Sonic Youth=Laughable posers who never had one origanal thought in their heads let alone original riffs or even mildly original artistic motivation and execution. Sonic Youth are shameless selfpromoting frauds who should really just take about a year to focus and concentrate on stealing a good idea for once in their pathetic "career".
I haven't heard "washing machine" but my vote goes to "dirty" cause it's the closest I ever came to liking anything sonic youth ever did and that includes the two sonic youth shows I've attended which only served to cement my dislike for them.

I think what I said shows just the opposite. It's a failure to buy into the sham that is Sonic Youth. And yeah, that is a catty thing to say but it's just the way I have felt about them for sometime. I think Thurston has nice hair, good taste in music and music gear but that's about as far as he's gonna get with me. The dirty boots vid was cute but their music bores me to peices. Sonic Youth can't back up their claims to fame with anything powerfully unique or original, they don't deserve all the accolades they have gotten over the years.

Isaac Brock's Mother is my Dad's cousin
Isaac and I have the same Greatgrandfather (his maternal and my paternal) whose name was James Patrick Traynor (I am named after him-Patrick). I was close with Isaac's mother when we were kids but haven't seen her in decades and have never met Isaac, that's about it except to say that all I know is that Isaac always knew he was going to be a star, he is also a great photographer and I hope to meet him someday.
Whilst I'll admit that they're by no means perfect
Teenage Riot off Daydream Nation is probably my favorite song of all time.

Can't understand rue-the-day at all
One of the things Sonic Youth do so well is variety. Some of their early stuff is painfully raw, some of their later stuff is enormously complex, sometimes they have beautiful tuneful vocals, often they are harsh, spoken or non-existant, they've produced some very avant-garde and experimental stuff (especially on their own label) and some really popppy rock stufff. So... how can you hate / dismiss all of this output and tar it with the same brush?

i really like Sonic Youth.
i don't really care if they're "progressive" or "original" or "art", i just think they're a great rock band.
i also find it hard to believe you'd single out SY for being copycat frauds yet you'll sing the praises of an album that's at best a third rate imitation of the melvins with more of a pop nous.

Rue The Day obviously dislikes Sonic Youth... fair enough, if a bit weird considering the bands he is a fan of- many of which seem to be influeneced on some level by Sonic Youth. But its incredibly stupid to relegate them to being a bad band and so on, just for the above reason (you seem to do this alot, I remember your hip hop is shit thread only too well... I'm sure I don't need to remind you) - they are obviously a brilliant band, and there isn't really much of a counter argument. They've had their bad moments... but crikey, stuff like Daydream Nation and Sister (my fave SY album) just don't get old.
Plus they have a cooler name than any band... Sonic Youth.

they might have played with a lot of "hardcore" bands in the 80's, but they were never part of that scene or sound.
they played with/sounded like/were influenced by Swans and PiL and all the NY art and avant-garde bands.

my guess, you've heard Dirty and Goo once, and think every album sounds the same.
they're 2 of my least favourite albums by SY
they're such an original sounding band, they don't sound like anyone else, they dont rip anyone off, and even though they have a "Sonic Youth sound", every album is very different.

they think they are the best band ever and anyone who doesnt like them either 'doesnt get it', hasnt listened to them or has a rubbish taste in music.

The thing for me about Sonic Youth
is that they are in no way as complicated as people make out. They're actually fairly easy to get into. So I don't buy into people not getting them. Equally, I'd say anyone who likes hardcore or 80s alternative would be pretty likely to enjoy Sonic Youth.
As a band, I don't think what they write was necessarily as important as how they did it. They were groundbreaking in being successful and independent whilst signing to a major label. They deserve respect for that, certainly.

and to a certain extent i do respect that they were successful, a lot of people think they have been consistently excellent etc. but it just pisses me off how people act as though if you dont like them you are wrong in the head or something.

but that doesnt stop them being one of my favourite bands. they've released that many albums, the odd blip (the first EP, Confusion is Sex, NYC Ghosts & Flowers) doesn't really matter.

Shit, most brilliant artists try to sabotage their careers just to test the true value of their work. Yeah, pretty slick, they suckerd geffen records- I'm so proud, I should write home.
My Dying Bride was influenced by Swans
but they used that influence to a better end. Not really crazy about PiL, not impressed by anyone claiming to be under that influence.
