Sonic Youth - Washing Machine, for me is superior to Sister,Evol or Daydream Nation
Reply
Hmm^
I would say Goo is my fav.
Best Fall album - Hex Enduction Hour.
Best Shellac album - At Action Park
Sorry, but after the lame implications you made on the "Bleach" thread I have to say this:
(from the "bleach thread""
Sonic Youth=Laughable posers who never had one origanal thought in their heads let alone original riffs or even mildly original artistic motivation and execution. Sonic Youth are shameless selfpromoting frauds who should really just take about a year to focus and concentrate on stealing a good idea for once in their pathetic "career".
I haven't heard "washing machine" but my vote goes to "dirty" cause it's the closest I ever came to liking anything sonic youth ever did and that includes the two sonic youth shows I've attended which only served to cement my dislike for them.
Quit wasting your adoration on these phonies.
Miaow
Just because you don't understand it
doesn't mean its bad
not a failure to understand
I think what I said shows just the opposite. It's a failure to buy into the sham that is Sonic Youth. And yeah, that is a catty thing to say but it's just the way I have felt about them for sometime. I think Thurston has nice hair, good taste in music and music gear but that's about as far as he's gonna get with me. The dirty boots vid was cute but their music bores me to peices. Sonic Youth can't back up their claims to fame with anything powerfully unique or original, they don't deserve all the accolades they have gotten over the years.
you clearly dont understand them!
They make complex music that only highly advanced minds can understand! It's art dude!
shoot
that didn't come off as well as I thought :( it was sarcasm
so you DON'T think higer intelligence is reguired to enjoy Sonic Youth?
keep in mind that Issac Brock is my third cousin and I wil rip you hard if you answer wrong.
I was (not in a mean way) poking fun at yesiamaducks comment
you clearly just dont like them. Nothing to do withyou not understanding them.
Anyway I personally love sonic youth.
And Isaac Brook.
I was kidding about the ripping
but not Isaac Brock
third cousin?
thats so vague!!
Isaac Brock's Mother is my Dad's cousin
Isaac and I have the same Greatgrandfather (his maternal and my paternal) whose name was James Patrick Traynor (I am named after him-Patrick). I was close with Isaac's mother when we were kids but haven't seen her in decades and have never met Isaac, that's about it except to say that all I know is that Isaac always knew he was going to be a star, he is also a great photographer and I hope to meet him someday.
Whilst I'll admit that they're by no means perfect
Teenage Riot off Daydream Nation is probably my favorite song of all time.
The guys can write songs, and your a douche!
probably your favorite? if it weren't your favorite; what would be?
And yeah I'm douche and I'm proudly so.
Proud of being a shower?
I hope your are a power shower...
sure zinged him there
A shower is a nice way of putting it henry
as to the power bit, yeah, I am a power shower, why not?
Can't understand rue-the-day at all
One of the things Sonic Youth do so well is variety. Some of their early stuff is painfully raw, some of their later stuff is enormously complex, sometimes they have beautiful tuneful vocals, often they are harsh, spoken or non-existant, they've produced some very avant-garde and experimental stuff (especially on their own label) and some really popppy rock stufff. So... how can you hate / dismiss all of this output and tar it with the same brush?
Beleive me I tried and they failed me
not I who failed them, not my job to love bands, their job to make me love them.
nothing else to say
i really like Sonic Youth.
i don't really care if they're "progressive" or "original" or "art", i just think they're a great rock band.
i also find it hard to believe you'd single out SY for being copycat frauds yet you'll sing the praises of an album that's at best a third rate imitation of the melvins with more of a pop nous.
who exaclty do Sonic Youth 'copycat'?
thats what I want to know... bearing in mind taking an influence from another band isn't 'copying'.........
Rue The Day obviously dislikes Sonic Youth... fair enough, if a bit weird considering the bands he is a fan of- many of which seem to be influeneced on some level by Sonic Youth. But its incredibly stupid to relegate them to being a bad band and so on, just for the above reason (you seem to do this alot, I remember your hip hop is shit thread only too well... I'm sure I don't need to remind you) - they are obviously a brilliant band, and there isn't really much of a counter argument. They've had their bad moments... but crikey, stuff like Daydream Nation and Sister (my fave SY album) just don't get old.
Plus they have a cooler name than any band... Sonic Youth.
ALSO PLEASE EXPLAIN the statement 'self promoting frauds.' It seems idiotic, frankly. And please do not try and argue with me by telling me I'm young and you are old and therefore you know more about the world than I do because I'm just a young upstart... you tried that in the hip hop argument, and just looked silly.
Daydream and Evol make me sleepy
at least dirty keeps me awake
Sister? GOO?!?!?!?!?
best album by X?
...under the big black sun imo!
whoever it is talking about Sonic Youth
is a total moron.
i could write a 5000 word essay on how fucking ridiculously wrong they are about everything they said.
but im tired, and Austria have just missed 3 sitters in the Euros, so it could actually be a good game, so i'll just say
NO
sonic youth are massively poo
they took everything good and fun away from hardcore and made a load of bollocks. so suck my nuts everyone
good arguement...
they might have played with a lot of "hardcore" bands in the 80's, but they were never part of that scene or sound.
they played with/sounded like/were influenced by Swans and PiL and all the NY art and avant-garde bands.
massively poo though
or not.
how any/which albums of theirs have you listened to from start to finish more than once?
*many
oops.
73
yeah, so not many
my guess, you've heard Dirty and Goo once, and think every album sounds the same.
they're 2 of my least favourite albums by SY
they're such an original sounding band, they don't sound like anyone else, they dont rip anyone off, and even though they have a "Sonic Youth sound", every album is very different.
you are just proving to me everything that is wrong with sonic youth fans
they think they are the best band ever and anyone who doesnt like them either 'doesnt get it', hasnt listened to them or has a rubbish taste in music.
i dont even dislike them much, its just this attitude people hold towards them pisses me off.
yeah but
if there are so many fans and legions of people that love them, then surely you realise they're not "massively poo", they're just not to your taste.
i know and as i conceded above
(when i was being reasonable and not just trying to irritate) theyre not bad. just it gets boring hearing people say how you cant just not like them, you must have something wrong with you, or must not have listened to them enough.
tbh though, i am bemused by your position
i like hardcore... but sonic youth just dont sound like a non-fun hardcore band.
i was just being awkward to annoy sonic youth fans
The thing for me about Sonic Youth
is that they are in no way as complicated as people make out. They're actually fairly easy to get into. So I don't buy into people not getting them. Equally, I'd say anyone who likes hardcore or 80s alternative would be pretty likely to enjoy Sonic Youth.
As a band, I don't think what they write was necessarily as important as how they did it. They were groundbreaking in being successful and independent whilst signing to a major label. They deserve respect for that, certainly.
*wrote
And I should add that people do and can dislike them. But it's not cause they 'don't get it'
this kind of thing i think is totally fine
and to a certain extent i do respect that they were successful, a lot of people think they have been consistently excellent etc. but it just pisses me off how people act as though if you dont like them you are wrong in the head or something.
they're not totally consistent
but that doesnt stop them being one of my favourite bands. they've released that many albums, the odd blip (the first EP, Confusion is Sex, NYC Ghosts & Flowers) doesn't really matter.
if you'd have just said "i dont like them" rather than "they're massively poo", i wouldnt have written stupid paragraphs of rant. not liking SY definately doesnt mean you're wrong in the head.
yeah fair enough
just i get the impression that a lot of SY fans wont accept that someone just doesnt like them.
Sorry, I had to go to a funeral
otherwise I'd have been jumpin on the massive poo express.
Yeah Sonic Youth=Massisve Poo
Sorry, not impressed by their brilliant success that they orchestrated with business and pr manuevering rather than riding on a wave of unstoppable music as a truly gifted band would. Shit, most brilliant artists try to sabotage their careers just to test the true value of their work. Yeah, pretty slick, they suckerd geffen records- I'm so proud, I should write home.
My Dying Bride was influenced by Swans
but they used that influence to a better end. Not really crazy about PiL, not impressed by anyone claiming to be under that influence.

I can rebut that report in less than 500 words.
I'll be waiting

I'm not 100% certain on the purpose of this thread
Do I nominate my own album that I think is better than commonly acknowledged 'best' albums by that artist? Or do I join in slagging off rue the day for not liking Sonic Youth?
Best Afghan Whigs album:
Black Love
Throwing Muses: The Real Ramona
Black Love is the best Whigs album
I'm certain of it.
You're not meant to agree with me.
You're missing the whole point of this thread. I think.
Not only that
it's probably one of the top 3 albums of the 90s
No it's shit.
I hate it. Best Whigs album is Gentlemen.
Actually I think you're right
I'd even rate 1965 above it. What was i thinking?
Yea nominate your own album above one that is commonly knowledged for any band
really
Aphex Twin:
Selected Ambient Works vol. 2
His magnum opus.
KID A
is better than OK C or BENDS
duh
hmm I feel bad about your thread, why don't you clarify it a bit and try again, it's not too late?
I love how people's minds work; funny, I guess I was confused as to the purpose of this thread too but I thought what the hell; I'll take this opportunity to slag off Sonic Youth.
Oh dear, I ruined another thread (i ruined Count Zero's thread awhile back) but I don't feel too bad cause you tried to turn my "bleach" thread into a "is Smashing Pumpkins better than Nirvana? thread"- god this is rich
I must be daft cause I still don't get the intent of this thread. Do I choose an artist, then state what I think is their best album and then wait to see if anyone disagrees? if so
Best Beatles is "Sgt. Peppers Lonley Heart's Club Band"
But wait, it can't be the album that is generally recognized as the acme disc?
well, most people agree that "London Calling" or "Sandinista" or S/T are the best Clash Albums but I like "Black Market Clash" (original) cause it has my favorite Clash song on it "armagideon time".
Hmm^
