The crowd sang along rather than pissing their pants. Still, you can't buy a smart crowd. Well, Jay-Z probably could, actually.
AC/DC riffin

I got one thing to say to you...
I GOT 99 Problems...

finally
someone publical humiliated the stupid jumped up prick.
As Guy Garvey said earlier, i bet he regrets saying what he did.
WHAT DID HE SAY?
^This
I don't think he said anything
it's just down to the fact that he is putting on a show, and showing up the bland indie bands with silly haircuts.
this is
the only time I've watched the highlights this weekend and wanted to be there. But I'm seeing him Thursday so that soon passed.
how much were tickets?

THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!
OH MY GOD HE SAID THAT JUST AS I TYPED IT! :D

This is one of the great Glastonbury performances
I have never listened to Jay-Z before but this has totally destroyed all the MOR Indie acts.
Im with you
he is wippin out some party jams and uped the energy by at least a milli
THIS IS TOO GOOD
It's depressing looking at that crowd though, I mean, not saying anything about the demographic as I'm obviously not one to speak, but just the fact that at least half the people there clearly don't give a shit about Jay Z or rap music.
surely thats a good thing
he is trying to reach a new audience, and he may very well be suceeding
Yeah fair point
It's just a shame that I'm missing it live just cos it's at shitting Glastonbury.
THIS IS SO GOOD
wonder how the verve can follow this
tomorrow night
probibly come out
and play run of the mill osais cover versons then leave
does anyone think
verve are another really odd choice for headlining slot?
very odd
they don't seem big enough or current enough, just a band that were popular ten years ago that have reformed to a ripple of interest.
Well, considering
the first two of the three, supposidly, controversial mainstage headliners have been spot on so far, possibly not?
True
.
yep
i don't think they're "classic" enough to be able to just walk into the slot and they're not current enough at the moment to justify taking it the way someone like Kings of Leon or White Stripes might get it.
yep
i don't think they're "classic" enough to be able to just walk into the slot and they're not current enough at the moment to justify taking it the way someone like Kings of Leon or White Stripes might get it.
hahaha!

That Danger Mouse mash-up between The Beatles' White Album and Jay Z's Black Album is one of the best things I've ever heard.
I have been randomly looking for that

I dunno but
think my interest and enthusiasm for this set is waning
It's just a dip for the middle section
All sets have it. It's still 10x better than anything else at that festival.
hang in there
he will whip out more party tunes definatly

impressive live
Annie

a trick missed surely?
no need, he's proved his point!
yeah
fair point.
no tricks no drama just great music
apart from the intro, but that was necessary
the intro
was well funny. His face was brilliant he had a right smirk on.
^This, completely
this is great stuff
he's really pulling it off. think the eavis' may be forgiven.
Ace set
:) I wasnt expecting to enjoy it so much but he freakin rocked it what a legend.
I LOVE HIM
general
*puts black album on
:)
I was excited to see the set
but that was far better than I imagined. I'm all happy and hyper now.
Very very
good.
It was all undoubtedly aided by the pre-show hating though.
Hope Noel Gallacher is squirming in his seat.
That was genuinely exceptional.
Point well and truly proved, methinks.
Absolutely
and completely fucking incredible.
Did he end up playing 'Hard Knocked Life''?
23.56
he played that yep
Fantastic
I look forward to finding a clip on YouTube in coming days.
I need
a bootleg of this set
all on the BBC iPlayer
Full set methinks. Go to the Glastonbury section of the Beeb's site, all there.
all in all
it was very good. the political free styling was a bit out of place at a festival, but the cockney american boy freestyling made up for it.
wrightylew still wishes it had been Dave Gilmour headlining
Shit, I missed this
I've been listening to Jigga all day too. Is it on the iPlayer?
Not yet I dont think
it might be some time though, it was played in full on BBC3.
Frick on a stick
I hope they put it on by the morning. I can watch it while I'm eating my cereal!
Oh my god!
I'm not long home, Jay-Z is on the interactive service and he's just doing it! Fair play to him - what i'm watching is awesome........
I've said it on other posts on DiS before, I've no idea why people have been so against him playing Glastonbury, he is the biggest 'commercial' name in hip-hop bar maybe one or two others (possibly Kanye, probably Eminem if he ever comes back) but why were people so against him?
This is up there with other Sat night headliners in the past....
He is worthy.....
Oh yeah, and...
He's just doing 'I Just Want You To Love Me (Give It To Me)' and it made me think....
Top tune...and....
The man is worth millions, so...
Why is he doing Glastonbury?
He doesn't need the money (you get about £150K tops as a headliner, which compared to other festivals is peanuts....)
He doesn't need the TV exposure (because he is (sometimes) on TV ads.....
I know....
It's because he is up there with the best, with the big headliners, but many people doubted him.....
Check the BBC interactive feeds out - he's doing it!
This is as good as Radiohead in '97 and '03, but the indie kids can't/won't handle it.....
DiScus!
The Irony Wasn't Lost
J.Z is a genius. He kicked off with Wonderwall in irony, which, ironically turned out to be the best track of his set,DOUBLE IRONY,WOW.
Nothing i havent heard done better by The Beastie Boys decades ago.Low point of his set was rapping over Bloody Sunday,NOOOOOOOOOOO !!!.
His accapella rapping is good but even that is spoilt by blatent political statements that everyone is 'supposed' to transpire to.
Zane Lowe, hang your head in shame,by praising the set you now have lost not only weight but your credibility.
For me another american artists should have headlined, the best artists to play festival so far, Kings Of Leon.
One word to describe Jay Z headlining ,CRINGEWORTHY.
The Beastie Boys of course being the all time acme of serious rap
Zane Lowe
of course being full to the brim with credibility!
Sorry Scouseblade...
you are talking shit in my opinion.....
you can't compare Kings Of Leon to Jay-Z....
they both do what they do....
if you prefer KOL to Jay-Z, fair-do's.
But, Jay-Z is holding is own and you can't deny the man that.....
Can you?
Or do you only just like white-man indie-rock?
Or do you want to embrace everything else that is out there.....
zane lowe may be a cock...
but let me know of another 'mainstream' radio dj that plays new stuff from all genres of music...?
is it jo whiley?
no...
is it edith bowman?
no...
is it xfm....?
not during the day....
is it 6Music...
perhaps.....
we can't choose who we want to play new stuff, but zane lowe is not the enemy.....
i don't like him, but at least he tries.....
oh, and also..
is jay-Z the first non-white artist to headline the pyramid stage?
if he is, then is that not a good thing?
if i am missing something, then please let me know....
but i thought glastonbury was all about all encompassing music and arts tastes.....
no?
Where's JAY Z on the iplayer?
Or am i just blind?
Hmmm
Perhaps they should've hired the Beastie Boys to play instead, to please the likes of you.
After all, their last album (proper), To the 5 Boroughs, wasn't in the slightest bit political
I can't believe you all thought this was good
him playing wonderwall was completely cringey and although he should'ave accomodated the glasto crowd he shouldn't have pandered to them. He himself was good but the whole thing was pretty sad.
People having fun on a Saturday night
yeah, real sad
Hey, guess who missed the point of what I just wrote?
I can't bear the suspense, it was YOU.
sad?
he didn't pander....
he played a saturday night set like he knows how to.....
i tell you what sad is, having oasis play glastonbury on a saturday night....
how we would all sing along to 'wonderwall' then, huh?
I just watched this in full
on the BBC iPlayer, and I thought he was AMAZING! Jigga won over all the haters, mocked Noel Gallagher and got the crowd in gear all at the same time. All the songs were spotless and shows what a great performer Jay-Z is. He certainly added a new dimension to Glastonbury, saved it from the boring MOR showcase the main stage has become. I might just watch it again actually!
Wicked :)
I think I will wacth it later on there.
Pigeon Yes You Must Be Missing Something
Pigeon_eater, how dare you say i talk crap.Let me get this right. You assume my taste in music is all white indie-rock.You want me respect an artist imo feel is tepid with a lack of originality. You bring in the subject of the colour of his skin and it being a good reason an artist should headline the Pyramid.
In attempting to be politically correct you, yourself sound overtly racist.
For me there is only one criteria that anyone should have regardless if they are white, black, brown, yellow, pink, purple, orange, MERIT,NOT TOKEN.
meh
it was a good idea to come in playing wonderwall but the way he did it was pretty lacklustre.
It was just a joke
I liked how lackluster it was it added a I dont really care what oasis said about me vibe to it.
not
a good mc
I'm not a huge fan or anything
but I was impressed by his show it was the most enjoyable bit of glasto I have seen so far easily.
He aint my fav MC by quite some way but hell that doesnt matter he was freakin ace.
that was actually amazing
One Mans Meat And All That
I respect the opinions of anyone who enjoyed Jay-Z but my argument is that he imo was not deserved of playing the headline spot regardless of musical genre and that is my opinion.
i can't believe were watching the same set
i really wanted to be impressed by this but i was masively disappointed.
The whole "wonderwall" intro fairly quickly descended into an incredibly embarassing and squirm-inducing minute and a half.
For the rest of the set he kept dropping in some interesting samples to get everyone's attention again before going into one of his own tunes which just don't cut it for a glastonbury headline act.
in short:
zzzzzzzz
^This
I cant believe people are actually heaping praise on that performance, are people really saying that was a better Glastonbury fit than previous headliners such as Radiohead, Stereophonics, Coldplay or even The Killers.
made up statistic that should be true:
4.3 million= the amount of white british middle class people that have become avid hip hop fans overnight
(we're not middle class but)
on next trip to parent's house "do you have any Jay-z that I can borrow?"
tho my dad is so excited about Leonard Cohen playing tonight he'll have forgotten about Jay Z by Monday morning.
yes
apart from Radiohead maybe...
But Jay-Z got a party goin what more could you want.
srsly
stereophonics, coldplay and the killers, better than jigga. That is a joke.
indeed,
I was initially too busy laughing to be able to type a reply
Hahahahaha
Stereophonics, Coldplay and The Killers better than Jay-Z??!! That's one of the funniest things I've ever read...
^This is probably my favourite reply
on this thread.
I haven't listenend to a Jay-Z record since I was about 13, but I thought it was really outstanding. I was actually really excited just watching it on TV, and had to grab my phone to text everyone I knew there saying "GO SEE JAY-Z!!"
Anyone got a spare Wireless ticket?
Foolish, The Killers, seriously?
the killers were pretty terrible
headlining the other year
well
yeah, that set was incredible. But fuck, I didn't know so many people on here had never heard a Jay Z album before. Shameful.
His performance was CLASS...
It started brilliatly with loads of energy with 99problems and the AC/DC riff plus the Rehab sample, lost a little energy in the middle, but ended spectacularly.
Once again, fuck Noel Gallagher.
only saw a couple of songs on the edited highlights earlier
but pretty good i thought. i was half expecting three songs, a load of posturing from a crew and then flouncing off, but that shows you how wrong i was.
More energy
Loved how he kept each song brief to keep up the momentum, but thought his words lacked enthusiasm at times and it felt from the TV that the crowd's interest waned in and out. Tho having said that, it's the only performance I've seen so that's made me want to be there. Eg Winehouse.
I saw him at Wembley last year and it was one of the best gigs i have ever seen.
plus he had memphis bleek, beyonce, lupe fiasco, green lantern and nas with him.
I think Wireless will be pretty good too... he has signed to Live Nation who own Wireless, plus i suspect there will be more real jay-z fans there too... i cant wait
you what?
I cant see how Jay-Z got one over on noel gallagher by singing one of his songs, resulting in the crowd singing along. First of all I cant even tell if it was meant to be a proper attempt at a cover or it was a pisstake, either way it was shite, and he wasnt even playing the right chords to start with.
And the crowd seemed to love it more then any of his songs, he looked a bit pissed off.
I think it was a bit crap by hyping up his performance by going on about noels comments beforehand. Why not just play the show rather than build up what was said, who gives a shit anyway. If a rock band played a traditional rap event, would that go down without any comments being made? Whether its right or wrong, someone always has a different opinion, and has every right to.
Just this whole thing irritates me, and I have nothing against Jay-Z, Ive listened to quite a bit of his stuff, but it just seems that loads of people are trying to be 'cool or 'different' by going around saying yeah Jay-Z should headline, when in all honesty he shouldnt. Also filling his set with 'rock' tracks in the background was a bit annoying, he should have just thought screw it, ill play what i want to play, and not pander to the festivals traditions i.e rock.
"I cant even tell if it was meant to be a proper attempt at a cover or it was a pisstake"
says it all
interesting perspective
i think the 3rd paragraph is valid.
but i think the dropping in the rock samples was a good idea, keeps everyone happy with songs they recognise, and shows that actually hip hop and rock dont have to be complete opposites.
As much as i like to see people having digs at Noel Gallagher...
Jay-Z's set is awful, right from the initial half-muterings of Wonderwall, through all his 'hits'. It's mediocre. I love that he got the last word, but he's just not a very talented musician. It's a shame you're not allowed to agree with him being an awful headliner without looking uglily xenaphobic.
or an uglilier user of language
Yeah, i'm sorry for the stray vowel, but it's definitely a word.
"but he's just not a very talented musician"
What a load of shit. Even most cosncious (i.e. boring) backpacker hip-hop acts cite him amongst their favourite MCs, and 'The Blueprint' is a straight-up 10/10 album with 'Reasonable Doubt' not far behind it.
I wish some people would have the balls to admit that the reason that they don't like him is that they can't (or are reluctant to) connect to black culture because they're to wrapped up in trying to convince themselves that the latest Nick Cave album wasn't a massive pile of shit.
I'm not too sure he's that bothered by what Nick Cave fans think of him though still.
^ this is the biggest pile of shit i've ever read.
Tinpot hip-hop acts from wherever can look up to him, i'm not telling them not to, i just don't think rapping/MCing/spitting/dropping bombs, whatever people call it, is a skill, or anything i particularly want to listen to. That MUST be because i don't like black people, right? If you believe that you're very naive.
OK.
...but just so you know, he's a better lyricist than anyone in any of the bands you like.
P.S. The I didn't say "like", I said "relate to" and I didn't say people, I said "culture".
P.P.S. "dropping bombs?"
...
Well, you've no idea of the bands i like so the first point's pretty irrelevant. To be honest, i don't really know what 'black culture' is, so i'm not sure if you're right or not. Perhaps you could tell me.
Bearing in mind you're on this site...
you definitely like At the Drive IN, and I still maintain that Jay-Z has better lyrics than they do.
If you don't like At the Drive in then my second guess is The Fall.
If you don't like them, then my third guess is Pavement.
I'm not going to rise to the bait of defining what black culture is, as I'm pretty sure you know what I'm mean by it. In fairness, I probably should've said "black-youth culture".
P.S. I've generally considered the word "culture" to be a positive word, so take it from there.
you arent really helping further your point of view
rather than getting into a case where you just argue over who likes better music, it would be better to disregard the point that being a good hip hop artist takes no talent, accept some people dont like it, but maintain that he is well respected in hip hop and mainstream music culture, and deserved his spot as headliner, as he proved.
i dunno,
its nothing to do with connecting with black culture for a lot of people, from the ages of 12-16 i listened to an awful lot of hip hop, and from 16-now i still listen to a fair bit. I never listened to that much Jay Z, though i think hes alright. It is possible to like hip hop and not love Jay-Z.
Having said that i think the set suffered a bit on telly, but i can imagine being there would have been really good fun.
Jay Z was 10 times better than the verve anyway
Just got back
and his performance alone justified the price of the ticket. He blew me awayyyyyy:D
It was an entertaining spectacle
but its being waaaaaaaaaayyy over hyped. Mainly by people who don't usually listen to hip hop...He's been decent for years its no revalation. And as for all the Noel V Jay z stuff its frankly boring....Its like Eavis, the bbc anyone else in involved in glasto going LOOK LOOK WE GOT IT RIGHT WE ARE JUSTIFIED!! Well pat on the back did Glasto even sell out this year?
this
I couldn't get anywhere near the stage (I am stupid) so I had to sod off elsewhere but people I talked to after were saying that the Wonderwall bit was really funny etc and they spent the rest of the set anticipating a guest (Keith Richards was one rumour) and while they enjoyed, it wasn't as good as the Royal Albert Hall thing from a couple of years back. These are from the people that certainly aren't crying out for Oasis / Coldplay / Paul Weller line up every year either.
When I get back everyone (The festival, BBC, Q and Guardian obviously) is proclaiming it as completely brilliant. So I'm confused and about to go on iPlayer to make my own mind up.
I was there
And it was quite possibly the best thing I saw all weekend. The video montage at the start before start really got the antipication going, and winning the crowd over straight away with the first few strokes of Wonderwall was a bit of a masterstroke
Pretty gutted I'm not seeing him again at Wireless now :(
Is this on the internet anywhere?
i hoped iplayer might have had it, though appears not.
unfortunatly
your a bit late
it was on there but i think they took it down after a week
have you tried youtube?
Ok, so I wasn't at Glasto,
and all I've seen in Wonderwall on YouTube.
BUT, I was at Roskilde, and he was incredible there. Easily on a par with Radiohead.
And that's having seen them both over the same weekend. I can't split them for my highlight of the festival.
I'm sure he was ace at Glasto as well.
He came on playin Wonderwall
:D
awsome, then bang in 99 problems
:D
starting with wonderwall!
One other problem
The crowd sang along rather than pissing their pants. Still, you can't buy a smart crowd. Well, Jay-Z probably could, actually.
AC/DC riffin
nice :)
I got one thing to say to you...
I GOT 99 Problems...

True
.
yep
i don't think they're "classic" enough to be able to just walk into the slot and they're not current enough at the moment to justify taking it the way someone like Kings of Leon or White Stripes might get it.
yep
i don't think they're "classic" enough to be able to just walk into the slot and they're not current enough at the moment to justify taking it the way someone like Kings of Leon or White Stripes might get it.
hahaha!
huh?

That Danger Mouse mash-up between The Beatles' White Album and Jay Z's Black Album is one of the best things I've ever heard.

I dunno but
think my interest and enthusiasm for this set is waning
It's just a dip for the middle section
All sets have it. It's still 10x better than anything else at that festival.
hang in there
he will whip out more party tunes definatly
flow
impressive live
Annie
hard knock life

yeah
fair point.
no tricks no drama just great music
apart from the intro, but that was necessary
the intro
was well funny.
Awesome...
Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome
I'm converted
Fuck. Noel. Gallegher.
^racist
Jay-Z
Is fecking shite.
good point
Noel
is that you?
I bet
wrightylew still wishes it had been Dave Gilmour headlining
