you were supposed to be able to take it down the arcades and upload your characters to their Naomi systems. Absolutely rubbish. The Dreamcast controllers were quite good though, the analogue shoulder buttons were really useful for racing games.
it would be the current 360 controller for pure function. All Sony's pads - up to and including the current one - retain their FAIL value due to the rubbish deadzone in the middle of the sticks. Which they STILL refuse to fix after all this time, and make playing first person games a (comparative) bleedin' chore.
There's something weirdly loveable about the Gamcube controller too. So snug; and those ace shoulder buttons.
Retro value: the 6 button Megadrive pads. For SFII:CE, obv.
Retro comedy value: those amiga and ST ones that had a smooth disc where the pad should be. They didn't work, but every fucker bought them.
really, really good; but the d-pad was too small and spongey. I had a second party pad which mimicked the design but was abit more chunky, and it was absolutely magic.
altho only a bit. my boyf is very into them and frequently gives me hour long lectures on the virtues of one d-pad over another. great stuff.
n64 for me, but i love most nintendo controllers. anything else usually makes me feel queasy, esp some of the 3rd party gamecube ones out there that literally make me feel vomity.
It's a good size and weight, plus the sticks are perfect for controlling a character in an FPS (invert y axis FTW!). The d-pad is pretty shit though, luckily you rarely have to use it.
Acctualy I like the SNES and Playstaion bestist but I havent played on the new lot of consoles like xbox and all them lot.... oh yeah 3DO was a joke a shit shit joke.
it's the only controller I feel genuinely comfortable handling, it's just big and reassuring feeling, everything was in the right place on it, although it could have been a tiny, tiny bit smaller maybe. Apart from that though it's fuckng ace.
There is a sixaxis
In my lap.
Right now.
Mmmmmmmmm.
The six axis controler is crap!
i'll six YOUR axis
you'll what me?
Hi!
atari jaguar
lulz
with the massive telephone bit in the middle you were supposed to slide a card over - worst controller EVER.
amazing
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7e/Jaguar_Controller.jpg
i love early 90s design aesthetics. CHUNKY PLASTIC FTW.
I do like the colours of that grey/blue one though
does anyone remember the dreamcast one with that mini tamagotchi memory card thing you put in the mi
Oh yeah
you were supposed to be able to take it down the arcades and upload your characters to their Naomi systems. Absolutely rubbish. The Dreamcast controllers were quite good though, the analogue shoulder buttons were really useful for racing games.
basic playstation.
no other controller fits so well in your hand without cramping *I'M LOOKING AT YOU N64 CONTROLLER*
:(
its ace though
you couldnt imagimne playing zedla OOT on a playstation pad could you?!
But the joystick always wore out
and it was a nightmare for multiplayer Goldeneye if you got the shitty pad
LOL thew token slightly less popular one in the group always got the shitty pad :D
harsh
social rankinz suck
If they sorted out the dpad

^ agreed 360 pad is the best
wireless nom nom nom
as you say
N64 pad ftw.
Although Wii Remote + Nunchuck is pretty sweet.
N64 for Goldeneye
sixaxis for pro evo
^ ignore that*
that's a really dumb thing to say
SNES
^ This isn't a joke
Stop ignoring me. It was REVOLUTIONARY and all pads since OWE IT EVERYTHING.
no one said it was a joke :)
good choice sir
it was
really, really good; but the d-pad was too small and spongey. I had a second party pad which mimicked the design but was abit more chunky, and it was absolutely magic.
I used to think the PS2/3
But the 360 wins in my opinion. Not the old X-Box one though, that was hideous.
the tank one?
Cor, yeah, that great big bloody huge thing.
It was the whole reason i didn't want to bother with an x-box to begin with.
The S controller was superior to PS2 controller
the original XBOX one though, that was a corker
my friend swore by his original
cottage sized xbox controller. He called it 'the loaf'
I bloody loved the Controller S
obviously, I guess, since it pretty much informed the design of the 360 pad.
I dunno, there was something satisfying about the moose-sized one too; the super-powerful rumble maybe?
Zipstick
where are your threads?
xbox 360.
Although I do have a soft spot for the N64 pad. "One joystick?? Yellow 'c' buttons for strafing! MADNESS!"
:D mad wasnt it!
It's the first controller I used
to play shoot em ups properly on so it will always have a place in my heart.
Oh hells
you're a shmups man? Are you into full-on bullet hell shit? As a man who can't get past the first level of Ikaruga, ou're having my respect if so.
i like shmups toooo
altho only a bit. my boyf is very into them and frequently gives me hour long lectures on the virtues of one d-pad over another. great stuff.
n64 for me, but i love most nintendo controllers. anything else usually makes me feel queasy, esp some of the 3rd party gamecube ones out there that literally make me feel vomity.
Mircosoft sidewinder joystick
gamecube controller coming in second, but dualshock for football games.
The best controller I have used is the current X360
It's a good size and weight, plus the sticks are perfect for controlling a character in an FPS (invert y axis FTW!). The d-pad is pretty shit though, luckily you rarely have to use it.
Street Fighter 4 is
probably going to cost me over £100, because there's no way I'm playing that with the 360's pad. Why couldn't they get that bit right too?
PS2
Not even any contest. All the buttons are accessible without moving your hand. The N64 one was fucking awful. It had three handles.
I tell you what else was EVIL. Megadrive. GOD. WHAT THE FUCK. Horrible.
PS2.
I like the PS2 controller
Really I do. The d-pad is basically perfect. But the sticks are, unfortunately, just not good at all.
it's not like yr sposed to use all 3 at the same time!
the ps2 stick is shit and really hard to get to!
Gamecube i reckon
a tiny bit fussy at times (d-pad, z button?) but the build quality and stick were THE BEST.
rubbish shoulder buttons though..
megadrive
the must have been made of the most indestructable material know to man, the amount of times I threw the against the wall or bit them in frustration
360.
3DO
http://www.gooddealgames.com/articles/Game%20Consoles/52%20Panasonic%203DO%20FZ10.jpg
Acctualy I like the SNES and Playstaion bestist but I havent played on the new lot of consoles like xbox and all them lot.... oh yeah 3DO was a joke a shit shit joke.
I've got a theory on this.
Every new feature in gaming controllers was pioneered by Nintendo.
Shoulder buttons - SNES
Anolouge stick - N64
Wirelessness - Wii
Everyone follows Nintendo.
Beside ergonomic ingenuity, perhaps.
not a theory...a fact!
don't forget the D pad..
True
but as JayPe kinda suggested, it's often others that develop and refine them into their best forms.
the basic playstation one was perfect
before they added those thumbsticks and a rumblepack.
It was a perfect fit for hands and intuitive to play with.
Gamecube ftw
Fit like an extension of the hand, was basically the PS2 controller with all the problems sorted.
The original Xbox controller,
it's the only controller I feel genuinely comfortable handling, it's just big and reassuring feeling, everything was in the right place on it, although it could have been a tiny, tiny bit smaller maybe. Apart from that though it's fuckng ace.
