Who actually cares about this band anymore?
They're not very current and surely they're reunion isn't a big enough deal to really justify their place on the bill tonight?

* their, this or the reunion
not they're
were they on the bill
as haggard smack addicts?
yeah, they should just go away.
I dont think Glasto
has ever been a festival for a upfront with the times fesival goer has it so they might go down a storm.
I have never cared for them myself let alone now.
they're not particularly
interesting or have the same impact that they used to, but i bet you know most of their songs, as will the crowd. so i think it makes sense.
agreed
first album is excellent, second album is very good though.
I remember watching them at glastonbury 95,one of my highlights.
I would know a few yeah
Drugs dont work, lucky man, that other one hehe
I dont think I have heard any of their other stuff to my knowledge
The Verve ATM
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
shit
shit shit shit
I fucking hate them now...
but have got to say just got in and its nice to hear Life's an Ocean. I really like they're old stuff.
Well Justified
Wish i could say the same about J-Zee.
Difference is the Verve have originality and longevity. The songs still sound as great now as they did in 90's.Are there many band's of today's current crop that you will be say that about in 15 years ?
hahaha
'originality'
A storm in heaven is a great album.
But apart from that I agree with you.
A Northern Soul
is good too. (Storm in Heaven is my fav tho)
But i feel like taking back that comment now he's started fucking RAPPING over it. C**K.
It's good in HD though.
Just with the sound off.
I think they're catering for the people in the crowd who are garried up.
sorry i like them
and dont give a toss for anyone elses opinion on them.
perhaps
Sunn o))) or Neutral Milk Hotel should have been headlining instead? :)
Neutral Milk Hotel reforming
would totally be good enough to headline Glastonbury
onstage mental breakdowns
would make for great live tv tbf.
Not twice in two days, though
No they wouldn't
Boring hippy crap that no-one outside a particular loathsome group of people will ever have heard on. I'd rather hear Richard bang on about the mystical universe and religion any day of the week, rather than some dopey American singing about Anne Frank. If you're not strong enough to keep your mind in check, then what's the point?

In the case of NMH
I totally agree. Eugh.
i was being sarcastic
about Neutral Milk Hotel. Saw the BBC coverage of the Verve and i thought they rocked.
Oh yeah I know man
And I'm partial to a bit of NMH at times, but I am at odds with the majority of their fanbase - ie, losers.
^this
a voice of reason. why that dire thing is listed as an indie sacred cow, I'll never know.
sarcasm?
well that's a disappointment.
I like them!!
I think you interpreted what I said as in insult, definitely wasn't.
horrible, horrible band
Why does Ashcroft...
...insist on singing a line from each song to introduce it?
McCabe was always the star
as i wrote in the other Verve thread, without his guitar playing, that band would be nothing.
Because it is
northern whit.
his lyrics are too good
to be contained within the confines of a mere song
probably
The most annoying thing about this Glastonbury
has been finding this on the BBC website:
"** Leonard Cohen has chosen not to be recorded for TV or radio on his UK tour **"
Thus ruining any potential enjoyment I may have of tonight's coverage. Doomed to The Verve, Mark Ronson and the Zutons, we shall doubtless be...
Well thats BS
Seeing a few songs from him would have got me excited for Benicassim.
Oh the monkey noises song is on now...
"** Leonard Cohen has chosen not to be recorded for TV or radio on his UK tour **"
balls to this then, he's the only reason I was sticking with the highlights tonight.
Innit :(
shit.....
I was really looking forward to seeing his set.
never really had a problem with The Verve
but they're pretty underwhelming live, Ashcroft comes across as a tosser as well.
i just turned on bbc
and my tv commit suicide
I think they've been great.
I don't understand why people here find them so offensive.
Yeah, they've been alright.
Although a bit hit and miss. Some of the songs off Urban Hymns have bored me to death, ie Sonnet.
I'd just like to point out
that my above post was posted before they played their new single.
it sounds like U2
but i must be one of the few people on this board that like U2. i'm curious to hear what the rest of the album is like. Urban Hymns had some great songs on but a few weak songs too.
I thought they were good
it's just unfortunate that they're obliged to play 'History' and the rubbish songs of Urban Hymns. I'm fairly sure they'd love to play the good songs off A Storm In Heaven and A Northern Soul but the lacklusture reaction from the crowd during 'Life's An Ocean' probably means they will be playing 'The Drugs Don't Work' endlessly forevermore. :(
Still, it wasn't bad by any means. I just wish it was 1994 and they were playing 15 minute versions of 'Gravity Grave'. <3 <3 <3
They are not obliged
to play anything. No ones holding a gun to their heads.
They're so irrelevant
The thought of the culmination of a festival experience being a singalong of 'The Drugs Dont Work' or one of their other bland songs, is just down right depressing.
They're such a weak headliner.
Verve
I would not have had them headlining either but I got the old shiver down me spine when Bittersweet Symphony came on. They are definitely a better bet for headlining than any of the current indie crop. I think Eavis has done all right with his headliners all things considering.
What was that Vampire Weekend thing when they asked all the crowd to make triangles with their hands? Was that Climie Fisher's daughter singing in the studio with Mark Ratciffe? She was ace. Why don't they just sack Phil Jupitus?
Lastly, I'm very jealous of everyone who
went to Glastonbury, all in all amongst the dross they had loads of great stuff this year as ever.
^ hmmm shows how much you know
weak headliner? Thats fighting talk in my book.
they really are though
'The Drugs Don't Work' represents about 1/10
of their back catalogue. Don't judge them on that song, maaaaaaan.
the rest is blue collar, blue eyed english psychedelic funk
Poor old N McCabe...
..he's a love.
What did they play
in the end?
Oh, not to worry,
I found the setlist:
1. This Is Music
2. Sonnet
3. Space And Time
4. Sit And Wonder
5. History
6. Life’s An Ocean
7. Velvet Morning
8. Rolling People
9. Drugs Don’t Work
10. Lucky Man
11. Bitter Sweet Symphony
12. Love Is Noise
Not so bad, at least they acknowledged 'A Northern Soul', and those are pretty much the strongest songs from 'Urban Hymns' (it's always a mystery to me why they released 'Sonnet' as a single and not 'Space & Time' - 'Sonnet' is horrid, 'Space & Time' is ace).
No 'Gravity Grave', though, which is a shame.
I make no apology for loving The Verve.
Very Urban Hymns heavy
though and nothing from A Storm In Heaven or indeed their first five singles and EPs!
I've long since given up
on them playing 'Star Sail' or 'Slide Away' ever again. Has DiS heard the new album yet, or are you Not As Worthy As NME?
I haven't had a copy
Can't speak for any of the London based people though.
I hope it's good.
But I've no real expectations of it so I can't be disappointed. Anyway, they've already changed my life once so I can't begrudge them a shoddy album or two.
I don't get why they don't play Slide Away though.
It's pretty short and sweet. Would go down a treat too.
i still love northern soul
but there new single is terrible
