Brett Anderson reveals second solo record

Brett Anderson default smaller

Suede vocalist Brett Anderson will release the follow-up to his self-titled solo debut, Wilderness, on September 1.

Digital customers can pick up the album a littler earlier, with it reaching online stores on August 29. Anderson will preview material from Wilderness at a show at London's Mermaid Theatre on Monday, July 7.

Says Anderson of his new album:

“I made this album with the purest of intentions: to create a beautiful suite of songs untethered by second-guessing markets and playlists and music biz bullshit. I have no record company, no publisher and a smaller audience but I have never been more confident and focused about what I am doing as an artist.”

Hear material from Wilderness right now on Anderson's MySpace page.

  • What's happened

to Brett Anderson? *sheds little tear*

  • A second one?!?

How many copies did his first one sell? Is there REALLY a demand??

    • Ah, I've just read. So he doesn't care about demand.

So why bother to release it at all? Why not just sit and play it to yourself at home? The perfect way to feel confident as an artist.

      • a bit like Louis Eliot then...

        v

    • more than the last sonic youth album

but not as much as coldplay

      • :)

That's how I want all record sales to be calculated in the future.

  • so The Tears

    didn't last long.

As it seems to be the trend at the moment, why don't they just reform Suede with the Dog Man Star line-up and make us all very happy.

  • JAG ALERT

  • album sales

Since when does a true artist stop recording when his record sales drop off? Despite some mis-steps along the way Brett Anderson is responsible for some of the greatest music of the last 20 years. I for one hope he never stops recording. Excited for new album.

    • Er

      not completely responsible, no.

      Partly, maybe.

      • This news is two weeks old

But at least he's confident he won't knock out a bunch of sub-Suede demos this time.

  • Poor

    Brett, eh?

    • He really is in the

Wilderness now, huh? But yeah, he definitely still has an audience, Suede had scores of obsessive diehard fans and quite a few are still out there, especially in Europe/Asia etc..

I picked up his last album only recently and really got into it, it's very sad and not so immediate but it keeps the mood thoughout and is more coherent than the albums before. So I still think he's capable of making good music...

  • I'll probably give this a listen

I liked Love Is Dead and the Tears' album had some great tunes on it. Not up to the standard of the first two Suede albums of course, but still decent in their own ways.

  • .

"I have never been more confident and focused about what I am doing as an artist"

yeah, good luck to you Brett. No doubt we'll get rewarded with the same old tales of lonely wives living in concrete streets and lots of "uh-ho's" thrown in to cover up his total lack of lyrical ability.

As far as I'm concerned the last 3 records he put his name to have all been utter shit. Count me out of this one.

    • I try to avoid bitchiness on the web and stick to what I like

but I can't deny that the above pretty much exactly states what's going on in my head when I read about this.

  • The Tears

Apart from a few s0-so tunes and some appalling lyrics, i quite liked The Tears album. Refugees, Autograph, Ghost of You, Apollo 13 were all good songs

  • It's supposed to be surprisingly good

That's according to the folk in the forum on Brett Anderson's website, who admittedly might be obsessively deluded - BUT they were generally critical of both The Tears record and the first solo one, and they're saying this is the best thing he's ever done, including Dog Man Star (praise comes no higher from Suede fans). I'm highly dunious, but I've got my hands on this and will give it a listen tomorrow. I think it's just Brett on piano/acoustic guitar and a cello player.

    • suede were my fave band as a teen. EVER.

couldnt have cared less about him since the 4th suede album. and then i heard a track off this last week and my ears pricked up. it's fantastic. dunno the name of the song though but one of the new trax.

    • Hmm...

...well there's being optimistic about a record then there's being stupid. I don't see how he could conceivably make something as good as Dog Man Star again.

Still the signs are good. I'm not expecting much from this record, but I should think it'll provide some pleasant summer listening, like Coming Up and Here Come The Tears.

      • god, well

Hopefully it will be better than the cringeworthy first effort.
I loved loved loved suede and really did not dig the tears.
Saw brett tour the first album, and on stage he was a realt tit, he had matt osman on bass, and did not even bother to introduce him, just took the applause, and adulation by basking like a foppy cat.

        • he's always been like that

saw him once throwing a mic in the audience in Milan and hitting some punter on the head - he didn't even apologize when the poor guy was rushed off to hospital

I loved Suede too but he's far from being even a decent bloke - I believe musical karma's got him
