Why is the cover art on British-made albums so in comparison to American records? Has this always been the case? do American labels just spend more money on artwork or is it a case of a bit of tlc? This question popped into my head after seeing the piss-poor artwork adorning that Dirty Pretty Things album elsewhere on this site. Not as bad as the Hard-Fi one, admittedly, but still very, very bad.
I think you missed out a crucial word

no you don't.
You're right. Insert your choice of negative adjective.
Look at it as an opportunity to use your imagination.

There has always been more of a DIY ethic in British music. This manifests itself in many ways, one of which is low production values.
Is this true? ^
mega generalisation ahoy.
I'm sure Ian Mckaye would have
something to say about it
.
The OP posed his question in terms of generalisations. I responded accordingly. Of course there are exceptions. Doy.
here's some generalisations for your pipe
US is bigger than UK. US sales will be larger than UK sales.
Us Brits...
tend to understate everything.. so if bad artwork can be seen as understating then maybe theres an answer.
Almbum art standards were set in Britain
or at least by British band; whether or not they worked with American (madison avenue) counterparts I don't know, but I can tell you most people didn't give two shits about cover art or record packaging till Sgt. Peppers- after that, they were off to the races.

I like colourful &/or cool loking cover art.
That's my well informed and generally brilliant opinion on the matter.
I think alot of bands
just let the label knock up something, it's a case of taking pride in what you do. Being creative or enjoying having that control over it. Even suggesting a painting or photograph to the label would be better than half the cack bands put out today. I'm a graphic designer and it annoys me how little effort ppl put into artwork these days.
Without turning this into a jagfest, our band did some fold out poster artwork for our EP. One side has an angry Gorilla swimming underwater with an Echidna and the otherside an evil Nahwhal. We did it because we wanted to make something visually interesting that represents our music, basically something stupid. you can see the folded up cover here, when it folds out it shows the whole nahwhal....

As Peel used to say:
on the subject of nice cover art or beautiful packaging "it shouldn't matter, but it kind of does"
I always think it
Sets the tone of what you are about to listen to.
Depends on the group.
There's loads of bands will killer cover art and have a knack for sweet creativeness...just have to look around.....just not in everyones faces like the examples of dpt and hf.
Try looking at this cover art here by this band here. When the top of the page loads up.... anthropromorphic mammoth versus shark. V.cool.

Beastly!
It reminds me of some weird animal battle anime or something!
The Shins always have great cover art.
I actually bought 'Sing Song' by The Little Ones because it reminded me of 'Chutes Too Narrow' and it turned out to be by the same artist. That's the only time I've ever bought a record purely on the strength of the cover. It turned out alright.
