Glasgow Barrowlands

im going to see MBV in july up there, and havent been to Barrowlands before.
Can anyone give me any info on what its like as a venue? And what about the barrowlands itself? My brother said its a pretty dangerous place at night and its really difficult getting a taxi after about 11pm.

  • It is pretty dangerous when there are no gigs on

but if you are in a crowd you'll be fine.

And it's a really amazing venue. It's an old dance hall and still has these silver stars on the ceiling. The stage is at a good height and the sound is great. It's a renowned venue.

    • cheers

i just worry about getting Stabbed away from home, you know?

  • It is quite good but remember to get drunk before hand

the pints taste like shite inside. The venue is so outdated it is class but the springy floor is great for a loud band. It is at the danger end of Arglye St but walking back into the proper centre for a gig is only 10 minutes and everyone else will be walk that way too. It is a bit dodgy but the number of people leaving kinda ruins there being any real chance of any problems.

I liked it a lot until I went back recently and realise it is pretty shit inside. Though I have yet to go to a bad gig there.

  • try a 'private hire' taxi number

its not dangerous at night. its a bit rough tho. you'll be ok as long as you know where your going. the city centre is only about ten minutes walk.

  • I wouldn't worry...

The area itself isn't too pretty (just like the Barrowlands itself) but I've never seen any bother. Certainly I've never had any trouble going to all the gigs I've went to there.

More to the point has anybody actually received their MBV Glasgow tickets yet? I haven't...

    • Nah,

still not got em. will give it another week or so i think.

  • This is what James Murphy of LCD say about it

    >> Favorite Music Venue

    Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow, Scotland
It fits about 2,000 people, but it's completely square and the audience there is so amazing. The only thing I can compare it to, if you played a big festival or you played a huge arena rock show, and you're a band who's just getting to be that size, so the audience is still really down, and there's about 2,000 people in this square right in front of the stage losing their marbles, it's basically like the pit of a big show, and if you just got rid of everybody else, that's the Glasgow Barrowland. Literally, from the front to the back it's people totally paying attention. It's a suspended floor, so when people jump up and down it bounces, it gives, it's like a big roller rink. It's amazing, and Glasgow's the best place on the planet to play a rock show, period.

    • So

Enjoy your gig it is a great place.

      • cheers everyone

        seriously.

*if i havent posted a thread about how awesome/terrible they were by the following day you will know i have probably become the latest victim of yob-culture.

    • I love this description

and like to think that the two times they have played there I was was there... and it was truly amazing.

  • Tis a great place

Just walk straight back to the city afterwards.. its actually only about 1 minute from the merchant city and a few minutes from one of my favourite pubs Mono..

For a pre gig beer I would suggest McChuils (or however the fuck you spell it) nearby but safe do not go anyplace next to the Barra's if you can avoid it.

In saying that there are even a few trendy places at the trongate now & some expensive flats nearby ..

Great place for a show... from the woman in the cloak room who cannae talk to the sea of plastic bottles across the floor at the end its something else...

    • That woman is great

She seems to have a hole in her throat or something.

I love the Barrowlands, it's just got something sort of magical about it. As stated above though, the pints are utter shite.

      • Yeah the pints are pretty shit

Used to go there and drink diesel which always seemed ok... (wonder why?)

As for the woman been going to gigs there for 20+ years and she has always looked and sounded (or not sounded!) the same...

I think she is some sort of cloakwoman robot..

  • Be prepared for

    terrible sound
    terrible flooring
    terrible organisation

    Wahey for the barras!

    • ^ignore

it's always a happy place and you get a perfect view/sound from nearly every position

I've seen so many amazing bands there that it will always hold a special place in my heart and shall be there for MBV as well. And yes the pint smell funny so get some cider x

  • Barrowlands is the greatest venue I have ever been to!!!!

And I have been to fucking wads of different venues over the years.
I have never seen any trouble there or outside.
Haven't been to the barrowlands in a while and I cannot wait to get back for a gig.

    • /\ Absolutley

      Agree, I love the Barras.

  • favourite venue (also the favourite of Mike Skinner & James Murphy).

It's really not too dodgy at night when there's a gig on. Any further East is getting pretty rancid though.
That said, i certainly wouldn't be drinking in any of the pubs up there.

Still: the suspension-floor is awesome, the sound is usually pretty decent and the crowds tend to be really friendly and great fun.

I also don't get why "the pints are sho shite there" - it's Miller on tap which, whilst not exactly a home-brew, is palatable.

    • they smell and taste

      funny, but not haha funny.

Lets do a Barras Miller challenge ala those Pepsi challenges! Wait, i'm in work, maybe another time.

And in regards to pubs in the area - there's a few pretentious wanker pubs around Merchant City where you won't get any hassle that I'd recommend. Or just goto somewhere decent like Sleazys then pay the £3 for a taxi down.

      • ^ Merchant City's fine, sure,

but past Glasgow Cross i wouldn't think it wise to be investigating some of the public houses...

        • true

they're all dodgy scum bags, but it might add to the fun of the night, bit of variety 'n all that.

On a similar note - does anyone know if there's a support for the two MBV gigs?

          • you and you bragging types with tickets for it

        • there is the awesome West

Just at the top of Glasgow Green n the old carpet factory, which is a German brewery/pub that brews its own beer and does brilliant food. Is about five mins walk from the Barras.

And yep, been to many many gigs there and never seen any problems. You'll be fine if you're in the with the crowd.

          • ^ THISTHISTHISTHISTHIS.

            Go there.

          • Is the west Place

Not Shut? if its still open it is very good - top nosh and top beer

      • U suggest a pint in Sleazys

and give the barra's a hard time?? sleazys is the worst beer in the western hemisphere.

rubbish beer and gig venue seems to go hand in hand.

        • Sleazy's is great for gigs

          • Great for gigs

Aye, but I was in there last night and the pints were pish. Still, an improvement on The Halt, where we started out, who had no draught beers at all due to some kind of fault.

I still maintain that the best pint I've had in Glasgow comes from The Grand Ole Opry on Paisley Road :)

  • I've playeeed there

    and it's massive and wicked.

There's also 3 St Johns Ambulancers with plastic buckets and a queue of vomiters, like like a vomitorium by t6he side of the stage.

    It has a bouncing dancefloor.

The area is a shuh-huh-huh-uhhhhhhhhhhhHIT HOLE

    • It's not THAT bad in comparison with areas in the general Eastern vicinity

    • Ehhhhhh

St. Andrews ambulance thankyaverymuch! We urr an independent peeeppull and aw that.

  • well

I saw Explosions in the Sky there back in january and it was without a doubt one of the best gigs I've ever been to, so MBV really should excel.

I found its a really big venue but it still feels intimate and its pretty easy to get to the front; just be weary of more casual gig goers who may talk alot throughout (ike every venue in london ever)

    • I'm going

too, btw, and am very excited. then seeing my old band maths at 13th note, should be a top weekend innit

    • you thought EITS was one of the best gigs?

I'm not saying you're wrong, as it's subjective and all, but what did you like about it so much?

I left early, i thought it was the proverbial shite.

      • I was

more or less right at the front and they played a near-perfect set (was only missing 'Yasmin the Light').

Also it was tenfold better than when I saw them at the London Koko the year before.

that and, you know, they;re one of my favourite bands anyway

  • The Barrowland is great.

The sound is good but the pints are shite. I suggest you stick the the cans of Miller than are usually on sale, they don't taste like a sweaty brown star like the stuff on tap...

It's pretty safe. There's so many people about before and after a gig that you can walk around there safely and not worry. You are only 5-10 minutes from Queen Street Station and only a few minutes from the Merchant City.

Don't be feared, you'll be absolutely fine.

One word of advice though: be prepared to have beer spilled all over you. The Barrowland seems to be littered with folk who like to throw cups of beer on the folk in front.

    • ^^ im not as bothered about the beer throwing

i've had suspicious cups of things land on me @ Leeds Festival the last three years

      • much love for the Barras

It's a shame it's been kind of put in the background for that size of gig by the ABC and Academy which both are ok but have nowhere near as much character.

just make sure you turn left when you come out the door, keep walking straight along and you'll end up in the city centre perfectly safe.

        • ABC is a vile hole and Academy is just a soulless identikit venue.

          Barras FTW!!

          • yup.

I've only been in the ABC once, and it just didn't work for me.

The Academy's rubbish - nae soul, rotten rotten pints, and utter pish on the sound front. Not to mention one of the fuds at the door confiscating a packet of polos off me.

The Barras is a great venue. As everyone's mentioned, it's in a moderately rough area, but it's certainly not one of the worst and the likelihood of running into any danger is pretty damn low.

Grab some beers in the 13th Note beforehand, and take a wander along the road, it's about 5 minutes walk.

            • ABC is ok

And a huge improvement on the Garage back in days when it used to do gigs.

The problem in the Carling is the 17 or so bars.. there is a constant stream of people moving about in a sold out show thats unbearable... and the Carling really is in a dodgy area of town!!

I like Oran Mor and Stereo these days both have good sound and about the right number of people.

          • Word to this

            • Barras: Best Venue in the UK

Period. Although given i've never been to a gig south of Nottingham, that isn't a particularly scientific assessment.
