copy this morning and managed (due to traffic) to listen to most of it.

Louder, rawer, faster, harder

yeah, it is very different.

Though I don't understand what there is not to 'get' about Penance

It's one of the most immediate albums I've ever heard. Updating and rechanneling the magic of MC5 and The Stooges.

i never 'got it' before

but then i haven't listened to it in a couple of years so i'll give it another chance.

i think it was partly because i had heard so many great things about it, that i got it and didn't see what was so special about it.

Anyway - can anyone, erm, upload Mono for me?

I'll repay the favour if something comes up that i've got!

ok, maybe i just didn't see what was so special about it.

it didn't do much for me, i didn't mean that i couldn't understand it, although they're kind of the same thing.

feed a cat to your cobra is about sex

lolz!

i think they sound more like the jesus lizard then drive like jehu. i re-listened to mono fairly recently and it holds up a lot better then some similar bands.
the opening track is one of the best ways to start a record.

shit

what was week three?

Dntel

a life full of possibilities

Bought this when it came out in 2001 or something after randomly seeing one of their live shows.

Brutal record, but in a good way!
