give me some good basic American indie rock

None of this Times New Viking shit.

Basic straight up stuff. Anything from the first Meneguar record to jam like Built to Spill.

There must be some good new bands doing this sort of thing, yes? Say there is?

  • nickelback?

sorry i dont understand what you mean

    • OKAY THANKS DONT WASTE YR TIME THN

      • but nickelback is basic american indie rock non?

        • "Anything from the first Meneguar record to jam like Built to Spill."

          • never heard either of those bands

            • Okay!

Have you got enough points from being REALLY FUNNY yet? Feel free to be REALLY FUNNY a bit more if you want. Ta.

              • :D

listen to Hope And Adams by Wheat, it's gorgeous.

Also Afghan Whigs and Yo La Tengo if you're not already familiar.

PS Where do I start with Meneguar?

                • I Was Born at Night!

                  Total perfection! Gettttt iiittt!

I've not heard Wheat or Afghan Whigs, so i'll get onto those. I think i have some YLT on my external harddrive.... which i've still not got round to listening to!

                  • ok

cheers, I'll have a go on soulseek.

Gentlemen is the place to start with the Afghan Whigs by the way. AWESOME album.

              • what are you talking about?

you asked a question.i tried to answer it.if ive never heard either of those bands how am i supposed to know what to answer.you asked for basic american rock.nickelback are surely basic american rock?

                • nickelback are canadian, surely?

                • no, he said "American indie rock"

                  and then quoted some bands.

perhaps, rather than saying something even you were aware was a bit stupid and then defending this over and over, you should've just looked up the bands he mentioned to see what he meant?

                • you realise that you don't have to post in every thread,

don't you? if you don't have any idea what he's talking about, then just don't post.

        • Nickelback are Canadian

          FAIL

          • Nickleback's failure knows no borders

              <3

    • I've got Jawbox and Owls.

I'll check the rest out though!

I'm looking for something a bit more scrappy than Jawbox and Owls though....

  • Tiger Bear Wolf

Except it's more garage rock. Is that okay?

  • Oxford Collapse

To me they're textbook 'American indie rock'.

    • they are

    • I Agree

You can't get much more straightforward about indie rock than them.

  • Have A Look At:

Not sure how relevent these are (seeing as their not all american?), but off the top of my head, definetly check out...

    AMERICAN:
    Abe Vigoda
    No Age
    Parts And Labor
    No Knife
    Health
    Marnie Stern
    Mass Movement Of The Moth

    NOT AMERICAN:
    Action Beat
    JR EWING
    Cats And Cats And Cats
    Pulled Apart By Horses
    Riotmen
    Charlottefield
    Lakes

let me know if you like any of them, and i can give you hints on Albums and similar bands :)

    • Marnie Stern, No Age and Health are not basic indie rock

    • Thanks!

I've heard most of them. Parts and Labour are great! Not heard Abe Vigoda, so i'll check them out.

    • JR Ewing are amazing

      And sorely missed.

    • HEALTH?

      No Age? Abe Vigoda?

No, that would would categorized under "noise punk".

Not exactly basic stuff, still great music though.

    Heavy Vegetable
    P.E.E
    The Weakerthans
    Thingy
    Japanther
    Karate
    Maritime
Mock Orange (later stuff is pretty straightforward)
Rooney (Fucking terrible name, but it's pretty wholesome Cars/Weezer type stuff, the 1st record is great)
    Waxwing

    • good call

on Earlimart and The Weakerthans. Though I suspect the latter are Canadian

      • Doesn't have to be American!

I just meant that kind of sound. Perhaps i should have put a better description.

      • Argh

        Good point!

    • Got all those :'[[[[[[[[ !!!!!

      • Tiger Bear Wolf?

        Archers of Loaf? Yeah?

My net is being so slow *SAD FACE*

          • You were ignoring me :'(

Having read your subsequent posts, Tiger Bear Wolf are definitely, definitely, definitely what you want. Maybe.

            • I WASN'T <33333!!!

I have the tiger bear wolf myspace up, but it's taking YEARS to play. Shitty connection just now, innit :[

      • What P.E.E records do you have?

If you don't have The Roaring Mechanism then you NEED it. It's bloody incredble.

        • That's the only one i have!

  • Swearing at Motorists?

  • It's got to be

'Gimme Indie Rock' by Sebadoh, surely?

I guess that's the type of stuff i'm looking for! There's a lot of good stuff in the thread so far. I'll post up what i liked / dislike when my shitty internet decides to stop cutting out.

  • The Ponys

Celebration Castle and Laced with Romance. They's fantabulous.

  • Marlvrum if you are dissapointed by Times New Viking

but still like the idea of a noisy distorted band
    may i recommend
    Coachwhips - Bangers Vs Fuckers

    its a treat

  • i'm putting on a gig

showcasing the leading under the radar British exponents of American indie-rock on August 3rd at The Windmill in Brixton. Total self-promotion, but if ever there was a legitimate opportunity for a JAG then this is it. As far as American early 90's sounding indie rock, it doesn't get much better than this in Britain right now.

As an added twist, each band will be doing at least two covers by certain hereos of the era to go with their own songs.

Stuffy and The Fuses as Pixes - www.myspace.com/stuffythefuses

4 or 5 Magicians as Guided By Voices - www.myspace.com/4or5magicians

Giant Robot and The City of Tokyo as Archers of Loaf - www.myspace.com/giantrobotiii

Pale Man Made as Sonic Youth - www.myspace.com/palemanmade

Favours For Sailors as Weezer - www.myspace.com/favours4sailors

Dutch Husband as Sebadoh - www.myspace.com/dutchhusband1

Hour Hands as Built to Spill - www.myspace.com/hourhandsmusic

Plus a Special Guest headliner as The Modern Lovers.

I have used this as an opportunity to plug the gig, but all seven bands are awesome, and all pretty much exactly what you appear to be looking for, and you should check them all out.

    Bet you don't.

    • Headliner's confirmed now then?

      • no

i should have written "probably". If he doesn't confirm, I will do an acoustic set of assorted classics as first on. Or get someone to be The Replacements, haha!

        • "Or get someone to be The Replacements"

          hello

        • drunk, sloppy band needed in london, stat!

(just put the bit about needing to be incredible in small print)

  • Starflyer 59

    Genghis Tron iyl desmemberment plan

    • Some of these have been hinted at above...

Here's a few personal favourites. All pretty old-school, all American just because that's what I listened to when I was 15.

Archers of Loaf - Icky Metal
      Superchunk - On The Mouth
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousands (or the best of...)
      Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted
The Replacements - Let It Be
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
Husker Du - New Day Rising
      X - Los Angeles
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
Built To Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love

      • Thanks....but...

"here must be some good new bands doing this sort of thing, yes?"

        NEW BANDS :D !

  • how about

    Constantines?

    • Collective Soul
