After 11 years of toil and trouble, trotting merrily and frequently around this country and beyond, playing to whoever wanted to see them, Biffy Clyro finally wowed the masses with their fourth album, Puzzle.

Their major label debut was an unapologetically commercially-oriented offering and this rankled some of the long-serving hardcore fans that had battled and strived to get as many people to hear this wonderful trio from Ayrshire as possible.

After the stadium-leaning but still dynamic Blackened Sky had hinted at their aspirations, it was Biffy’s second album, The Vertigo Of Bliss which cemented their position as an experimental, quirky band that could still erupt with moments of pop-rock clarity.

If you were a fan then and were still a fan for Infinity Land it’s likely that you really don’t need this singles set. You’ve probably got all the singles sitting on your shelf or lovingly tucked away in a shoebox for a rainy eBay day, but this is still a nice way to chart the band’s progress, if you feel like it.

However, the fact remains that Puzzle sold more copies than the first three albums combined. They have a lot of new fans who will be mighty interested in their new favourite band’s older material.

Whether they found them on Virgin Radio or at a Bon Jovi event is unimportant. The fact remains that Biffy Clyro have released four albums of undeniably beautiful modern rock that is as artful as it is anthemic.

There may well not be anything as catchy and boisterous as star track ‘Glitter & Trauma’ to be found on Puzzle, but lots of ears in America pricked up to the jagged, wholesome tones of Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies and, just like a jaded housewife, those ears might be able to find beauty in ‘G&T’.

It’s a big shame that none of the wonderful b-sides that Biffy became famous for have been included, but the pessimist in me reckons they’re probably being saved for Biffy Clyro: B-Sides 2001–2005, coming to a record shop near you in a year or so.

Even if you are a Biffy fan who has been in it for the long haul, this compilation will only be useful when your iPod fails. And it’s music by Biffy Clyro, so it’s always going to be quite a good listen.

  • Biffy Clyro 6 / 10

why

only 6/10? Nothing in the review points towards this getting such a mediocre score. Odd.

i would KILL for a b-sides album

Biffy have always excelled at doing great b-sides.

As for this, well i don't need it as i pretty much have everything.

oh, and vertigo of bliss - probably one of my favourite albums ever, and certainly the best 2nd album a band has released.

probably not

probably not as good as Beach Boys - Surfin' USA

or De La Soul - De La Soul is Dead

or Beatles - With The Beatles

or Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

or Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

or Joy Division - Closer

but pretty good

You missed Nation Of Millions

Not to mention Millions Now Living...

must be something to do with that "1,000,000" word ;-)

i expected a response like this

i should have said a *recent* band, or perhaps, more accurately, a band i like has released.

yeah the beatles

are pretty rubbish!

fine

a band i like active in the last decade have released.

good enuff??

i'm guessing

because it's not for fans like us because there aren't any b-sides (which is really annoying and a mistake imo)

i hope people pick this up and see how good this band were, but if there's no b-sides its pretty much pointless for anyone who ever liked them in the first place. shame that.

wut?

No b-sides. :(

The lack of B-Sides

isn't good..

Hope For An Angel currently ranks among anything they've ever done for me.

the best Biffy gig

I've ever been to, they did an encore (which they never do, well, never in the 18-odd times I've seen them), and played Hope For An Angel. Amazing.

Artwork is piss,

and I'd really like Asexual Meat Kitchen... can never find it...

it's the bside for

Folding Stars.
And it's not great, Simon's trying to sound like him from the Bronx and failing and him from the Bronx's contribution is the only good thing about it.

the artwork IS awful

but in the pantheon of awful biffy clyro covers it's probably not even in the top 5.

I fail to see how this can be given anythign less than a 9/10

It's a brilliant collection of singles.

I too hope the 'new' fans realise what a fantastic band they've always been, and I hope the B-Sides album comes out soon, that shit will be awesome.

I'm also surprised at there only being 6/10 for this

They might get a bit tedious for the duration of an entire album, but I always found the singles included in this to be pretty sterling stuff.

I'll be buying this

I've turned up to the Biffy party late and this seems a good way of catching up on what I've missed. I agree the review points to a better mark than 6 though.

Biffy have so many good b-sides...

so here is the definitive list of crackers (in order of goodness)...

Bonanzoid Deathgrip
Its Always The Quiet One's
Drown In A Natural Light
Asexual Meat Kitchen
Travis Perkins
And With Scissorkick Is Victorious
Instructio4
Stars And Shites
Breatheher
Do Your Remember What You Came For?
Being Gabriel
The Houses of Roofs
I Hope Your Done

Buddy Holly (Weezer cover)
Take me Out (Franz Cover)

There's a few cracking B-sides from the Puzzle era

A Headline ("it's hip to be square)
Miracle of Survival
Relief or Fight
Coward
Kittens, Cakes and Cuddles
Scared of Lots of Everything
all very good, esp Miracle of Survival

You've missed some

Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Good Practice Makes Permanenet
Waiting For Green/Time Is An Imploding Unit

Bonanzoid Deathgrip is one of their best songs period, can't believe they dropped it from Infinity Land in favour of 'Conceal The Weapons'.

I LIKED THE BSIDES FIRST

I AM THE INDIEST!!!

The only Biffy song I know is And With The Scissorkick...

How indie am I???

(it's on a compilation)

(it's not very good)

(I'll go now. Sorry)

being gabriel

is fucking ACE

what about...

the early stuff? All The Way Down (Chapter 2) is quality!!!

i also must say this deserves more than 6/10

Biffy Clyro are genuinely one of the best British bands in recent years. I'm as disappointed as the next guy that they have become the rock version of Snow Patrol, but this compilation is great. 8/10 at least. Probably 9.

The major downside of the singles album

is that the people who got into them via Puzzle won't get to hear the amazing album tracks like bodies in flight, convex concave and some kind of wizard to name but a few.

I'm figuring Razzle

gave it 6 because it has been released totally against the wishes of the band AND because it's morsal pickings of three terrific albums, which should really be heard in their own right.

But he didn't say any of that up ^ so i can't be sure. But I reckon.

Exactly

He didnt say any of that. It's a poor review, seemingly knocked out in a spare five minutes as some sideways promotion for Thrash Hits. And, oh look, there's the plug at the end…

So this is how DiS ended: in a flurry of inter-site ass fondling with rapidly depleting critique. You're getting big, fella, you're losing your edge.

dunno about the 6

this b-side talk is making me want to listen to breatheher and scissorkick. both ace.
dunno about vertigo being the best 2nd album ever, this is perhaps hyperbole. but it is good, granted
