What's the etiquette on this?

This thread's inspired by the large percentage of the crowd at the New York Dolls' gig in Glasgow last Sunday wearing New York Dolls tee shirts.

Is it better or worse than wearing a band tee of a differant band?

And is it more acceptable for some bands than others?

the bigger the band

the more acceptable it is, it would seem.

yep

the bigger the band and the older the t-shirt the more acceptable.

Buying a tshirt from the merch and putting it straight on over your other clothes will always be lame.

yeah

i just bought a replacement Motorhead tshirt for when my one wears out in a couple of years

preparation

motorhead shirts

are always acceptable - they're too iconic not to be, you might as well ban denim before them at proper rock shows.

Motorhead T Shirts

Are so often completely unacceptable. The amount of people who wear them and actually have no Motorhead records or would never listen to anything like that is ridiculous.

was going to be smug

and agree about the -buy a t-shirt on entering the venue and put it straight on- people until I remembered I'd done it once. Used to have a decent New Order t-shirt that I've probably worn to a few gigs, though none of their own.

...

if you buy i
a tshirt at a gig you might as well put it on because its just gonna get awkward otherwise,

I wouldn't

I would however wear a band t-shirt of another band to a gig.
I would feel to weird - like a saddo groupie to wear the band that was playing's shirt!

the official etiquette

is to wear the t-shirt of a band exist in a similar sonic realm but that aren't as well known.

Oh really?

I've always worn t-shirts of completely different bands. Don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

i just wear ryan adams shirts

to everything.

never ever ever acceptable

wearing another bands t-shirt is more than acceptable.

only acceptable for metal

and sometimes, with the classics, mandatory. i'd never see iron maiden without a maiden shirt.

I only have one Band T

and thats At The Drive In but I have never seen them and now that Tshirt is so fucked I dont really ware it anymore.

I ware my Acid House tshirt to quite a few gigs be it rock/hiphop/indie/dance what ever, I LOVE ACID!

acid

is good. at the drive in good... both `aceptable!

"........."

who cares if people wear band t-shirts to a gig or not. they are there to enjoy the music it doesnt matter how fashionable they are to other people

yes and no

if you go to the gig already wearing a tshirt of the band you're going to see then that is always lame.

however if you go to the gig and buy a tshirt when you get there then you can put it on over whatever you have already got on because thats just common sense, saves you carrying around/losing the £10++ tshirt you just bought

note: these rules don't seem to apply to gigs for bands of legendary status where everyone is there to love it and it isnt a fashion parade

Just wear whatever you like would be my advice

You have the freedom to wear what you want.

I can't see any reason not to wear a foos t-shirt to a foo's gig, for example. Also at said gig you could wear a t-shirt of another band, it's your choice.

Nah,

you've gotta wear a band tee of a completely different style to show your eclectic taste. Same reason I wear my Sly Stone shirt to rock clubs, innit?

There is an exception to all

rules governing band t Shirt conventions:
"Youthmovies" t shirt.

I tend to go with

the thought that as long as you're not a total cunt you can wear whatever the damn well you please at a gig. As long as you're enjoying yourself and you ain't banging into me spilling my pint you can dress up as Coco the Clown, makes no odds to me.

does it really matter?

if i have the band t-shirt i might wear it but it really depends
does anyone actually really care?

Oh it's totally way not cool dude.

The whole point of being at a gig is showing that you'd rather be at another one. You watch the band and nod discerningly and fill in a well considered form at the end criticising the band with a little comments section at the bottom. When I saw Radiohead I wore my Rumpled Thrumples t shirt and on the form wrote "You've got some good songs radiohead but not enough to really move me. Well done though, Radiohead. Good job".

that was the first thing that came to mind

I haven't seen that in yonks! Thanks.

HURRICANE #1

amazing.

some of these comments

are like a geekier indie version of American Psycho

Ha ha ha ha

Hit the nail on the head mon ami.

NO!

never ever do it. dont even wear something related to the band that gets people to chin stroke. just dont do it. grow up

I saw a guy wearing a No Age shirt at Radiohead on Tuesday

I thought; "he looks cool, I want to ask him where he got his shirt".
So clearly, wearing other band's t-shirts is the way to go.

exactly

you're already at the band. you have that credibility. that's safe. but everyone has that because they're there. so you need to UP THE ANTE

Personally I don't tend to an awful lot, unless it's a special occasion or summat.

I just picked up on this and thought DiS would likely have some opinions on the matter.

I rarely wear band tees anyway.

i know people do, of course they do

it's just that i've never been one to bother, unless like you say it's a special occasion.

No, not ever

Even if you buy a tshirt at the merch stand, put it on *under* what you've already got on.

Basically you should be doing everything to distance yourselves from the people who're wearing a tshirt for the tour 5 years ago. I LIKED THEM FIRST, YOU AREN'T ALLOWED TO STAND INFRONT OF ME!

Stiff Records t shirts

are now going to become the next Ramones/Motorhead t shirts, as in people wearing them who have never heard any of the music. Its upsetting... ;(

Razorlight's drummer

is wearing one on their last album cover, although you can only really make out what it is on blown up poster/vinyl versions of the sleeve. You'd somehow like to imagine it was chosen for the music rather than by the stylist (or his smuggling a rude word onto the cover of an album primarily sold in Tesco's), and after that album of his it might well have been.

wearing a band tee

is lame. if you arrived wearing it, if you purchased one and put it on. regardless it's lame
play it safe d00ds and don't bother

influencial bands are acceptable t shirts

the more influencial the band on the t shirt of the current gig is accepted

99.9%

Of the shirts I own are band t-shirts, so when im at a gig i always were one. Just wear whatever you want...

BUT, a t-shirt over a t-shirt does look a bit funny when you buy one from a merch stand haha.

Do you remember 1993 when

everyone at any gig ever was wearing a Carter or a Levellers tee? They were dark, dark days.

Out of interest

if people do buy their tshirt at the start of a gig, what do they do with them if they're not wearing it?

I'm averse to holding stuff during gigs or overstuffing my pockets you see.
