I always recommend this, but check out Pather Panchali (the first in the Pather trilogy) by Satyajit Ray. Its incredibly moving (harrowing in places), but its light on dialogue and the plot is quite loose, lots of "illuminating" scenes. It still holds together beautifully

I now really want to see this film. I've never really got into Troma but this does look funny.
