aka the i'm indier than thou thread

Just made me curious from the Dizzee Rascal thread where someone said they had only recently heard it, and it made me wonder how many UK number 1's I have heard from this year. Wikipedia says they consist of:

"When You Believe"- Leon Jackson
"Now You're Gone"- Basshunter
"Mercy"- Duffy
"American Boy"- Estelle featuring Kanye West
"4 Minutes"- Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake
"That's Not My Name"- The Ting Tings
"Take a Bow"- Rihanna
"Singin' in the Rain"- Mint Royale
"Viva la Vida"- Coldplay
"Closer"- Ne-Yo
"Dance Wiv Me"- Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris and Chrome

Of the above, I think I have only heard Madonna (in a McDonalds in Paris, when they had a music channel on) and Mint Royale from the advert the song was on. and maybe I've heard The Ting Tings on their tv advert (I think they have?), but I'm not sure.

It feels so strange being so detached and separated from number 1 after number 1. & yet I don't feel a bit sad.

oh god no

please

I've only heard

mint royale.... about 4 years ago. Like wtf?

heard american boy, tis good

reviewed That's Not My Name for DiS on its original release.

i think i MIGHT've heard the mint royale in the background to Britain's Got Talent?

heard the coldplay

I haven'y heard these

Leon Jackson
Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake
Rihanna
Coldplay
Ne-Yo

I'm pretty sure I have heard all the rest of them at least some of the song anyway. Its more than I expected considering I haven't listened to any Radio for qite some time.

none at all

*indie*

5.

not too shabby.

Duffy is all ive heard

and thats it.

can i be you please?

life with ting tings must be truly uplifting

*without

bollox

I've heard four

and the dizzee song flopped it's dick on the other 3.

i've only heard Duffy

i'm sure i've heard all the others i just don't know what/who they are. I think i heard the Coldplay one and laughed because it's so bad.

3

duffy, madonna and ting tings.

a sorry state of affairs.

when i was younger and ardently obsessive with indie music i still knew everything that was in the pop charts. in fact, i could probably give you a rough placing for every top forty single at any time. now i have no clue. i'm pretty much convinced this came about around the same time as the end of itv's chart show. or maybe around the same time i got my life together and got a boyfriend. who can say!

Three

The thing is, two of those at least were download only and one was never properly reissued, getting there on TV exposure alone. And the industry wonders why the singles chart is less fawned over than it used to be.

I've heard most of those

I don't see how anyone couldn't have heard Mercy, Viva la Vida or American Boy

I haven't.

I don't listen to the radio, and don't watch a lot of TV.

I've only heard the Ne-Yo one

'cause it's awesome

not heard the Ne-Yo song

but i'm pretty sure it sucks utter balls. Much like the rest, really

I mean, i like pop n all, but that is some seriously wack shit right there

Run-down

"When You Believe"- Leon Jackson

Inadequate X Factor Winner cover of Whitney/Mariah thing. Song clearly only chosen because of how well the lyrics lends itself to the black and white / montage winner's video.

"Now You're Gone"- Basshunter

Balls-to-the-wall Scandinavian euro-trance of the sort you thought had died years ago. Rubbish, but I like the way the follow up single continues the story, with the same actors in the video, and with cliffhangers and stuff. Could be Europops 'Snow Goose'

"Mercy"- Duffy

Wafer-thin pomp-pomp garden party pop pitched between Bonnie Tyler and Dusty Springfield. Big in Wales.

"American Boy"- Estelle featuring Kanye West

Pisspoor let-down comeback from Jamelia-with-talent, with token rap phoned in by Kanye. Rather fantastically tuneless for a number one single, though.

"4 Minutes"- Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake

One of her worst singles, this reminded me of the one she did with Britney, 'Me Vs the Music'. Self-referenetial tick-tock lyrics, dancing in her pants, everything you want from a gash comeback single with a hip-hop 'flava'. Except a tune.

"That's Not My Name"- The Ting Tings

Toni Basil

"Take a Bow"- Rihanna

Mawkish forgettable ballad presumably turned down by loads of inferior US pop stars like all her other songs, but done justice because bizarrely Rihanna can do little wrong.

"Singin' in the Rain"- Mint Royale

Ridiculour throwaway big-beat whoops-a-daisy prankster version of the age-old classic, achieving the status somehow of not only giving Mint Royale one of the strangest chart trajectories in recent memory, but also the rare achievement of a song 'selling' out to two different facets of the 'man'. Top work!

"Viva la Vida"- Coldplay.

The one from the ipod advert. Interesting example of how TV advertising has taken over from the singles chart for promoting a band's album. Not a good song, mind.

"Closer"- Ne-Yo

R+B rediscovering the joys of electro and dance music culture to bolster their records has to be the best thing to happen to music this year. This is actually very good, as are several other similar records by Chris Brown, the new Usher, a few others, doing the rounds

"Dance Wiv Me"- Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris and Chrome

The worst of the lot. This is HIDEOUS, the rhymes are lazier than lazie. Makes you wonder what Mylo's doing though, with with Calvin Harris milling around. And I don't even like Mylo.
