by the end

12. maybe 13.

definitely the loudest band i've ever seen. managed to top dinosaur jr...

glad to hear it

I think Monday's going to be good!

can't wait for sunday!

setlist?

I'm going tomorrow!

Bit of a trivial question, but do they allow bags into where the band is playing?

Yes

they do.

i can't hear a fucking thing

again

it's gonna be days.

but wow, i mean, that last bit. that's a once in a lifetime experience there.

that last bit?

did you go/are you going?

i really don't want to give anything away.

oh shiiiiiit

yeah i'm going tomorrow. i'm excited now.

i've got a spare ticket. do you/anyone want it?

I DO!

me tooo

but I'm in peterborough...and skint...and am going to see them but am fearing that seeing them at a festival could be a massive disappointment. Hell someone please convince me otherwise..

skint AND in peterborough

oof. life can really fuck you over sometimes.

oi

I'm only here for about a week, I can't move into my Manchester house and I'm working in france as of monday. Hang about, yes life is awful, please donate that ticket to me xxxxxx

:D

unfortunately jordan's friend is having it. sorry!

agh

they were the only reason why I booked Beni at first. They better be good out there otherwise I'll cry about missing them playing here

the last 20 minutes...

...nearly killed me. it was like the sound of a plane's engine exploding during take off. on my face.

wow

from reports it sounds like it was louder than ICA, which is fantastic.

yup

depending where you were standing, it could be FAR louder than the ICA. it was fucking deafening at one point about the 6th or 7th song. kevins guitar was coming through so loudly i genuinely couldnt figure out what song it was!

i was at the front for the ICA

what time you gonna be in london for tomorrow? think me and dom are getting in around half five/six.

That was the thing I've ever seen/heard in my life.

I took my earplugs out for a bit and only really had them half in anyway. My ears are in pain but it sounded incredible.

Perfect setlist. You Made Me Realise 30 minute long noise bit = the greatest 30 minutes of my life.

amazing

were they giving out earplugs this time?

yeah, they were giving them out for free.

I would advise taking them up on the offer.

thanks

no worries for me with earplugs, i have my own, but that's good news for my brother. he is a bit scared of these stories :D

i think that that noise bit

was the only time i've ever wished i had earplugs at a gig.

me and my friend didn't know whether to laugh or cry or implode or what. i want to live in that noise.

My internal organs were shaking.

I never wanted it to end.

i braved it without my earplugs

the last 20 minutes hurt, but it was so so so so so so so so so so so good

It certainly was unique

and the loudest gig I have ever been to,

but...

but...

but... the extreme distortion sort of ruined it at times, and as robin pointed out up there^ at times it was difficult to make out what song they were playing. MBV always used to be about making beautiful melodies out of incredible noise, and the melody part got lost tonight.

AND THE FIRST NAYSAYER AWARD...

... GOES TO...!

Seriously, I am gripped about seeing them on Sunday - I shat my pants just hearing them through the ICA fire exit last week. But I am glad to hear someone finally provide a perspective other than "ohmigodohmigodohmigod" and "it was really loud." Well, except you did the latter, too.

totally agree

i really thought there would be a 'how dissapointing were mbv' thread... i got so irritated that i couldn't hear any vocals. i mean i know they are meant to be set back but you couldn't hear a word. as someone who knows every song inside out, to not know what is playing tells you that the sound guy got it wrong. they had a simple job as far as i'm concerned and they got it wrong. i'm annoyed by the whole thing.

some of it was fantastic though. and my ears are screaming at me. you could tell the people who'd been at the gig on the tube home as they were shouting to the person sitting next to them. the holocaust was close to frightening - the closest thing to what one must sound like. even with fingers in ears for most of it it was still so powerful. like standing behind a jet engine taking off. it actually made my eyes water.

overall 6/10

^^^ ditto

I thought it was good, but kevin shields vocal weren't switched on which started to annoy me after a while. slow sounded crap as an instrumental. i walked around the hall thinking this may change things but it didn't.

don't get me wrong, it was a good gig, but i think the novelty of the volume is what people are raving over.

hopefully they will have sorted things out by tomorrow night.

noen in the history of MBV live shoews ever heard any vocals

is historically prooved that the vocals have always been very low and even more live.
you don't know MBV at all if you are saying this.

^

english = second language

Awesome.

Yeah, sometimes it was a tad hard to make out what song they were playing, through all the distortion/loudness but it was so gratifying to see them play live. And Le Volume Coubre were rather good as well.

I was stood by the sound desk

and I could see the sound guy's digital decibel meter. It read 128.9 dB during the last bit, which is apparently equivalent to a jet taking off, IN YOUR FACE!!!

without any pretention or hyperbole

i've never heard anything like the last 20mins of that set in my life. Everything was shaking with the loudness, it was beginning to cross over from being just sound.

Other people that were there tonight, please re-assure me that you now have a sound like a car alarm going off in your head! I've had ringing in my ears before, but never this...

I've just got ringing

and it sounds like I'm listening to everything underwater.

Ce n'est pas bon.

Kinda makes you wish...

...you saw them back in their pomp. I they are this good now, how good were they then? The mind boggles, and the ears ring. Incredible.

this sounds amazing

really looking forward to the Saturday gig. I've got my ER20s at the ready.

I've got a spare, £25, face value, marky@cantab.net, etc.

this was a frickin awesome gig

i was actually scared from the volume stories, and this is coming from a fan of wolf eyes/lightningbolt/locust. i have to say the free ear plugs were amazing- kept pretty much all of the melody/texture, but just took the edge off of the highest overtones- my girlfriend reckoned she could hear the singing much better with them in. i actually had them out for most of it tho...they did nothing to stop the gut punching bass!

opening salvo- awesome, but blurred by excitement
next 20 mins- had to move back due to heat/strobe/crowd based panic attack issues
rest of gig- watched from near back of room and was AMAZING- the light show was really effective, especially seeing as the band were doing fuckall onstage (naturally)

youmade me realise-......like sitting on an military grade bass speaker...in a wind tunnel.....testing a jet engine...i seriously spaced out half way through, it was strange and great

o yeh, and i enjoyed the fact that all the wasted people around me were actually dancing when they played 'soon' it was like a party during a nuclear war.

ps- i applied for a job at the forbidden planet in bristol, and they rang up asking me for an interview when i was qeueing up for the gig, so overall its a pretty good day :)

you are pretty deft then

as the earplugs were shit and i couldn't use them ans they cut all the best frequencies.didn't use any earplugs and my ears aren't ringing... i'm an alien???

wow.

i only said was the most beautiful thing ever... then came the NOISE.. it was incredible, you just stopped thinking.

I actually..

shed a bit of a tear I was so fucking happy tonight. They met all expectations.. and surpassed them. It was too fucking brilliant for words!

I'm actually worried about my hearing and the shooting pains in my neck but it was all worth it! The holocaust drilled it home how special tonight was - i've never witnessed anything like it - and it really was like a jet taking off in your face - but with Kevin Shields being the pilot! All in all : This band are fucking awesome.

And thats an understatement.

The ICA was amazing...

...but the Roundhouse was just perfect for them. The sound was an endless, glorious assault on the senses, beautifully matched by the brilliant lighting and freakishly cool imagery on the backdrop. After sixteen years of hibernation, it's incredible they can still be so intense and enveloping. I play in a band, but after tonight, I think I might have to burn my guitar...

wow

the show was just something else, the holocaust eruption of noise was the icing on the cake, my ears are buzzing (its now 4:39, still awake)

Just got up

and my ears are still ringing - plus i'm going tonight and tomorrow too. I think i may have to finally go for earplugs to avoid being deaf for the rest of my life. Serves me right for standing right in front of a speaker stack for the sonic hairdryer that was "you made me realise".

truly awesome!

had seen them several times back in the 80s and was naturally worried that they wouldn't be as great as I remembered them, but it was like they had never been away - if anything they were better

sounded fantastic from where I was standing (to the right of the stage - didn't bother with the ear plugs) ... vocals were low in the mix as always (or rather, guitars were bloody high) but could still hear them fine

setlist was pretty much perfect - highlights included, in no particular order, You Never Should, Lose My Breath, Soon, Only Shallow, Sueisfine, Realise, Kiss, etc.

oh and that ringing in our ears that we all experienced afterwards - I'm sure I always used to get that at most gigs I went to 20 years ago ... makes me wonder if bands have just got quieter over the years (more likely, I've got deafer)

really looking forward to Sunday now

Times anyone?

As I am seeing MBV tonight - would anyone be kind enough to say when MBV came on (and finished) last night as I have to catch trains and stuff home and this would give me an idea of which ones I can aim for.

I saw MBV at Reading Uni and it was like standing under Concorde taking off.
Sounds from these postings that nothing has changed.

Scary.

I assume this will be recorded for a live album?
This would be the quickest way to get new MBV recordings!!!

mbv were on about 9:15

and off about 10:45. they were meant to be on 9:00 to 10:30.

I was at the

Reading Uni gig too, if it was the one where Welfare Heroine supported. Nothing has changed (which is a good thing).

yeh they finished around 10.40

scheduled to end at 10.30 tho. this was actually awesome- me and my girlfriend were able to watch the end of the encore and still catch the tube to paddington in time for the last train back to bath

sorry

i say encore, it was actually just the last song.

yeah

the spectacle of the whole thing was immense. The last 20 mins was just a haze of survival, the noise was literally breathtaking. Ears are ringing much louder than usual, but it's the loudest thing i've ever heard...agree with the Dinosaur Jr comment!

Bobby Gillespie was soaking the noise up too.

Marvelous, and definitely with of those gigs you'll forever hark back to.

im actually getting a bit scared

hearing about all the volume stories, but nevertheless i cant bloomin' wait for tonight.

The free earplugs is a nice touch as well.

I've heard tell that the touts are suffering

and have handfuls of tickets they can't sell.

Can someone tell me this is true, please?

Its true!

there seemed to be loads of spare tickets... i ended up having one as well!

Ears still fucked but thats the beauty of it! I had my earplugs (was right in front of the right hand speaker stack going mental) but i figured I've waited so long to hear/see MBV live fuck the earplugs!!

I have nothing to add

Except the setlist:

Only Shallow
When You Sleep
You Never Sshould
When You Wake
Lose My Breath
I Only Said
Come In Alone
Thorn
Nothing Much to Lose
To Here Knows When
Slow
Blown a Wish
Soon
Feed Me With Your Kiss
Sue is Fine
You Made Me Realise

cool

which means we should get honey power tonight. ace.

you shouldnt be so reckless lucy :)

did you get any good photos? or did you just go to enjoy it?

Incredible

Truely incredible. During the last 20 mins I just closed my eyes and lifted my hands up. I could feel my whole body vibrating. Last night was a performance of genuine beauty. This is what gigs should be.

I know i know

but i love them so much its worth the ACTUAL pain I'm in... a gig too far perhaps without the plugs... ooops!

Want to go again godammit - the first time can't be the last!! :(

Shots up on DiS soon hopefully, in the meantime a few shots here:

FUCKING AMAZING

but DEAR GOD THEY WERE LOUD. I was standing a good 10-15 metres away from the speakers and I could feel my teeth vibrating. Shame about the inaudible vocals, but what an experience in any case. The Loveless songs were just something else.

Awesome

Loved it. Was quite pissed so some of it was a bit of a blur. Will drink less tonight and remember more hopefully.

Went without earplugs and ears are ringing away now. Will put them in tonight methinks.

Truly superb.

...

Outrageously good. It almost doesn't sink in that it was actually happening, until Only Shallow hits and it's just... well... euphoric.

My ears hurt.

one of my ears is ringing significantly more than the other

i didn't take my camera, so apologies for the crappy phone-cam pics.

they had a pretty light show too:

it's like a theme park ride

I WANT TO GO AGAIN

let me know, k?

great great great gig

I don't love MBV but they blew me away (quite quite literally). The sound was phenomenal. The bass at times rivalled the most intense i've experienced at FWD (and the Big Apple party in Vauxhall last December). Obviously you couldn't have the whole gig at the volume of the wall of noise, but if you ask me in general it was as ALL gigs should be. Music is a physical thing and it's amazing feeling yourself pummelled by waves of sound! Leave the earplugs at home, I didn't use them. Ears stopped ringing about 5 mins after the gig and no probs today.

meditate

on bass weight as they say!

you're just lucky

it only took one not-even-that-loud gig for my ears to go from normal to the point of no return. now my ears ring all the time and i flinch whenever somebody knocks their fork on their plate.

The man

has a good point. It's a fallacy that going to loud gigs causes a steady decline in hearing ability - what seems to happen frighteningly often is that you'll be fine for ages, ears ring after a gig maybe but you only for a little while and then BAM, its one gig too many, and your hearings gone/you've got tinitus for ever.

I'm going tomorrow

Come innit

Loud!

that was such an awesome night. my ears! louder than merzbow, om, dinosaur jr, sunn, everything. was deafening. the visuals were great - the best bit was when whoever was doing the visuals forgot to take the computer arrow away from the screen during the noise bit, amazing.

true about not being able to hear the vocals, but i was told that was what their live shows were like anyways.

really good mixture of a set. a few fuck ups, but that's ok, they were awesome!

I felt like...

Oppenheimer watching the first atomic bomb test during those last 20 minutes. It was just that overwhelming and physical. Difficult to wrap my head around .

I'm very happy I had the earplugs in.
