this sounds like bloc party decided to make a fucked up mess of trying to sound like them with all the loops and horns then remixed it for the most annoying dance floor ever.
jesus christ this is fucking terrible. i mean, it'd be an ok remix, and the live drums towards the end are pretty cool, and its nice that they're doing something a bit different, but GOSH this is not good
rest of the band apart from the drummer must be soooo bored.
keles vocals are even fucking programmed.
imagine this preformed live - lol.
but i do like it.
these threads that get made when something gets put online/leaked are always amazing.
brash first impressions + conflicting opinions = a good time.
reminds me of oink though :((
Silent Alarm was, for the most part, a brilliant album. A breath of fresh air at the time. This, I think, was primarily due to the visceral energy it had which was - in no small part - down to Matt Tong's absolutely stellar drumming.
The focus wasn't on the lyrics (which were pretty oblique and meaningless) and this allowed the music to shine.
Then, for some reason, Kele decided he was the next Byron and started singing about foie gras and such like. This is where it all went wrong; when Kele's ego took over and Matt's drums were pushed so low in the mix. That is why I have listened to WITC maybe 7 or 8 times and probably never will again.
I actually didn't mind Flux - decent indie disco type of tune. But I suspect this new one is a piece of pap.
Disappointing is an understatement for this song. How can they do this, after fucking Silent Alarm how could they fuck up this bad and become forgettable and typical of the usual indie crap pop / dance.
When the quick drumming comes in at 3.00 or so it starts to sound quite good... then nothing happens and it's not expanded upon to anyway to be either epic or a good dance track. Just... disappointing.
e.g. So Here We Are and its wanky little sensitive guitar shapes underpinning Kele's pointless moaning
This song has a heavy beat (which gets better and better as the song goes on - congas ferchrissakes!), some badass synth bass and some really great horn melodies (even if they are cribbed off Volta) as well as a near free jazz horn solo - if it goes on to get massive airplay on Radio 1 then that's a Good Thing. I'm sure it'll probably get lots of noobs saying "what is this noise" etc.
Of course, the lyrics are completely jank (what's new there, eh?), but i find the whole Mercury bit fairly pleasing. His voice is still terrible but it kind of works, and you get the impression that he's not actually taking it too seriously (which is definitely a Good Thing for BP). Although knowing Kele, it probably is played totally straight - in which case it's amusing, rather than earnest and annoying
I have only played it once all the way thru. It was just annoying I will give it another go soon mind. It has that Prayer vibe to it but not as focused. Fair play to them for trying something new and out of the blue but I just dont think they pulled it off.
and a fair bit of cribbage, but i think it all works pretty well considering the disparate parts. And i'd rather it was slightly loopy and stupid than "focussed" (aka normal)
i'm still not totally crazy about it, obvz (tis Bloc Party, after all). But it's actually "quite good". And the slating it's had on here is predictable, to say the least
So the big countdown thing on their website was for this?
what pack of pretentious bastards.
why is that pretentious?
also. what the fuck is this?
a
new song?
well, yes.
But it's a massive "what the fuck is this?"
TING-A-LING!
oh no they have managed
to get worse :(
I'd rather listen to cherry blairon richard and judy than this song
thats what my sis just said she wants it turned off, butim only gona turn it off when the guitar comes in.
its well crunk
hmmm
not up to much is it
lovin
the synth in what i guess is the 'chorus' though like.
its too sparse overall though, just sounds like a remix, cant think how they'll do it live.
it sounds like a messed up
TV on the Radio tune but obviously alot worse in every way possible
take it back
I like TV on the Radio
this sounds like bloc party decided to make a fucked up mess of trying to sound like them with all the loops and horns then remixed it for the most annoying dance floor ever.
fair enough i guess
i suppose you could compare the bassy-ness and stuff but it is just a pile of shit.
yeah didnt mean to be mean
about TVotR hehe they rule!
it's awful
THE FUCK IS THIS??!£!@£
what's with the horns? did they get ronson'd?
they are fucking so shit. awful song.
the most annoying song yet
very disapointed
^ this
they used to be a good band
"my mercury's in retrograde"
what does that even mean?
HE DOESN'T LIKE CHOCOLATE
I really like it
not suprised that all you miserable tossers on here hate it though
THE PRICE OF GAS
KEEPS ON RISING
east london is a vampire
and he's trying to be
heroic in an age of modernity. simple.
Aren't we all though
personally I enjoy doing it whilst sitting in Soho trying to stay drunk
Or sleeping with people
we don't even LIKE!
I'll be waiting for you
in the Joiners Arms
its an astrology thing isnt it
jesus christ this is fucking terrible. i mean, it'd be an ok remix, and the live drums towards the end are pretty cool, and its nice that they're doing something a bit different, but GOSH this is not good
I assume he is talking about
http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/Display.cfm?Term=retrograde%20condensation
Which is hilarious as it is something I was doing in work today.
why the fuck would it be about that ?
It's basically to do with the position of the planet Mercury in the sky.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrograde_and_direct_motion
But presumably it's a reference to the stupid astrology bit at the bottom.
Fucking stupid lyric though.
I thought it was "Retro grave"
?
the
rest of the band apart from the drummer must be soooo bored.
keles vocals are even fucking programmed.
imagine this preformed live - lol.
but i do like it.
plus
these threads that get made when something gets put online/leaked are always amazing.
brash first impressions + conflicting opinions = a good time.
reminds me of oink though :((
There's no guitar?
Wow
What a heap of shit.
It sounds like they've listened to Bjork's 'Volta' and raped it while it slept.
i love bloc party
and was even a big fan of AWITC, but i do agree... this song sounds pretty damn bad in my opinion.
it's quite depressing, bands should progress and move on but i miss the times of silent alarm alot after listening to this song.
I concur
This song makes me sad.
I've just listened to it...
But I'm not sure what I've just heard.
I don't know what to think.
:(
Lol. That's what I mean,
It's left me feeling confused!
Oh dear
Where's the taught riffs, dudes!?
Little bit disapointed
I liked Flux and loved AWITC.
:(
I do like the synth on the chorus though.
I still have high hopes for the album.
In fact....
after 3 plays it is growing on me.
I'll listen to it but it's not the Bloc Party sound I'm after.
Hmm.
Pretty rubbish. Not sure I like it at all. Trying to hard to sound different. Go back to angular guitar riffs lads, that where the future lies.
Matt Tong
should just join another fucking band were he's used to his full advantage, instead of sticking him on the high hat. Fucking Kele!
What
are Mercury's in retro grey anyway, is it a type of shoe?
This
Fuck
That link isn't leading anywhere productive. Any tips on where I can hear this?
Apparently
'Mercury in Retrograde' has something to do with astrology, wtf is he on? lol
Crazy Bitch.
^This
I can't hear it coz the link isn't working just now
But I'll assume it is shit.
Silent Alarm was, for the most part, a brilliant album. A breath of fresh air at the time. This, I think, was primarily due to the visceral energy it had which was - in no small part - down to Matt Tong's absolutely stellar drumming.

^ this
except for the bit about Flux, that was shit
Yeah
I just listened to it again there.
It is shit.
You've pretty much nailed it,
without even listening, impressive.
looks
like they've taken it down.
I don't know why it's there anyway.
It would have been cooler if it was just played on the show. Then put up after.
Yeah
they have, maybe it's before anybody else hears it and Bloc Party fans abandon them for good.
i have
my window still up, so i can hear it.
gutted, you!!!!
...oh, no. wait.
ITS ON NOW!
W....T.....F is this shit?
I just heard it.
Well, it's different...
I don't mind it...I really like the mad bit with crazy strings just before the break down actually.
EXCEPT
His voice does my tits in. What a wanker he sounds like.
yeah
I liked the music, but his voice doesn't suit it at all and the lyrics (from what I picked out) seemed....well, crap.
Well,
I say like....
That was absolutely terrible.
No redeeming features whatsoever.
But all the people listening
on Radio One LOVED it!
yeah!
it was ill, dude.
That doesn't surprise me.....
What
did Zane Lowe say about it?
Unsurprisingly
he came all over its face.
Lol
thought as much.
he speaks too fast
I don't understand what he's saying.
Oooh
He's playing Death Cab now so all is forgiven!
blah blah blah
looks how brown my tongue is..etc..etc...
He is a slimy cunt at the best of times. Love You Zane <3 xXx
Surely there's somewhere on the internet I can hear this?
.
http://www.blocparty.com/videos.php
The player has no controls, ew.
?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe/
That plays it.
Disappointing is an understatement for this song. How can they do this, after fucking Silent Alarm how could they fuck up this bad and become forgettable and typical of the usual indie crap pop / dance.
this is like the musical equivilent
of that simpsons episode where Poochie makes his debut appearance on Itchy and Scratchy..what with everyone thinking it's utter shit with disbelief.
This song doesn't go anywhere, and as said above, no redeemable features.
Next please.
Actually
When the quick drumming comes in at 3.00 or so it starts to sound quite good... then nothing happens and it's not expanded upon to anyway to be either epic or a good dance track. Just... disappointing.
compare this to
this modern love.
what happened?
thumbs down
i quite like it
but i did fear they would eventually make every song like flux
LOL @ 3.10
marching band tune gone horribly wrong -
it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for his bloody awful voice tho
my mercury's in retrograde=I have a thermometer up my ass
what the hell is wrong with you people?
this is the best thing they've ever done
If that's not sarcasm, you're mad.
Every song of the first 2 albums is better than this.

Just comparing So Here We Are's amazing guitar to Mercury is completely depressing with how bad their new material is so far.
before they were face-gnawingly earnest and irritating
e.g. So Here We Are and its wanky little sensitive guitar shapes underpinning Kele's pointless moaning

*robot voice* REE-TTRRO-GRAADE
All the sounds are good
they are just in the wrong places, key and order.
I WOULD DISAGREE
fair doos
I have only played it once all the way thru. It was just annoying I will give it another go soon mind. It has that Prayer vibe to it but not as focused. Fair play to them for trying something new and out of the blue but I just dont think they pulled it off.
it does have a kitchen sink mentality
and a fair bit of cribbage, but i think it all works pretty well considering the disparate parts. And i'd rather it was slightly loopy and stupid than "focussed" (aka normal)
i'm still not totally crazy about it, obvz (tis Bloc Party, after all). But it's actually "quite good". And the slating it's had on here is predictable, to say the least
sure it was bound to get a kicking
I like them myself and happily listen to both their albums.
It might grow on me but right now I'm not sure. First impressions are not promising.
you wrote
noobs. LOL.
Fucking mental
Also kind of amazing because it's so mental and all over the place. I like the horns and grime-y vibe. Terrible chorus thing though.
