Ian Curtis' memorial stone stolen

Sad news. BBC Manchester is reporting that the gravestone of the late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis has been stolen.
The memorial stone, which reads simply "Ian Curtis. 18-5-80. Love Will Tear Us Apart", was stolen from Macclesfield Cemetery, sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.
Cheshire Police are appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts to contact them. Visit their website here.
A police spokesman told the BBC: "There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft.
"This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present."

Jim Morrison's grave in Paris used to have a big stone statue of his head but that went missing loads of times before they decided to just not bother with another replacement.
And as an ex-resident of Macclesfield, I can safely say that about 70% of the town would be willing to nick a headstone for the price of a pint.

I grew up in Macclesfield and love Joy Division but have never felt the urge to make a trip to his gravestone.

and loved Joy Division and you didn't once make a trip to see it, i think that makes you the odd one!

Hmmm, yes well, that's a tricky one to ponder over. Would there be such a JD legacy had Ian not hung himself? But could it ever have been any other way? Was it possible for his life to pan out the way it did, with JD etc, if it wasn't going to end how it did, when it did?
It was through getting into New Order that I first investigated their history, and got into JD, and for sure JD would not have followed the same path NO did.
