Looking at old festival line-ups

Is a really funny thing to see how everyone lined up, bands you didn't know at the time etc. etc...

Was just looking at my girlfriends t-shirt with the Reading 2005 Line-up on the back.. On the saturday NME stage The Tears were headling ahead of Babyshambles and Arcade Fire! But who are they?!?!??

Also Artic Monkeys were there on small stage and my favorite band Two Gallants, didn't know they were getting any recognition then.

Anyone else got any good ones?

Er...

The Tears were Bernard Butler and Brett Anderson's band. They were shit.

I went to see The Tears over Foo Fighters

with about 50 other people. I lose.

However I also went to see Arcade Fire that year when all my mates decided Razorlight on the main stage were the better option. the fools!

The year before my mate kept telling me I should go and see Death From Above 1979 on the carling stage with him and I declined..idiot!

Oh and

I missed Interpol play the Carling Stage in 2002 because I was watching The Vines. Massive, epic fail.

i missed the vines

cos i was watching Weezer. Epic Win. although i'm pretty sure i saw interpol that year too

Hmm

Maybe it was someone else then.

I watched Jane's Addiction in the pissing rain. Good times.

Weezer were amazing

Especially when as leaving the stage Rivers went "Enjoy METALLICA!", who weren't playing

Ah, I saw Interpol that year.

I can remember it seeming very dark inside the tent.

white stripes at glastonbury

main stage bright daylight, great performance. The followed this with a headline slot a couple of years later post White Blood Cells

reading 2000 has LOADS

elliott smith played.
bright eyes played somewhere low on the carling stage
black eyed peas headlined the dance stage (!)
dirty three played
elbow opened the carling stage

i was going to say that year

it was a GREAT GREAT GREAT lineup

Reading 2000

Wish I was there!

i was there

i watched Elastica touring The Menace over Graham Coxon touring The Golden D.

*weeps*

Pfft Elastica were brill

Elliot Smith was amazing. Sigh.

I watched

ATDI in the Carling tent over both Elastica and Graham C.

Immense

I was there!

So good... Looking at more recent lineups, there doesn't seem to be anything exciting on the Carling stage.

biggest

Carling crowd ever! I tried climbing up the support ropes on the outside of the tent. I occasionally caught sight of an afro. Then I went to see Beck. Good times :)

the menace

is easily one of the most underrated albums ever. i love it!

I was there

My first and last Reading. The line-up really was fucking good though. All about Grandaddy

That's just scratching the surface

...Trail of Dead, ATD-I, Royal Trux, Ween, The Get Up Kids, SFA above Deftones on the main stage, Queens of the Stone Age beneath Embrace.....

I wish I could have gone to that one.

Royal Trux

pulled out, replaced by Clinic.

I also saw Brassy play to about 4 people because Limp Bizkit were on at the same time. LOLZ.

i saw

sfa, trail of dead, qotsa, beck and gomez that day.

as well as a little bit of idlewild, deftones, gorkys...

Was that the time QOTSA

did an encore? That was an absolutely immense set.

I think that was the first time I saw Trail of Dead.

i was at

that reading fest, superb line up that one was! muse headlined one of the tents too, at the drive in were ace , as were queens of the stone age, they threw out loadsa qotsa boxes of matches. trail of dead were really good, as were rage against the machine and elliot smith :) wasnt that the year oasis played though and made it rain? i watched muse instead in a tent! haha fuckin oasis! grr

Lift to Experience @ Reading

i keep saying it, but i dont want to believe they were.

I was at that show. it was pretty amazing

Josh ended the set holding a skull at arms length over the crowd.

I hate looking back at old festival line ups

"Why did I miss Interpol to watch The Offspring?!"

I was thinking the exact same thing...

about Reading 2005. Was standing behind someone at a gig recently who was wearing a Reading '05 t-shirt with the line-up on the back. Provided much conversation fuel for a good half an hour.

British Sea Power, Bloc Party, Sons and Daughters, lemon Jelly, lcd soundsystem, test icicles, hot chip playing on the smaller stages. And I missed it :(

Reading 05 was a pretty good year

Best of all was Be Your Own Pet on the Carling stage with Jemina puking all over the shop...

Hot Chip, back when they were a foursome, in the Dance tent with just keyboards and no live instruments... followed by Blackalicious and M.I.A. ... ahhh... and I met a lovely girl on that day in an Unknown Pleasures t-shirt. Happy days. The only thing I saw on the main stage that weekend was Pixies.

yep

'05 was pretty good. Arcade Fire in the RAdio 1 tent stole the whole weekend though

I remember sitting in the dance tent with a watermelon whilst hot chip were on... sunday night in the radio 1 tent was sweet (BSP/LCD/Futureheads/Bloc Party with the guy climbing the poles)

although Coxon died a bit on the mainstage compared to the set in the tent in 04 which was amazing. Elbow were good and The Cooper Temple Clause were shit trying out the stuff that someday eventually made that third record

Oh yeah, the climbing guy

I liked it when Kele got politely indignant ("This is the gig of our career, please don't ruin it"), followed by the whole crowd shouting "JUMP!". Ho ho ho.

Yeah, Coxon was a bit buried. But he came on to play for Charlotte Hatherley in the Carling tent later. That was wicked.

Coxon in 04

it was all about Coxon in '04. Soulwax, SFA and then Graham headlining while the Darkness were on and playing early stuff and Happiness In Magazines. There was this point where all of The Darkness' fireworks went off and you could see them through then tent... then there was a massive "Graham graham graham" chant and a killer version of "Thats When I Reach For My Revolver". Good times

Yes!

And the chants of 'Fuck The Darkness!'

Truly wonderful gig, SFA and Soulwax beforehand were incredible too.

That was my first ever day at a festival.

I remember watching Keane in the Carling tent

at Reading in 2003, at the back. I asked some bloke who it was, he said "Keane, they're going to be massive". I think I left after one song...

I saw Kaiser Chiefs in 2004

Walked away after two songs.

I missed Rival Schools/Alec Empire/Icarus Line

at Reading in 2002 and watched The Hives & The Bouncing Souls instead. (In my defence, I'd not heard of Rival Schools, Alec, Icarus.)

FAIL

although Alec Empire had really bad sound as I recall and Rival Schools were boring.

Yeah, I heard he tried to

make as much noise and possible and nearly blew up the sound system or something and was asked to leave. Bit chaotic apparently. The Hives were well good though.

i thought that alec empires set that year was ace

jsut people were screaming for the vocals to be turned up as u couldnt hear them over the noise haha plus he had 2 drummers to add to the noise! youre right though, rival schools were boring as hell that year

yeah

I remember that show, his mic wasn't turned on until about the 3rd song. It was quite embarassing.

I just found out today

That I saw Greenday at T in the P 05 over Art Brut, I cried a little.

why?

that seems like a fairly solid decision

Green Day >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Art Brut.

Good decision. It's not like Art Brut don't tour loads anyway.

Don't do it!

Recently found out I missed Jeff Buckley and Soundgarden at Reading 95 :o(

Big bands I saw at Leeds

in small tents before they were big.

Death Cab in about 2001 ?!?
Interpol
Bloc Party
Arctic Monkeys
Franz Ferdinand
Bright Eyes

Didnt think much of any of them at the time, apart from Death Cab. Shows what I know.

Here's

Quite a good Reading archive

http://www.readingmuseum.org.uk/collections/festival/search.asp

My first Reading was 91 - Neds Atomic Dustbin were headliners!

Been in 91, 92, 94, 95, 99, 01, 02, 05

Doubt I'll go again though, the campsite is a nightmare

^5

'94 was a good vintage.

06 indian suummer

glasvegas , css , pigeon detectives and dananananaykroyd all playing small stages
but the only band i saw was pigeon dectives
gutted

2004 Reading

Bloc Party were the first band on on the Carling Stage on the sunday... I was meaning to watch them but I didnt wake up in time.
Devendra Banhart also played the Carling Stage and I never went, I still have my timetable thing, there were a few bands I now like that I didnt know of back then. Annoying

I saw Devendra Banhart that year

he only played for about 15 minutes but it was great.

Ginger Ninja

Thanks for that archive thing... made me well angry now haha.

Reading 2004.. Carling Stage, The Shins, The Cribs, Yourcodenameis:Milo, Secret, TV On The Radio, McLusky.

gay

..

This is the best thread I've ever done! check out www.myspace.com/thetelegrams

yep, a promoting machine... : - )

www.myspace.com/goddontlikeit !!

I think they were promoted to the R1 stage

still at about first or second thing on and it was pretty full, and was good fun. Saw franz in the carling tent in about 2003 and that was really good. They were followed by Razorlight who were also pretty good.

ATP 2000

I missed Trail Of Dead's UK debut even though I can't remember what I saw instead. Sophia maybe?

All my mates who did see ToD kept raving about them and how amazing they were. They were right of course.

Also, I didn't see Godspeed as they clashed with Sonic Youth headlining on Saturday night. SY were truly awful that night.

Friday at Reading 1995 was superb............

SMASHING PUMPKINS (at their peak!),

GREEN DAY,

HOLE(Kurt's suicide note read out to the crowd, Courtney repeatedly showing us her flange and slagging off Corgan),

TEENAGE FANCLUB

BECK

dEUS

JULIANA HATFIELD (The Lemonheads)

CHINA DRUM

Sunday was as good, if not better........

NEIL YOUNG

SOUNDGARDEN

PAVEMENT

MUDHONEY

BUFFALO TOM

BABES IN TOYLAND (Alright, so it wasn't all good!)

WHITE ZOMBIE

BLIND MELON

PENNYWISE.

Aye, Reading 95 was superb

I still have the programme!

I was there......

Didn't Pennywise order a stage invasion, and only about 10 people were left in the crowd after everybody dived on the stage?

94 was better though

coldplay

were first on the new bands stage at glasto in 99 - a full year before yellow. doves and qotsa were alo early on the other stage that year

my only regret

was not seeing South at Gig On The Green about 10 years ago, I did however see The White Stripes, Moldy Peaches and The Strokes at their prime.

Reading 2001

At the time i was slightly oblivious of the fact that these bands are so so good:

Evan Dando
Teenage Fanclub
Mogwai
Hefner
Folk Implosion
Guided By Voices
Gorkys Zygotic Mynci
Stephen Malmkus
Arab Strap
Richard Hawley
Lift To Experience

yeah my mate has the massive poster of that lineup on his wall

seriously puts recent lineups to shame.

teenage fanclub + mogwai on the radio one stage = omg

yes!

i saw the second half of mogwai that year, my first ecperience of them, blew my tits off.. trouble was i missed the first half of their set as i was watching lostprophets (though they were amazing at the time)

Reading 89

New Order
My Bloody Valentine
Spacemen 3
The Sugarcubes
Loop
Butthole Surfers
The Pogues
The Wonder Stuff
The House Of Love
Pop Will Eat Itself

My first ever festival!

so many late90s highlights.

I remember seeing yo la tengo open proceedings on the second stage one year. can't remember what year but it was promoting 'I can hear the heart...'

also:

pavement circa 'wowee zowee' following beck who was on the main stage about 11am, I swear.

atari teenage riot followed by sleater-kinney at stupid o'clock too.

shellac at phoenix 1994. second UK gig ever and tight as a drum even then.

GREAT DAYZ obv.

oh

wait, ATR on the mainstage Reading was the best show I've seen at that festival. When the security had to basically drag Alec Empire off stage as they over-ran dramatically as the second?! band on.
