Handing in your notice...

without a job lined up to go to, is this really stupid or the way to give yourself a kick up the arse to get a new job?

I've a two month notice period, and with company restructuring my current job is completely changing departments & bosses and will be going to be going from being quite shitty, with some pluses, to just plain shitty (probably, as they've yet to decide on what the actual role will entail) on the 1st of October.

My boss told me all this yesterday, and she's no longer going to be my boss, and advised me to start having a look for new jobs as she is now doing (she's getting messed around too).

So, should I hand in my notice and be free in September, with the knowledge that I must get a new job by then? Or wait it out a bit longer, find out exactly what is happening?

I'm really tempted to hand in my notice, as I don't think they'll replace me before the restructuring takes place and it will completely fuck them over. They're already not replacing one of my colleagues who leaves this week, and her work is just completely up in the air until October and somehow meant to just happen.

No...

now is really not the right time to do that. Find a job first.

is it really that bad?

there seems to be a lot of jobs available that
a: aren't exactly what i'm wanting to do but are similar to my current role, with similar or better pay.
b: are more what i want to be doing, and even more if i'm willing to take a bit of a pay cut.

Well in that case you should be able to get one first?

I don't think it will give you a kick up the arse. You'll just realise how long the gaps are between interviews and people answering phone calls :(

I'm naturally cautious/worried about stuff

so if it was me I'd make sure I had something else lined up.

I handed in my notice because I was sick of being told to sign people up for loyalty cards

I dont know how im going to make my final paycheck last

depends

any chance of getting a redundancy after the restructuring?

very much doubt it

as, although my current role will be changing and moving departments, the bulk of it will still be the same. I expect.

Not personally, no.

My motivation would die pretty much immediately until I got jerked back into reality one week before I finished my job when I realised that I didn't know what I was going to do.

Aside from any job-related doom prospects that the credit nonsense may bring.

.

i'm going to be doing exactly that in september. and normally i would say 'get a job lined up first' but what i'm going to do is hand in my notice which will bring me right up to my holiday. when i get back from that i will temp for a few weeks or until i find a decent permanent job. i am determined to leave this place.

see this is kind of my plan

i could probably line up some decent, and interesting work, for september, and I'd hope to be able to find a decent job in the next 3 months.

I'd find a job, then leave

I know someone who left there job about 3months ago with the idea that they'd find something that they were more interested in doing and they're still unemployed. At least as bad as you're job may become you've still got money coming in etc, and you can take paid time off to go to interviews etc.

^ths

unless you have savings I would strongly advise you to look and carry on where you are.

You should get another job to move onto

before quitting, financially it could be a disaster.

Check your holidays.

Make sure you've not taken more than your allotted share this far into the year or they'll dock your pay.

damn you sensible people

and the voice of reason.

what about the enjoyment of screwing the man!

pah.

Screwing the man is fine

if you're not relying on your pay cheque every month

Sigh.

You've got to leave that place by October

or you'll go mad. And I'll be cross with you if you haven't left by then.

So do it! There's always going to be work out there for someone who can do websitey things, so you can always temp for a bit if you don't find your ideal job over the Summer.
