I bought Vampire Weekend yesterday for £7 (but from Woolworths :( ), and I like a bunch of recent indie bands:

Black Kids
MGMT
Vampire Weekend
Black Lips

So its only four, but YOU NEVER KNOW. MAYBE MORE WILL FOLLOW!?

ha, what's the reason behind this?

you're gonna love leeds, maybe not my club night if it goes ahead.

Clubnight? Leeds?

Nothing like MGMT?

I'm intrigued.

That said, Vampire Weekend are far better than they should be...

no a pure scuzzy rock n roll night

with some indie pop and hardcore and maybe rap thrown in. we wanna make something new! there's too many "indie electro" nights in leeds.

aren't all of those above bands "indie pop"?

i'm interested though..

no they're pop indie.

big difference.

my mistake!

where do you have in mind?

santiagos

smokestack (formerly the soul circus)
bassment (subculture whatever)

common place at a push.
what do you think would be a good venue?

Never even heard of Smokestack!

Where is it? My clubnight's been rendered homeless since the Atrium shut down, so we're on the hunt for a venue too...

Common Place is so much effort to actually get a night at, what with all the "shadowing" you have to do at other nights beforehand. The Library's also out of the running because of their Nazi door policy.

the library is a terrible venue

because of this. i know so many people who've had problems.

smokestack is down on the bottom of town near nandos. i think there was a fire but its ben refurbished. not sure what they're like for nights and stuff yet, but that's where asbo and sexbeat used to be.
what's your night? i used to like the atrium but it was a bit out of the way.

obvs i'll have to wait 'till i come back to england before i can arrange anything night wise. another 2 months yet :(

I only ever went to one night at the Library

(Don't The Kids...), but people stopped going once the ID checking got too...y'know...enforced.

How big's Smokestack? I'll look into it; otherwise, we were probably pondering Santiagos, though there's already one pretty popular night there that's similar to the one I do, which could be a bit risky. Oversaturation and that...

My night's called With Whom To Dance? - there've only been three of them so far, and they've each had varying degrees of success, so it's probably a good thing that the Atrium's shut down!

i liked don't the kids,

that's one of the nights i knew had problems. and when i went to cursive (it was the opening night), not only was i asked for id, but the bouncer checked my back, my cigarettes and also asked to look at my pupils. that was ridiculous.

i'm on your myspace friends :) one of the nights i've been meaning to go to but my trips home have never worked out so that i can go. i hope you can get a venue and things sorted out. i will bring people!

you mean love is a dog at santiagos? two of our djs for the night used to/run bad taste, did you hear about that?

Fortunately for Don't The Kids

they had Strangeways to fall back on! The Library have turned almost intolerably evil of late; no costumed Otley runs (less of a loss, admittedly) and they once went through every compartment of my bag (and each section of my wallet!) because they thought I had drugs or something. I only wanted to nip in there to go to the loo!

Ooh wonderful! It's not been updated in a while or anything, but whatever. I'm seeing the two people I do the night with at Indietracks festival later this month, so chances are we'll do some brainstorming/planning then. It'd be great if you could make it if/when it all gets sorted out though :-)

Yeah, Love Is A Dog. I've been meaning to go to that for ages, but alas, other stuff's always got in the way. Didn't realise it was the same team who were in charge of Bad Taste - my friends dragged me there on my first night out in Leeds, and it was terrifying; they led me to the Common Place in the dark, and the first thing I saw when I got in there was a clown stripper with an inflatable sheep on his crotch. You don't forget a night like that in a hurry...

their loss though,

nobody will want to put nights on there and they will lose a lot of money.

</3 i can't go to indie tracks fest as i can't afford flights. sigh. have fun though! it will be awesome.

oh no it isn't the same people doing love is a dog, i've been meaning to go as well. just that i meant bad taste was at santiagos as well. it's only harriet who used to do bad taste will help us with our night, she's really proactive when it comes to music! she had a mini rant last time i was home about the state of the music scene in leeds. since i've been gone for one it's changed SO much.

Ahhhh right

Has yr night got a name yet? It's looking likely that Santiagos is going to become the venue where people start running/relocating their nights. No bad thing, I guess!

In terms of the music scene in Leeds, I have no frame of reference other than the past year, but that year has basically revolved around:

Idiots who like the Pigeon Detectives/Wombats (I could hear their Millennium Square show from campus. It was terrifying), The Rosie Taylor Project supporting every band ever (no bad thing, mind), The Lodger (who remain my favourite band in Leeds apart from the Seven Inches)...and that's about it, though by all accounts, The Faversham hasn't changed a bit.

not yet.

some names have been thrown around, ross likes "mixtape" which would be good. we basically want to do what asbo did before it went rubbish. i quite like "summary" but nobody would get the reference and it's quite forgettable.

haha, that's the same only when i was there there was less lad rock and a bit more rocknroll. i used to be able to go out any night of the week but now week nights are just dire. gig wise leeds has got better, but club wise i think it's gone a little bit downhill. the free FR gig for instance was ace. i've only seen pulled apart by horses then the once, but they are arguably my favourite leeds band. i haven't seen the lodger but will try and see them when i return :) i feel a bit behind the times now!

the faversham urgh, just urgh. even as a gig venue it's terrible.

Summary?

Is that a BARR reference? I tried playing "The Song is the Single" at WWTD, but it cleared the floor...and yet when it got played at White Heat, everyone went mental. Leeds...*tuts and shakes head despairingly*

The Lodger aren't massively popular or anything (though they are now signed to Bad Sneakers) - they just tick all of my musical boxes. I've yet to check out PABH (they played the last Nastyfest, but I missed it) - what are they like?

The Faversham is an extremely poorly laid out place; I want to like it, but...no. It can't be done. The best gig I ever saw there was Future of the Left, and that was probably because there were only about 30 people in the audience. Oh, actually I lie - there was a twee-pop alldayer there in Spring, but the best bands (The Deirdres and the Seven Inches) were shoved right at the start of the day, so hardly anyone was there for them, which sucked, because they both deserved to headline.

yes, yes it is! :)

i don't think the leeds crowd would know him, no. hence my hesitance. i so wish somewhere would play him. dancing to BARR would be soooooo good.

PABH are really good and energetic live. kind of the louder sound of my tastes but you should have a look on their myspace or see them for sure. live they are ace.

and yeah i heard about the art of kissing. i think i was around for that weekend but mised it 'cause i was busy or something. can't remember. the dierdres have played carpe diem as well, i'm sure they'll come back and play a bigger venue and audience soon. i was meant to be at the why? gig but apparently that was bad 'cause the venue was a bad choice. so annoyed they cancelled though. i booked my flights around that gig and everything.

lower brigate

it's quite nice. i think it set on fire a while back. the upstairs room smells of hamster cages

Don't let her take over Smokestack.

Its an r&b club. I went on this special weekender they had and danced myself to death. It was full of actua-mods* and they played the best music I've ever heard in Leeds - better even than Mylo DJ on a Saturday night.

False mods:
-Liam Gallagher haircut and or glasses
-Class themselves as 'mod' because they like The Jam and are wearing a tshirt with a roundal on it

Real mods:
-People in suits

rnb can die.

hate hate hate. the best night in leeds at the moment is deffo idioteque.

Brighton Beach can die.

I only needed to go there once to realise how godawful it was. Stylus generally...just...ugh. Some mates of mine run a night called Let's Be Friends, which is probably my favourite night out in Leeds (at the Common Place), but it also happens to be the rival to my clubnight...

i just realised you probably knew the LBF lot

i kinda know malcolm, but not very well! i did make him a mix cd though. that makes us friends right?!

BB i hate SO much, like really really. i went to the nye thing though, there was nothing on this year so i spent it there and it was actually okay. the room downstairs in the town hall is nice.

I've never been.

Don't want to.

Was in LEeds not long ago and saw a poster of Twiggy.

I approached, thinking it would please my 60s obsession and it said "Leeds Premier Mod Night".

WOW. Sounds good... Reading on...

"MUSIC FROM:
THE CHARLATANS
JOY DIVISION
THE KINKS
HAPPY MONDAYS
FRANZ FERDINAND"

Ouch.

it is shit.

in all fairness. don't go.

I like the posters

especially the ones with Kate Jackson's face on them...but that's about it. There's a smaller room where they play obscure Northern Soul 7"s and things, which might be more your sort of thing, but it tends to be populated by the kind of people you've already described you despise...

Oh well.

As long as I can dance, I don't care how bad their falseness is! I must go!

Shut up with your rnb can die.

Do you even know what it is? You've broken my heart!

^^

that !!!!

No reason,

just my music taste is being pleased.

These bands don't seem like 'skinny jeans indie' bands. They seem like MELODY-LOVING DANCE-INDUCING bands, as opposed to bands who are typically English:

- sing in accent
- sing about 'cool' stuff like Joy Division and telling your girlfriend to SOD OFF etc.
- yeah

I know none of them are English,

but that's the general 'indie vibe' I get these days.

And American indie is more often than not, melody-less and Pitchforky.

Just looking at the title of the thread

I'm curious- does this approach to finding dates work?

Oh my lord,

I like all those too! But I've never thought of myself as an indie kid... maybe I am... but maybe I'm not... oh no, oh very no... major identity crisis!

<:-0

Help!

i like black lips

fun band.

Good at Glastonbree.

They're Nuggetsy.

I'll expect you to pay for our first date.

But I promise to kiss you if you do so.

youve got yourself a deal

walk in the park it is.

Mannnnnnnn they arent very good

all very much buzz bands

doesn't matter that they're buzz bands

black lips are 5 albums in

That's why I'm an indie boy again.

Cos they got buzz around em.

The last time I was into a buzz band properly was Klaxons. And by the time their album was out, I'd already abandoned the indie cause.

PS. I still have. :(

:(

Damn. What's happened with us? You started hating me all of a sudden just because I stopped being single on Facefuck. Well you know what?

SCREW YOU!

i love you for always and ever

xx

black lips are fantastic! a cut above most.

black kids are a joke though.

You should have just bought

a Bay City Rollers album. Save yourself a few quid and the embarrassment a few years on when you realize what a horrible mistake this thread is.

don't hold back now

don't know about black kid but the others are fairly good.

plus the boy is stepping out of his comfort zone

don't kick him in the balls for the effort

You are my favorite trap door spider!

: )

The boy can take care of himself rue

I was there when wrighty stalked Brainlove to death...held steadfast to his belief later Oasis albums are good...and gave the social board somebody other than Martbowski to hate...ah, good times. :)

pardon me

I guess that's why the only fights I've ever been in are "other peoples" damn, will I ever learn.

doubt it

So, DiS mythology huh? I see Brainlove on the boards still- is he well mamed?

I didn't really know about Black Kids either.

But the rest are WELL GOOD!!!!

Vampire Weekend are great

if only for being able to post in band into movie threads, Vampire Weekend At Bernie's.

where did my reply go?

anyways only vampire weekend are good and they're not very good.

Check out all the people they rip off though, they're probably more interesting.

I uber-recommend
