we lived above a greasy spoon cafe and the vent from their kitchen ran through our kitchen, so we all constantly smelled like chips. OH GOD IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS SINCE I WAS A STUDENT :'(
I went down for a student night in Southampton a few months ago and damn, it was a horrific student house and the girl i pulled asked me what year i was in. i felt old
at my second uni; a converted shop in the middle of a manchester council estate, with a chinese take away as a next door neighbour and racist teenagers vandalising the house (they were throwing potatoes at our windows, we believe in a malicious act of violence against the irish girl)
2nd year - metal doored flat in Toxteth
3rd year - run down terraced house oppostite a park near John Lennon's gaff
4th year - massive georgian house with really botched improvements as the ceiling fell down one day
All were good but with bad bits - usually the people I was sharing with.
Unfortunately we ruined it by turning the place into a pigsty. Still, we had Pugwall lyrics pinned to the wall and there was always milk in the fridge, so it wasn't that bad.
I had a Dr Who picture on our wall and it wasn't even retro to do so. There was also a secion in the corridor to put pictures of Ocean COlour Scene provided you had an insulting enough comment to write on it. That was my idea funnily enough
I was forever cleaning the kitchen because the girls I lived with were pretty disgusting. We had hand prints on the wall that someone made the first night we got there.
anything and everything became an ashtray, including cups and plates - often with half-eaten meals stuck to them - so, unsurprisingly, we had a bit of a problem with rats.
We were very nearly thrown out when the landlord made a surprise visit to the house and discovered it was in a disgraceful state, but fortunately for us it was already the last semester and it would have made no sense to chuck us.
On top of that, the house next door was derelict and had been annexed by a flock of pigeons, so you could expect to be woken up at 4.30 every fucking morning by the noisy little cunts cooing and twittering.
That said my room was beyond ace, it really was huge, and the house was in a really good spot for Chester city centre/uni/pubs. Wouldn't mind paying £55 a week in rent again either. Them were t'days, etc.
but all girls I lived with at uni were simply disgusting in terms of any household chores - they really must have had everything done for them when they were at home.
I lived with four of them at one point and they were disgraceful when it came to cleanliness. If they'd just cleaned up after themselves, the house would never have ended up in the state it did - I'm not saying I was perfect but I was nowhere near as grotty as they were.
Their rooms were shit tips and all, clothes, ashtrays and general crap everywhere.
who'd obviously never washed a dish in their lives but was shocked that girls were even worse. I'm afraid my 14 month old daughter will be enshewing her course when it comes to that time of her life and I find out she's living like a tramp whilst some guilt tripped lower middle class male housemate feels obliged to do it for her - Teamwork - it can cross genders as well you know¬!
I once discovered a plate of half-eaten mash potato mixed with beans hidden in the corner behind one of the sofas. It was rank. Also, the same girl who did this got her dad to practically write her dissertation for her. :S
1970s flat-block halls. We were the last people to live in them so we could do what we liked to them really. But they were very cheap so they had no lounge area, just a kitchen.
second and third year - big house, 5 bedrooms, 20 minutes from uni, really shoddy condition. My room was pink and quite tidy. The communal areas still make me feel ill thinking about them. I used to sit on the sofa and yoghurt pots filled with ash would fall on me :(
fourth year - big house, 6 bedrooms, 15 minutes from uni. Not quite so disgusting, still pretty bad in communal areas. I had a nice attic room. The sitting room was wood panelled with a weird concrete fireplace, nice.
I don't miss my student houses AT ALL. I miss the people, but I wouldn't want to live with them again (except the nice clean one I still live with)
if you can call it a student house. Its a one bed flat im sharing with my boyfriend and another DiSer for the summer. Its on a nice leafy street in a nice part of Manchester with a modern interior and "trendy" exposed brickwork.
It was disgusting purely because the other people were the messiest people I have ever known.
At one point I actually had to put a note (I hate doing this) on the bathroom door which said 'if you piss on the toilet seat please have the decency to wipe up after yourself' in red marker.
All the houses round here are Victorian terraces and all leak in the same places.
The worst house I lived in wasn't even that cheap. The sofa was broken and had nails sticking out of it in a certain bit, and the girls who were there before us were idiots - there was plastic on one of the burners on the stove where they'd put a milk carton on it when it was on, and there was a large burnt circle in the living room carpet where they'd put a hot frying pan on the floor. We also found cutlery including kitchen knives down the back of the sofa.
I met this African guy who had a house. He was a bit mental. He'd married this disabled English woman and inherited her house. It was in a nice area but hadn't been done up in years. It was a semi-detatched but had a huge garden. Rather than build an extention he'd literally put a portakabin at the back door, then sometime later put one at the back of that and knocked a hole through, and so on and so on. I got a proper bedroom, well, i say a proper bedroom, it was advertised as a double with ensuite. Somehow, and it still worries me, he'd built a shower inside a wardrobe, put a bit of a tray in the bottom and voila, according to him it was a shower cubicle. It hadn't been decorated since the 70s, the gas-fire leaked, all the furniture was shit and he wouldn't let me change any of it. Everyone had a cupboard in the kitchen, those council estate kind from the 80s that had brown laminate on the front, he insisted we all had our own and had padlocks on them. He lived in the downstairs bedroom with some woman and it was impossible to bring friends round, even during the day. The bathroom was an awful plum-coloured set and it STUNK of piss. As i said, my room was a double, kind of like a converted twin living room, in one room was my bed and wardrobe-shower and in the other was a suite, TV etc. He didn't seem to understand the tennant/landlord etiquette, quite often i came home to find him watching my TV and scratching his balls. Eventually the showe broke, so i had to use the shared one. To get to it i had to walk down two sets of stairs, through the front room, kitchen and three DIY-style bedrooms.
1st: Was shared with 7 other blokes in Nottingham and it was a brand new furnished flat so it was pretty nice. It was pretty massive and we had big partys in the kitechen/livin room, with me DJing to 20/30 people we invited back from club nights etc.
2nd: was a lil house in Beverly was pretty nice also but my room stank of damp it was rank, but I wasn't there long anyway. Oh and the roof leaked out the back. There were no big partys, it was pretty boring in comparision. You could get chip spice just steps away from the front door though ;)
hideous halls, with bugs that came up from the disgusting flat below. Once one of the windows fell out and onto someone walking below it, luckily it was only from the second floor but there was still blood all over the ground the next day.
2nd year: really nice massive flat, 20/30 minutes from uni, i got the smallest bedroom which was still a double and pretty big, but the people i lived with were neat-freaks so it was all a bit tense living with them as i don't do the washing up straight after i've eaten OMG.
3rd year and 4th year (now): lovely small flat, 10 minutes cycle from uni in a really good area, i have the biggest room with bay windows/double bed/amazing tiled fireplace etc, nice kitchen/livingroom with cool stove, and a shared garden we never use. My flatmates aren't disgusting and aren't freakishly tidy, awesome!
What halls did you stay in? I've applied to warrender park+fraser court purely because my dad used to live at the meadows and said it was good. I know nothing about them.
and in my 1st year seemed be where all the nice people live. apparently the building was used in the film of the prime of miss jean brodie. idk where fraser court is.
but the art college have seperate (shit) halls at sciennes, so you should be fine. Warrender is lovely, right next to the meadows and a gorgeous building, my flatmates boyfriend used to live there.
i had strip lighting and venetian blinds in my room.
half of the house was locked off from the 8 of us living there. we had a room called "dr louise howard" which we broke into and used for parties. we also had a "motor research unit" which we never managed to break into.
i lived in a nice flat above an italian bakery. high ceilings with ceiling fans and a little kitten running around. i was only a student for six months though. fun fact: you can see the outside of the building in the film Jumanji for about 1 second. exciting!
all 3 of the ones
I had ended up stinking of mold by the end of the year.

we lived above a greasy spoon cafe and the vent from their kitchen ran through our kitchen, so we all constantly smelled like chips. OH GOD IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS SINCE I WAS A STUDENT :'(
Ditto on the years
I went down for a student night in Southampton a few months ago and damn, it was a horrific student house and the girl i pulled asked me what year i was in. i felt old
aw cmon
you had a great place
.
at my first uni; a quaint maisonette
at my second uni; a converted shop in the middle of a manchester council estate, with a chinese take away as a next door neighbour and racist teenagers vandalising the house (they were throwing potatoes at our windows, we believe in a malicious act of violence against the irish girl)
First year - self catering with woeful kitchen area- in Toxteth
2nd year - metal doored flat in Toxteth
3rd year - run down terraced house oppostite a park near John Lennon's gaff
4th year - massive georgian house with really botched improvements as the ceiling fell down one day
All were good but with bad bits - usually the people I was sharing with.

Christ that's bleak
could you not afford lightbulbs, or did you just really like the orange glow of that streetlight outside?
I dont know when that was taken
its old but I can do fresher ones later i SPOSE!
we have plenty of lightbulbs n stuffs
It was a nice little house.
Unfortunately we ruined it by turning the place into a pigsty. Still, we had Pugwall lyrics pinned to the wall and there was always milk in the fridge, so it wasn't that bad.
Sure it was always milk?
I had a Dr Who picture on our wall and it wasn't even retro to do so. There was also a secion in the corridor to put pictures of Ocean COlour Scene provided you had an insulting enough comment to write on it. That was my idea funnily enough
Hang on, thought you loved OCS ?
no that's Mickey Loosefit
I think
two bedroomed flat
in Putney owned by mate's dad. £45 a week and we never saw a single bill. Pair of spoilt bastards.
^ signed to EMI yet?
Lool
of course not
Er... do I know you?
no why?
do you only know people who ask you if youre signed to EMI?
cos
around that time we were arrogantly expecting to get signed to EMI within weeks.
It was good
Seven bedrooms, four storeys, nice garden out back. It's nicer than where I live now.
Would love to own any of the houses I used to live in as a student
but now have them as a family house with none of the cunts I lived with. Nice.
pretty ok, despite us getting robbed twice.
I was forever cleaning the kitchen because the girls I lived with were pretty disgusting. We had hand prints on the wall that someone made the first night we got there.
a shithole, most of the time
anything and everything became an ashtray, including cups and plates - often with half-eaten meals stuck to them - so, unsurprisingly, we had a bit of a problem with rats.

horrible to say it
but all girls I lived with at uni were simply disgusting in terms of any household chores - they really must have had everything done for them when they were at home.
True
Same here. And they always had the most epic frights over who's turn it was to buy loo roll.
completely in agreement on that score
I lived with four of them at one point and they were disgraceful when it came to cleanliness. If they'd just cleaned up after themselves, the house would never have ended up in the state it did - I'm not saying I was perfect but I was nowhere near as grotty as they were.

I lived with messy males as well
who'd obviously never washed a dish in their lives but was shocked that girls were even worse. I'm afraid my 14 month old daughter will be enshewing her course when it comes to that time of her life and I find out she's living like a tramp whilst some guilt tripped lower middle class male housemate feels obliged to do it for her - Teamwork - it can cross genders as well you know¬!
yep.

holy shit!
*scours for graduate courses*
I've just moved out of it
It was disgusting purely because the other people were the messiest people I have ever known.
At one point I actually had to put a note (I hate doing this) on the bathroom door which said 'if you piss on the toilet seat please have the decency to wipe up after yourself' in red marker.
I still live in student-y type place, near my old uni
All the houses round here are Victorian terraces and all leak in the same places.

pretty awful.

I had two
1st: Was shared with 7 other blokes in Nottingham and it was a brand new furnished flat so it was pretty nice. It was pretty massive and we had big partys in the kitechen/livin room, with me DJing to 20/30 people we invited back from club nights etc.

You're at edinburgh, right?
What halls did you stay in? I've applied to warrender park+fraser court purely because my dad used to live at the meadows and said it was good. I know nothing about them.
warrender park is really nice
and in my 1st year seemed be where all the nice people live. apparently the building was used in the film of the prime of miss jean brodie. idk where fraser court is.
yeah

ah thanks!
good to know i've made and alright choice...
I don't know, but I move in in less than a week :D :D :D
ex uni office block
i had strip lighting and venetian blinds in my room.
half of the house was locked off from the 8 of us living there. we had a room called "dr louise howard" which we broke into and used for parties. we also had a "motor research unit" which we never managed to break into.
i paid £30 a week inc all bills.
i had more money then than i do now!
i lived in a nice flat above an italian bakery. high ceilings with ceiling fans and a little kitten running around. i was only a student for six months though. fun fact: you can see the outside of the building in the film Jumanji for about 1 second. exciting!
Two words:
cleaning rota.
it was a class 1 biohazard
Kim and Aggie would literally die. Probably of a vicious necrotising bacteria
