Being Indie In Unsuitable Situations

So I've just finished a work experience placement at the studio of a local youth centre, and the other night, there were some kids from the youth club hanging around.

The guy in charge told me to teach some of them some stuff on guitar, despite the fact that I'm not a guitarist and, when I've played, this man has repeatedly complained about how horrible my technique is.

He suggested I show them something simple, like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. But I didn't want to. So I searched my limited guitar skills for something simple to show them.

Long story short, I ended up trying to teach three 9 year olds how to play the intro to Modest Mouse's 3rd Planet.

So. Further slightly obscure music in incongruous circumstances anecdotes?

I once tried to play Daughters of the Soho Riots at a party

I got stuff thrown at me for being depressing, and no-one would listen to my repeated shouts of how great it is :(

Wow

You sound like a great guy to have a party with...

i'm not gonna bother with sarcasm

as much as i adore the national, don't play it at parties unless you're 30 plus and playing 'apartment story'

Not especially indie, but fairly incongruous regardless

Whenever I spot a guitar lying around in someone's room ect., I find myself trying to battle (usually to no effect)the urge to play the intro to Moonlight on Vermont by Captain Beefheart, which has got me a few curious looks...and yes, I am indeed a colossal prick.

Thank you!

I'm coming out as a colossal prick too ... if a guitar is about at a gathering, I'll only belt out The Decemberists or Bob Dylan, maybe some Billy Bragg if they're REALLY lucky... and don't get me started on the DVDs and vinyl I bring round my mates... Suffice to say that most of the music i'm into takes more than one listen ... does that mean it's shit? :-)

My gran: what music do you like josh?

josh: oh yeah fuck buttons, holy fuck, fuck off machete, fuck face you know that kind of shit

*didn't actually happen

You forgot

Fucked Up!

i might make a mix-cd

consisting only of songs with 'fuck' in the title/bandname.

That's genius!

I may do something similar...

don't forget

fuck the facts guys...

and

that fucking tank.

Although they are seriously terrible.

My friend is a guitar teacher

His students are mostly young- between 10 and 17 approximately. He teaches them songs by Shellac and The Sonic. I have alot of respect for him.

shellac....

very simple, very repetitive.

The thread title

Being "indie"... can people please please stop using "indie" to describe themselves or actions that they do? It's so so so so so so so disgusting.

It was meant slightly tongue in cheek.

I think.

My bassist recently decided that I was "obscure" and now frequently reminds me.

dude

The Modest Mouse major label debut isn't really obscure!

:D

Being 'indie'?

*Sprays vomit over thread

people like this...

should be put in a box and be handled by top men.

BBC switch thing

is a joke right? otherwise that is the most embarising thing ever.

It's

Teenagers. That's what they're like. Disgusting shameful period of anyones life that it is. Why anyone would want to document it to such a degree is beyond me.

Wow

I'd love to have met you as a teenager.

TOP. MEN.

:D

sweet lord

She seems to live in/visit Liverpool, my stomach has turned. this would be a brilliant sketch quite frankly.

i'd like to

introduce that girl's face to a brick. I'm watching it at work without any sound and I can still tell how much I despise her.

"brick, meet indie.

indie.... brick."

"brick's not that indie

and I know coz I'm indie, coz like your gran wouldn't wear a brick and that's what indie is about, I know because I'm an indie"

About 3/4 of people I know can play 3rd planet

including me & I can't even play guitar, so I dont understand the problem here, its a great song and easy to learn.

Dear Agent,

Re "Being Indie In Unsuitable Situations" - not sure I want that as the title to my autobiography. Thanks, but I think I'll stick with 'Good Grief - Peanuts and S*M*A*S*H'
Yours,
Steve Lamacq

at christmass

we have a big meal round my dads place with loadsa family and friends and I usualy take some music along to play durring the meal in the back ground.

The most indie stuff I have played is Devendra Banheart and Grizzly Bear. They were quite well recived in-fact.

Last year I went for Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Which my unkle loved in teh end and no one else was fussed. So when everyone was drunk I wacked on Ricardo Villalobos' and his Fabric mix. My dads mate was dancing while serving the deserts.
